Zahid reaffirms govt support for Bumiputera empowerment, follow-up talks with stakeholders set for Friday
KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — The government remains firmly committed to supporting and strengthening policies and initiatives aligned with Bumiputera economic aspirations, to ensure lasting benefits for both current and future generations.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said a follow-up discussion with key stakeholders will be held this Friday to further refine the direction and implementation of the agenda.
'As a nation that upholds balance and stability as foundations of development, efforts to narrow economic disparities between communities must be pursued with strong and coordinated commitment, across ministries, agencies, and the private sector,' he said in a Facebook post today.
Ahmad Zahid, who chaired the 2024 Bumiputera Economic Congress (KEB), said this after reviewing a presentation by Economic Ministry secretary-general Datuk Nor Azmie Diron on the 'One-Year Post-KEB 2024 Retreat' at his office today.
Held from February 29 to March 2 last year, KEB 2024 outlined more than 80 resolutions aimed at enhancing Bumiputera socio-economic empowerment.
These resolutions were the result of engagement sessions conducted through 10 clusters covering various key areas during the three-day congress. — Bernama

PETALING JAYA : Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli has questioned the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and police for taking action against several netizens who had commented on PKR's recently concluded party polls. Rafizi said he received numerous complaints from members of the public, who claimed they were being subject to various actions by the MCMC after posting comments on the PKR elections on social media. He said some of them were told that their content breached the law, while others were approached by MCMC and police officers for a 'meeting'. Some were also formally notified that they were under investigation and had their smartphones as well as SIM cards confiscated. Rafizi, who lost his PKR deputy presidency in last month's elections, claimed that most of the content under probe were simply people's personal views on the party polls, and did not breach any law. 'After going through these complaints, my view is that this is a form of intimidation to pressure the public so they would refrain from posting content on the PKR elections. 'I believe Prime Minister (and PKR president) Anwar Ibrahim and communications minister Fahmi Fadzil did not issue such an order. 'Perhaps there are certain characters, using the names of ministers, who ordered the MCMC or police to pressure the public, just because they had different views on the party elections,' he said in a statement. Rafizi, the Pandan PKR chief, urged the authorities to cease from carrying out any further action against the netizens involved. He said several lawyers have volunteered to represent the social media users pro bono to challenge the actions taken by the authorities. Rafizi had lost the PKR deputy president's post to Nurul Izzah Anwar last month, and later resigned as economy minister. He is currently on leave and will officially vacate his minister's post on June 17.

Ex-KL Tower operator loses bid to cite minister for contempt
The Kuala Lumpur High Court dismissed Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd's bid to bring contempt proceedings and secure an injunction against the government and LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd with costs of RM65,000. (Envato Elements pic) KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court here has dismissed an attempt by the former operator of KL Tower to initiate contempt proceedings against communications minister Fahmi Fadzil and seven others, including federal territories land and mines director general Azmi Mohd Zain. Justice Roz Mawar Rozain ruled that the plaintiffs – Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd and Menara KL Sdn Bhd – failed to establish the commission of acts by the defendants that disrupted the administration of justice or court proceedings. 'The plaintiffs' lease expired on May 31 and (the government, named as a defendant in the proceedings) is entitled to retake possession,' the judge said when handing down her decision. Roz Mawar added that LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd, LSH Best Builders Sdn Bhd, and Service Master (M) Sdn Bhd, also named as defendants, came in subsequently under a new concession agreement. She ordered Hydroshoppe and Menara KL to pay a total of RM25,000 in costs to the government and LSH Service Master. The court also dismissed an injunction application filed by Hydroshoppe against the government and LSH Service Master, holding that it had been rendered academic. The judge ordered Hydroshoppe to pay the government and LSH Service Master an additional sum of RM40,000 as costs over the dismissal of the injunction. The court will hear the bids by the government and LSH Service Master to strike out Hydroshoppe's lawsuit on July 14. Hydroshoppe and Menara KL filed the suit claiming that the LSH group had induced the commission by the government of a breach of contract. They asked the court to declare the award of the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master void and unlawful. They also sought an estimated RM1 billion in damages, and for the concession to be transferred back to them. Lawyer Vinayak Sri Ram appeared for Hydroshoppe while senior federal counsel appeared for Fahmi and lawyer Malik Imtiaz Sarwar represented LSH Service Master.

Fahmi Reza to sue government over ‘travel ban'

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Graphic artist and activist Fahmi Reza says he will sue the government after being barred from travelling abroad, despite there being no official travel ban against him. Fahmi made the decision after Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Razarudin Husain today said there was no travel ban on Fahmi, who was prevented from flying to Singapore yesterday. Fahmi yesterday claimed an immigration officer informed him that Bukit Aman had denied him clearance to travel overseas. 'No one in the government has taken responsibility for restricting my right to travel,' said Fahmi in a statement today. 'You say there was no official ban — but I was still prevented from leaving the country. My time and money were wasted, and now you're passing the buck.' Fahmi criticised the authorities, saying they are quick to prosecute citizens but unwilling to be held accountable themselves. 'This time, the people will take the government to court,' he added. Earlier today, Razarudin clarified that the police did not issue a travel ban against Fahmi and said the incident was the result of a 'misunderstanding' during a border check. Separately, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he had instructed the police to investigate the matter, adding that the government supports individual freedom — as long as national security and laws are not compromised. Fahmi, known for his politically charged illustrations, was stopped at KLIA Terminal 2 yesterday while trying to board a flight to Singapore to attend a punk rock concert.
