EC to provide mobile phone deposit facility for voters at polling stations
In another move, seeking to rationalise poll day management, the Election Commission (EC) decided to allow parties and candidates to set up booths to distribute unofficial

Till now, the limit was 200 metres from the "polling location".

These two key reforms will first be implemented in Bihar, where assembly polls will be held later this year.
Recognising the increasing coverage and usage of mobile phones in urban and rural areas and the challenges faced not only by the voters at large but also senior citizens, women and persons with disabilities in managing mobile phones on polling day, the commission has decided to allow a mobile deposit facility just outside the polling stations, the EC said.
Live Events
"Only mobile phones shall be allowed within 100 metres of the polling station and that too in switched-off mode. Very simple pigeonhole boxes or jute bags shall be provided near the entrance door of the polling station where the voters would be required to deposit their mobile phones. Mobile phones shall not be allowed to be carried inside the polling station," the poll authority said.
However, it said, certain polling stations could be exempt from this provision based on adverse local circumstances by the returning officer.
Rule 49M of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, which ensures secrecy of voting within the polling station, will continue to be strictly enforced, it underlined.
The EC said that in a move aimed at improving election day facilitation, it rationalised the permissible norms for canvassing in line with the electoral laws to 100 metres from the entrance of the polling station.
However, electioneering will not be allowed within a 100-metre radius around the polling station on the day of polling.
"Therefore, the booths set up by the candidates on poll day for issuing unofficial identity slips to electors, in case the electors are not carrying their official Voter Information Slips (VIS) issued by the commission, can now be set up just beyond 100 metres of any polling station," it said.
One "polling location", such as a school, can have multiple polling stations.

Motha MLA seeks details of STF for identification of illegal migrants
Agartala: Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has formally requested chief minister Manik Saha to clarify details about the newly formed Special Task Force (STF) aimed at identifying illegal migrants. This comes after the CM announced the state's intention to proceed with the identification process, using Dec 31, 2014, as the cut-off date. Debbarma's letter raises concerns about the transparency and structure of the STF, which has been tasked with curbing infiltration in the state. Despite the public announcement of the STF's formation, Debbarma notes that the official notification only lists a few police officers' names under the West Tripura unit, without detailing the force's structure, composition, or operational procedures. Highlighting public unease, Debbarma urged the CM to provide a written clarification to address the confusion surrounding the STF's mandate. He questioned the location of the STF headquarters in West Tripura and sought details on the number of members deployed. The MLA also inquired whether central paramilitary forces like BSF and Assam Rifles are part of the task force, as per MHA directives. Additionally, he asked if civil administration officials are included in the STF and requested information on logistical support. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search Ads Search Now Undo He expressed concern about the readiness of detention camps to handle detection, detention, and deportation tasks. In addition to manual boats, drones also to be deployed to protect Goa's fish stock: Halarnkar
Porvorim: The fisheries department successfully tested drone technology over two months to monitor bull trawling in the state's waters, fisheries minister Nilkanth Halarnkar told the assembly on Wednesday. A special control room for monitoring has been set up at the fisheries department, and now drones will be used to identify vessels that enter Goa's waters to deplete its fish stock, he said. Chief minister Pramod Sawant said that the drones are being used to identify violations, in addition to the two existing manual boats used by the state. 'We have started taking action against bull trawling. So far, 17-18 boats were seized, and the labourers and others caught are kept in a lock-up for two days as a deterrent,' he said. Halarnkar said such drones are already used effectively by Maharashtra govt. 'The drone capacity is up to 20km, and it gives a clear picture even at night. We have two boats already, and additional force will be provided once we start the drone system full-fledged. The high court has already said that we can act against such bull trawling up to 12km. When violations are caught, we auction the fish stock, and they are fined five times this price,' he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You Won't Believe the Price of These Dubai Apartments Binghatti Developers FZE Get Offer Undo Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginald Lourenco said, 'You will watch the boat from the drone, but how will you attach the boat? NGT directs Gujarat CS to submit detailed progress report on waste management
Ahmedabad: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed Gujarat's chief secretary to submit an affidavit detailing the status of waste generation, collection, disposal, and processing for each urban local body (ULB) in the state. The Gujarat govt was expected to submit a six-monthly report on solid and liquid waste management to the NGT by July 22, in accordance with a previous order issued by the tribunal, following directions from the Supreme Court. During a hearing on Tuesday, the tribunal noted that the Gujarat govt failed to file the required report. It observed that "the chief secretary, state of Gujarat has not made any request for seeking further time disclosing any cogent reason." The state's counsel requested a four-week extension to file the progress report, which the tribunal granted. However, the NGT emphasized that the chief secretary must submit the report in the format prescribed in its earlier order. "Let the progress report be filed by the chief secretary, state of Gujarat in the form of an affidavit, enclosing therewith the status of compliance of solid and liquid waste management (ULB-wise) in the state," the tribunal stated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad The prescribed format requires the report to include detailed information on solid waste management — including the quantity of waste generated by each municipality and municipal corporation, the amount collected, its destination, and the methods of processing such as composting, RDF (refuse derived fuel), and energy generation.
