Japan's ambassador meets Gujarat CM, focuses on stronger bilateral ties and semiconductor investment in Dholera
The meeting came on the final day of Ambassador Ono's three-day visit to Gujarat, which included high-level interactions with more than 150 industrialists in Ahmedabad and a visit to the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR).
During the meeting, Ono expressed appreciation for the support extended by the Gujarat government to more than 350 Japanese companies currently operating in the state.
He emphasised Japan's intention to further strengthen ties with Gujarat as the two nations mark 50 years of diplomatic friendship.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel welcomed the Japanese Ambassador, reiterating that "Gujarat is like a second home for Japan".
He highlighted the presence of two Japanese townships, a growing number of Japanese restaurants and industries, and consistent participation by Japan in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summits.
Chief Minister Patel noted that the Indo-Japan Annual Summit of 2017, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, had led to the successful execution of all signed MoUs.
The focus of the discussion centered around Japan's growing interest in the semiconductor sector.
Ambassador Ono conveyed that several Japanese companies are keen to invest in semiconductor manufacturing at Dholera SIR, leveraging Japan's technological expertise in the field.
He requested the Gujarat government to enhance industrial and social infrastructure, along with human resource development facilities, to support the sector's growth.
In response, CM Patel assured that Gujarat is giving top priority to the semiconductor sector and is committed to delivering world-class infrastructure within defined timelines.
He also welcomed Japan's initiative to conduct a survey through Mizuho Bank on establishing a robust ecosystem for semiconductor industries in Dholera and Japan's own semiconductor park.
The Chief Minister assured full cooperation from state departments in facilitating the study.
The Ambassador also underlined Japan's interest in electric vehicle manufacturing in Gujarat and stressed the need to further accelerate collaboration on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) Corridor.
He concluded by expressing Japan's desire to deepen commercial, industrial, and cultural exchanges with Gujarat as a way to fortify trilateral ties between Japan, India, and the state of Gujarat.
Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister M.K. Das, Principal Secretary (Industries) Mamta Verma, Additional Principal Secretary Avantika Singh, and Honourary Consul General of Japan in Gujarat Mukesh Patel were also present at the meeting.

‘People are paying taxes out of confidence in govt, fear of non-payment': Gujarat CM
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday said that people are now paying taxes with the confidence that the revenue is being used 'effectively' with government schemes 'reaching the most marginalised sections of society'. He also said the fear of strict action against non-payment has contributed to greater compliance. Businesses, he said, are also paying Goods and Services Tax (GST) because they are receiving the necessary support from the government and their enterprises are performing well. Patel was addressing a public meeting in Suigam village of Banaskantha district on Thursday, where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth Rs 358.37 crore. He made the remarks in the context of Income Tax Day. He said, 'Today is Income Tax Day… Today, many farmers have become income tax payers. Earlier, people used to run away from paying tax… Earlier, (people used to think that) when my neighbour is not paying the tax, why should I pay it… Now, people think that if the tax is not paid then it brings strict action. So, people pay the tax (also) with confidence that the income from tax is not only put to good use, but also that the benefit of government schemes has reached the most marginalised person. Its benefit has reached all.' Referring to GST, the CM said, 'The point is that when will the business class pay the tax? Will anybody pay tax just like that? One will pay the tax if the business is doing good and is earning well.' Without providing specifics, Patel said that Rs 2 lakh crore worth of GST had been collected in one month. 'The government is happy that it has made an income of Rs 2 lakh crore,' he said. 'If you want GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation) and business, then it requires facilities like roads, water, and electricity. If all these facilities are available, then good businesses are established. And when you do well, then you pay tax. It is a whole chain. Nobody is paying tax just like that. He (a businessman) will pay the tax when he gets all the facilities,' the CM said. Patel was accompanied by Gujarat Assembly Speaker and Banaskantha MLA Shankar Chaudhary, state Industries Minister Balvantsinh Rajput, and others.

BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty counters Mamata Banerjee's migrant claims, slams EC gherao call
BJP leader and actor Mithun Chakraborty on Thursday hit out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, dismissing her recent claims of harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in other states as 'baseless' and accusing her of spreading fear for political mileage ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Chakraborty alleged that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership was rattled by the Election Commission's (EC) ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as they feared losing control over their 'illegal vote bank.' 'Trinamool Congress leaders know that once the names of infiltrators are removed from the voters' list, they will not be able to win even 70 out of 294 seats in West Bengal in 2026. That is why they are panicking and opposing the EC's revision drive,' he said. Talking to reporters, the veteran actor-turned-politician said Banerjee's comments were aimed at 'stirring controversy' and 'creating unnecessary panic' among the people of Bengal. 'She wants to create controversy in everything. Nothing is going to happen. Bangla language will remain as it is. Mamata Banerjee has no monopoly over it. We will put up a strong fight,' Chakraborty, a former TMC Rajya Sabha MP, said. He had resigned from the TMC in 2016 and joined the BJP in 2021, just a month ahead of the Assembly polls. His comments came days after Banerjee, addressing a public rally, alleged that Bengali migrant workers were being harassed in states like Gujarat and Maharashtra and cautioned against what she described as the BJP's 'linguistic terrorism.' She also accused the EC of deleting names of minority and migrant voters from the electoral rolls in Bengal and neighbouring Bihar, and called upon her party workers to 'gherao' the Commission's offices in protest. Reacting sharply to the TMC supremo's gherao call, Chakraborty said such tactics were futile. 'The Election Commission must act. Fake and bogus voters have to be removed; only then will elections be fair. Even if the Commission is gheraoed, what will that achieve? What is the point of such protests?' he asked. Chakraborty further claimed that the highest number of illegal infiltrators who managed to get their names enrolled in the voters' list was in West Bengal, and this had long been 'exploited' by the ruling party. 'Names of genuine Bengali voters are not being deleted anywhere in India. Only those who infiltrated illegally and got themselves registered as voters are being weeded out,' he said. He also urged BJP workers in Bengal to assist the Election Commission in identifying such illegal entries. 'This is a collective responsibility. Our workers should come forward and help the Commission in identifying infiltrators whose names have wrongly entered the rolls,' Chakraborty said. The TMC, meanwhile, has been opposing the EC's special revision drive tooth and nail. Banerjee has even said her party would not allow the exercise to take place in the state, alleging that it was an indirect attempt to introduce the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in West Bengal. The war of words between the TMC and BJP comes amid rising political temperatures in the state ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. While the TMC has accused the BJP of disenfranchising minority and migrant voters and threatening Bengal's linguistic and cultural fabric, the saffron party has hit back, saying the ruling party is running a fear campaign to deflect from governance failures and protect its illegitimate vote bank.

‘Everything is being discussed': Congress's Bihar in-charge on Tejashwi's call for boycott of Assembly polls
A day after Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav responded to the idea of 'considering boycott' of the upcoming Assembly polls in the state over alleged 'discrepancies' in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Congress in-charge for the state, Krishna Allavaru, said on Thursday that 'discussions are going on on every option'. Allavaru's remarks at a press interaction at AICC headquarters on Akbar Road in Delhi came on a day when Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi reiterated that the Congress has 'concrete 100 per cent proof' that the Election Commission allowed cheating in a constituency in Karnataka. Gandhi also warned the poll panel that it would not get away with this 'because we are going to come for you'. Allavaru said that the INDIA bloc's stand has been clear from the beginning. 'This process is a theft of elections. And the Opposition is standing with the people in every possible way. Talks on every option are ongoing. But one thing is clear that through this process, the votes of the people of Bihar are being snatched away, elections are being stolen from them, and this is not just about Bihar, this is about the country and clearly, all avenues are open, everything is being discussed. When a decision is taken, you will be informed,' he said. In response to a question outside the Assembly on whether the Opposition could boycott polls, Tejashwi had said, 'We can discuss this. We will discuss this with allies and people. If such is the situation when one decides who gets (wins) how many seats, there is no need to hold elections.' Allavaru also challenged Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar 'to pick 1,000 random people in every constituency in Bihar and scrutinise if the laid down processes are being followed or not'. 'Even if 25 per cent turns out to be genuine, we will accept this procedure. The truth is, this voter list is of the BJP and Gyanesh Kumar. We don't accept it,' Allavaru said. Meanwhile, speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex on Thursday, Gandhi said that the poll panel is not functioning as the Election Commission of India and is 'not doing its job'. Claiming that his party has 'concrete 100 per cent proof' of the EC allowing cheating in a seat in Karnataka, Gandhi said, 'Not 90 per cent, when we decide to show it to you, it is a 100 per cent proof.' 'We just looked at one constituency, and we found this. I am absolutely convinced that constituency after constituency, this is the drama that is taking place. Thousands and thousands of new voters, how old are they? 45, 50, 60, 65, thousands and thousands of them in one constituency. This is one thing, voter deletion, voter addition, new voters who are way above 18 (is going on)… so we have caught them,' he said. 'I want to send a message to the Election Commission–if you think you are going to get away with this, if your officers think they are going to get away with this, you are mistaken, you are not going to get away with this because we are going to come for you,' Gandhi told reporters. Opposition parties on Thursday protested at Makar Dwar in the Parliament complex against the Bihar SIR. The protest saw MPs from most INDIA bloc parties in attendance.
