Clayton Keller shines as Team USA reaches gold medal final after huge win at World Championships
Stockholm fans heard Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" repeatedly on Thursday, but it was Team USA who stole the spotlight at Avicii Arena. With a convincing 6–2 victory over Sweden, the Americans punched their ticket to the gold medal game at the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship.
Four of the NHL's newest franchise, the Utah Mammoths, players were big contributors to the big win.

From the opening puck drop, the United States dominated the game. Having won a tight one against Finland in the quarterfinals, Team USA seemed quicker, more crisp, and more powerful against the host country. They took an early 4–0 lead in two periods and fended off Sweden's third-period push with two additional goals to seal the 6–2 victory.
Logan Cooley kept on impressing. Utah Mammoth sensation now boasts 11 points in nine games, four of them goals and seven assists, second-most on Team USA. His Utah Mammoth teammate Clayton Keller is closely behind him with 10 points (three goals, seven assists).
'I liked our start. We were simple. We knew how we had to start the game and how we had to play. So, I thought everyone chipped in and made an impact on the game today.

We stuck to our game plan," Clayton Keller said after the victory.
Michael Kesselring, Utah Mammoth defenseman and another key player contributed four points throughout the tournament. Forward Josh Doan contributed a single point. These impressive performances indicate just how much Utah's younger talent is contributing to the U.S. on the world stage.

Gold medal game up next and put all eyes on Utah's draft
Team USA will now face the winner of Switzerland vs.
Denmark in Sunday's gold medal game. The last time the U.S. won gold at the Men's World Championship was in 1933 nearly 100 years ago. A win this weekend would be historic.
It's a good feeling. There's one more game to win. We're going to focus on tomorrow,' Keller said.
When the tournament is over, eyes will shift back to Utah Mammoth's next big time June 27–28's 2025 NHL Draft. Utah gets fourth overall and their newest draft pick will be the first in franchise history to lace up the Mammoth home sweater on stage.
In the meantime, Utah fans will be cheering loudly this Sunday, praying their players take home gold.

US senator calls for antitrust scrutiny of Dick's bid for Foot Locker
Following Dick's Sporting Goods' (Dick's) renewing its attempt to buy Foot Locker, US senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) wrote to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice's (DOJ) antitrust division, sounding the alarm about the deal's potential to create a sporting goods giant, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers and urging the regulators to block the deal if they find it violates antitrust laws. 'The combination of Dick's Sporting Goods and Foot Locker would decrease competition in the retail athletic footwear markets, cut jobs, raise prices, and leave Americans to foot the bill. This is particularly concerning given that more than half of parents 'plan to sacrifice necessities, such as groceries', because of rising prices for back-to-school shopping, including sneakers,' said Warren. US senator Elizabeth Warren urged the FTC and DOJ to scrutinise and potentially block Dick's $2.4 billion bid to acquire Foot Locker, warning it could reduce competition, raise pricesâ€'especially for struggling familiesâ€'and lead to job losses and harm to small businesses. She cited rising back-to-school costs, potential store closures, and increased market dominance as concerns. In May 2025, Dick's Sporting Goods announced its intention to acquire Foot Locker for $2.4 billion, which would combine the US' largest sporting goods retailer with one of the largest athletic shoe retailers in the country. The new giant would allow Dick's to control more than 15 per cent of the US sporting goods market and could create a duopoly with the current largest athletic footwear retailer, JD Sports. 'The size of the deal and each company's significant presence in the athletic footwear market suggests this deal merits significant scrutiny from antitrust agencies…If competitors Dick's and Foot Locker combined, the resulting elimination of competition could lead to higher prices for consumers and other negative effects… Higher prices on athletic footwear could lead to further economic hardship for parents,' added Warren. Families are already struggling amid rising prices for clothes and shoes: 39 per cent of parents say 'they can't afford back-to-school shopping this year', and 44 per cent 'plan to take on debt to cover the cost of school supplies'. The deal also poses a threat to workers. Due to the overlap in Dick's and Foot Locker stores, Foot Locker has already announced that some stores would likely close as a result of the acquisition. The resulting job losses could put additional strain on local communities, which are already facing historic rates of retail store closures, the company said in a press release. The proposed deal could also hurt small businesses. The new company would have significantly increased power to extract favourable conditions with manufacturers, putting independent retailers at a disadvantage and giving Dick's and Foot Locker an incentive to engage in anticompetitive conduct to restrict suppliers from dealing with independent retailers. Warren highlighted the benefit of preserving competition as exemplified by a federal judge's blocking Kroger and Albertsons' proposed merger and recent comments by the new CEO of Albertsons, who said the company now planned to improve to keep prices low to attract more shoppers' in order to compete with rival companies. 'This is a striking example of the benefits of competition for consumers, and should give antitrust agencies the confidence to continue vigorously enforcing antitrust law,' said Warren. This megadeal also comes as consumers face increased athletic shoe costs from President Trump's chaotic tariff policy. As a result of the administration's erratic trade policy—and the uncertainty it has created—economists project that shoe prices are slated to rise by 44 per cent. 'This deal could raise prices for families already facing higher sneaker costs from President Trump's tariffs and threaten workers and small businesses. The FTC and DOJ should carefully scrutinise this merger and block it if it illegally harms competition in violation of federal law,' concluded Warren. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (RR)

