Ma Care: Kudumbashree's taste now in state schools

Time of India30-06-2025
T'puram: The "Ma Care" project by Kudumbashree is being introduced in various schools under the state's education department. As part of this initiative, kiosks will be set up within school premises to provide students with healthy and nutritious snacks, beverages, school stationery items and sanitary napkins.
If space is unavailable for kiosks, unused classrooms will be utilized for this purpose. Students, teachers and others can purchase food, drinks and other items at reasonable prices from these kiosks. The goal is to launch the project in at least a thousand high schools and higher secondary schools by July.
Before the project launch, special meetings will be held under the leadership of district panchayat presidents, involving the respective panchayat presidents, school authorities and CDS chairpersons.
Instructions have been given to Kudumbashree district mission coordinators to prepare for setting up kiosks in schools.
The "Ma Care" kiosk project aims to provide income to Kudumbashree women while strengthening the livelihood sector. It is expected that at least 5,000 women will find better livelihood opportunities through the project's initial phase. The project, which has already started in Kasaragod and Kannur districts, has received a positive response.
By providing snacks, beverages and necessary stationery, the initiative aims to prevent students from leaving school premises during school hours.
Additionally, having access to healthy snacks and drinks within the school compound can help prevent unhealthy food consumption and substance abuse outside schools.
Efforts are underway to identify entrepreneurs interested in running kiosks with the support of CDS. Selected individuals will receive training from Kudumbashree on operating kiosks as a business model. Financial assistance for starting the enterprise will be provided through various Kudumbashree projects, the Community Enterprise Fund, linkage loans and the scheme allocation of the three-tier panchayats.

‘Maa Care Stores' to offer healthy snacks in schools in Kerala

KOCHI: Nutritious snacks, drinks, stationery, and sanitary napkins – all within easy reach of schoolchildren – are now a reality with the Kudumbashree's 'Maa Care Store' project, which is being rolled out across schools in the state. First launched in Kasaragod and Kannur, the initiative was implemented in Ernakulam district, with its constituency-level inauguration held at the Kuttampuzha Government Higher Secondary School in Kothamangalam on Wednesday. The event was inaugurated by MLA Antony John. The 'Maa Care' stores, set up within school premises, are aimed at helping children access healthy food and essential items without having to step out of campus. The project is being implemented in collaboration with the general education department. Apart from improving student welfare, it also opens up livelihood opportunities for Kudumbashree members, who run and manage the kiosks. The initiative is designed to reduce the chances of students interacting with strangers or consuming unhealthy snacks and substances from outside. With positive feedback from Kasaragod and Kannur, the project is now being extended to schools in districts like Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Malappuram. The kiosks are either set up in school compounds or inside unused classrooms. Both students and teachers can buy items from these kiosks at affordable prices. Women from neighbourhood groups have been trained to run the kiosks. They can also avail themselves of financial help through Kudumbashree schemes like the community enterprise fund, linkage loans, and panchayat project funds.

Symptoms, health risks: All you need to know about Nimbus, most common Covid variant in US

Officially known as NB.1.8.1 and nicknamed 'Nimbus', a new Covid-19 variant is now the dominant one in the United States. Detected in several US states back in June, the strain is now the most common in the country, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDS is monitoring the spread of his virus through an airport screening program(REUTERS/Representational) The CDS is monitoring the spread of his virus through an airport screening program, wherein nasal and wastewater samples are being collected. From symptoms and spread to the health risks, here's all you need to know about the new variant: The 'Nimbus' variant was first detected in March by the CDC's airport testing program, and is a subvariant of Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2. It emerged in China earlier in 2025, and later spread to parts of Asia and Europe, a Bloomberg report said. Some people who have been diagnosed with the 'Nimbus' variant reported intense scratchiness like 'razor blades in the throat". Other symptoms linked to the variant are common -- congestion, fatigue, mild cough, fever, loss of taste and smell, runny nose, loss of appetite and muscle aches. The variant makes up between 13-68 per cent of circulating Covid strains, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services. A two-week period ending June 21 showed 43 per cent of Covid cases being that of the Nimbus variant. However, Rajendram Rajnarayanan, a researcher at New York Institute of Technology, believes that the estimates of the Nimbus variant cases are unreliable "due to limited surveillance". While the CDS says it is 'aware of increasing detections' of Nimbus, the World Health Organisation had earlier said that the public health risk the variant poses is not higher than others. Cases of Nimbus variant were earlier detected in US states like Washington, New York, California and Virginia, and in other countries, like Australia and the UK.
