By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: Chia said that in order to make Tawau a city that visitors would want to stay in and explore, he believes a comprehensive effort is needed to improve its tourism capacity and overall image. TAWAU: Tawau should not remain merely a 'transit hub' for local and international tourists. Instead, it needs to be developed into another attractive destination in Sabah. Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce (CCCT) President Chia Siong Fatt said Tawau actually has a lot to offer, with its natural beauty and unique culture for people to enjoy. Among them are tropical rainforest national parks, world-class fruit plantation, a multicultural heritage, affordable fresh seafood, historic old alleyways, and its reputation as a key centre for Malaysia's cocoa and chocolate production. However, he said all these resources had yet to be successfully integrated into a well-organised and appealing tourism product. As a result, tourists arriving at Tawau Airport (LTT) tend to head straight to Semporna, which is more internationally recognised. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article.

Loke praises AirAsia crew after adverse weather turns 50-minute flight into 4 hours
Published on: Sunday, June 08, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 08, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Pics via Anthony Loke Siew Fook | Facebook KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Anthony Loke shared his recent experience of a delayed flight from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur that was diverted to Penang due to adverse weather, turning a 50-minute journey into nearly four hours. In a Facebook post, Loke commended the professionalism and dedication of the flight crew throughout the incident. Advertisement He said he had boarded AirAsia flight AK6047 at Senai International Airport at 10.45 pm last night after attending a DAP Johor fundraiser dinner in Johor Bahru. The flight proceeded normally until the descent phase, when the aircraft encountered heavy clouds and thunderstorms. However, as it approached the runway, strong crosswinds and gusty storms forced the pilot to abort landing and circle the airspace around Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). 'What was supposed to be a 50-minute flight took almost four hours! Unexpected weather is one of the biggest challenges in airline operations. I was later informed that at least five AirAsia flights were diverted, and probably many other flights too. 'Captain Teng Huah Jer later made the decision to divert the flight to Penang for refuelling before the weather improved for a safe landing in KLIA,' he said. Advertisement Loke praised the pilot's calm and clear communication, noting that regular updates played a crucial role in keeping passengers informed and calm. 'I also wish to commend the entire crew for tirelessly supporting passengers in need. Throughout the entire episode, the crew remained composed, compassionate and professional, assisting passengers with care and empathy,' he said. Despite the extended hours, the crew maintained their professionalism and even apologised personally to every passenger for the inconvenience, he added. Loke also thanked Captain Jer, First Officer Bryan Alexander Yin Kian Yam, senior cabin crew Muhammad Asyraf Muhammad Nasrullah and cabin crew members Mandasari Nikita Florensia, Bagus Setyadi Nugroho and Norjuniza Muhammad for their efforts. He also acknowledged the ground handlers, air traffic controllers and support teams at Senai, Penang and KLIA for their swift and coordinated responses that ensured the safe completion of the journey. 'We landed safely at KLIA at 2.40 am, almost four hours after the plane took off from Senai! As a sign of moral support and appreciation to the crew, I waited for all passengers to disembark before leaving the aircraft,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Nearly RM800m allocated for water supply projects to address monsoon impact
Published on: Sunday, June 08, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 08, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. KUCHING: The Federal Government has allocated RM796.4 million in loans to state governments this year to finance various water supply projects. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the projects are among the government's initiatives to mitigate the impact of the Southwest Monsoon, which is expected to bring dry weather and potential drought. Advertisement Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said as of May this year, 28 projects under this initiative are currently underway. Of the total, 12 are in Sabah, two in Kedah and Perlis, one in Kelantan, three in Pahang and Terengganu and five in Sarawak. 'These projects are at various stages of completion. Some are under implementation and seven are expected to be completed this year,' he told reporters after attending the Aidiladha qurban (sacrificial ritual) programme at Kampung Tupong Jaya, here today. At the same time, Fadillah said his ministry is now focusing on resolving the issue of non-revenue water (NRW). Advertisement He said NRW is caused by various factors, including system inefficiencies, pipe leakages and water theft. 'When pipe connections are poorly installed, leakages happen. There are also old pipes that have started leaking. Overall, we estimate that the country loses 40 per cent of its treated water. This incurs high costs. 'Therefore, our current priority is to identify methods to reassess the piping systems and replace damaged pipes,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: The reopening of the long-delayed Taman Tun Fuad in Bukit Padang has been postponed once again, drawing criticism from City Hall (DBKK) advisor Datuk Philip Yong, who described the lack of progress in upgrading works as 'deeply disappointing'. The RM20 million project, fully funded by the federal Pakatan Harapan government, has kept the popular recreational park closed since Dec 10, 2022. Advertisement Initially scheduled for completion by Sept 18, 2024, the reopening date has now been pushed to July 14, 2025, marking the third delay. 'Taman Tun Fuad is a vital public space for daily exercise and recreation, used by over a thousand people every day,' said Yong, a former Member of Parliament for Kota Kinabalu (Gaya), in a statement, Saturday.