ESPN-NFL deal faces regulatory hurdles
The National Football League's deal with Walt Disney in which it will gain an equity stake in ESPN in return for prime media assets is expected to face scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice, according to legal experts and industry sources. The agreement, announced late Tuesday, involves Disney's ESPN acquiring the NFL Network and other media properties in exchange for the league receiving a 10 percent stake in the sports network. Andre P. Barlow, a partner at Doyle, Barlow & Mazard, said the transaction "surely raises competition concerns," because it could potentially give Disney greater control over televised sports carriage and reduce competition. "The deal could potentially result in higher costs for consumers, as Disney's dominance in sports media could limit options and drive up prices for streaming services or game access," Barlow said. The Justice Department is expected to conduct a substantive review of the new ESPN-NFL transaction, according to one source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Another source said obtaining U.S. antitrust clearance could take up to 12 months. ESPN and the NFL declined comment. The expected review comes as the Justice Department's Antitrust Division is examining a separate deal Disney reached earlier this year to acquire a controlling stake in the sports streaming service Fubo TV. The division demanded further information from the companies in March to examine whether the deal would unduly concentrate the market for sports streaming. Meanwhile, the issue of rising costs for fans as games migrate to streaming services has reached the Senate, where the Commerce Committee held a hearing in May. "In an era of deep partisan division, sports might be the most powerful cultural unifier we have," said Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who chairs the committee, noting it brings together Americans whether they're watching from their couches or in the stands. "But those millions of fans are asking a simple question: 'Why does it seem to be getting harder -- and more expensive -- to just watch the game?'" John Bergmayer, legal director of the non-profit Public Knowledge, voiced the same concerns. "The proliferation of streaming services -- and the fragmentation of content between them -- means that the costs of watching streaming video are rising, and for many people can approach what they were paying on their cable bill," said Bergmayer in testimony to the committee. "Some viewers feel like they finally broke free of the cable bundle only to watch it re-forming (before) their eyes." ESPN STREAMING SERVICE The NFL has done outreach to 30 congressional offices to discuss the terms of its deal with ESPN and how it would result in greater consumer choice, according to one of the sources. Under the agreement, ESPN would be able to add the NFL Network to its breadth of sports programming and incorporate it as part of its ESPN-branded streaming service. ESPN also plans to merge its fantasy football offering with that of the NFL. ESPN also will be able to distribute the NFL's RedZone to cable and satellite TV distributors, along with its other channels. The NFL will retain streaming rights to NFL RedZone, which is available online through YouTube TV. Disney won swift approval for its $71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets in 2018, during President Donald Trump's first term, though it was required to divest Fox's 22 regional sports networks to address competition concerns. At the time, Trump called to congratulate the Fox's Rupert Murdoch on the deal. "It was worked out in record time," said Barlow, adding that this time around, he expects the Justice Department "to take a close look before approving the deal." One recent media deal, the $8.4 billion merger of Paramount Global and Skydance Media, became bogged down in a lengthy regulatory review, as President Donald Trump sued Paramount, claiming the CBS News program "60 Minutes" deceptively edited an interview with his Democratic rival for the White House, former Vice President Kamala Harris. The Federal Communications Commission approved the transaction within days of Trump receiving a $16 million settlement, though FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the civil suit and regulatory review were unrelated. Politics could complicate the deal. Some sports industry insiders pointed to Trump's threats to interfere with a deal to build a new football stadium in Washington, D.C., unless the local NFL team, now known as the Commanders, changes its name back to Redskins, which was abandoned after decades of criticism that it was a racial slur. ESPN is currently 80 percent owned by ABC Inc as an indirect subsidiary of Disney, with the other 20% owned by Hearst. If the deal is approved, ABC's stake would drop to 72 percent and Hearst would fall to 18 percent to grant the NFL a 10 percent stake.
