Good News For Roger Federer Fans! 20-Time Major Champion To Make Tennis Comeback
In what comes as great news for tennis fans, Swiss star Roger Federer is all set to make a grand comeback to the sport at the Shanghai Masters in October, three years after announcing retirement from professional tennis, at the Laver Cup in 2022.
On Sunday, August 10, Federer revealed that he will play in the 'Roger & Friend' celebrity doubles event on October 10 at Qizhong Stadium.
The exhibition match promises an exciting mix of participants, featuring young Chinese actor Wu Lei, veteran Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen and former Chinese tennis star Zheng Jie, 2008 Olympics women's doubles bronze medallist.
'Hello, this is Roger, and I am thrilled to be returning to Qizhong Stadium in Shanghai for the Rolex Shanghai Masters," Federer said in a promotional video.
'Shanghai has always been a special place for me, with great fans, unforgettable memories, and a real love for the game," Federer said.
Federer went on to compete in the Shanghai Masters eight times, winning the title twice. His first win came 11 years ago, when he beat Novak Djokovic in the last four and Gilles Simon in the final consecutively to lift the trophy.
Two years back, Federer was honoured with the Icon Athlete Award by the Shanghai Masters, celebrating his influence on the event, the city and tennis.
Fitness issues marred Federer's final playing years, but he managed to bow out on his terms almost three years ago at the Laver Cup, the competition he helped establish.
Federer will have company in the exhibition match in the form of high-profile celebrities, bringing the glitz and cross-cultural flavour.

Mohammad Rizwan In Disbelief After Getting Out For Golden Duck
Rizwan came out to bat at No. 4 for Pakistan in the 295-run chase on Tuesday but got out on the first ball. Mohammad Rizwan came out to bat at No. 4 for Pakistan on Tuesday (August 12) against the West Indies in the third and final ODI of the ongoing three-match series, but he failed to open his account even in the series decider and got out for a first-ball duck. The captain of Pakistan's ODI side was clean bowled by fast bowler Jayden Seales, who then also picked up Babar Azam's wicket. The former Pakistani all-format captain could only manage to score nine runs from 23 balls. He was trapped in front of the wickets by Seales on the second ball of the ninth over of the run chase. Pakistani fans and team management had high expectations from Rizwan in the third ODI after the hosts rode on captain Shai Hope's unbeaten 120-run knock to post a total of 294 runs on the board for the loss of six wickets in 50 overs. But unlike Hope, Rizwan couldn't do anything in the match where his side needed him the most. The clip of his stunned reaction after getting clean bowled by Seales was shared by fans on X, and within no time it went viral on the internet. Hope equals Lara's record Hope entered his name in the history books by equalling Brian Lara's record of most centuries in ODIs as captain of the West Indies. Hope, who is leading the West Indies in the third ODI against Pakistan, completed his 18th ODI century in 83 balls. He has scored five centuries in the 50-over format of the game as the skipper of the two-time ODI World Cup winners. During his 17-year-long ODI career, Lara played 125 ODIs as captain of the West Indies and scored five centuries, whereas Hope has scored five centuries in just 38 matches as captain. The overall record of scoring the most ODI centuries as captain is in the name of Ricky Ponting. Ponting played 230 ODIs as captain of the Australian team and scored 22 centuries. view comments First Published: August 13, 2025, 00:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
