NBK prices $800 million in landmark Additional Tier 1 bond issuance
KUWAIT: National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) successfully priced a $800 million PNC6 Additional Tier 1 bond issuance (AT1)—its largest issuance to date in this capital tier—following strong investor demand.
The issuance was met with broad interest from global investors, marking a notable return to the GCC AT1 market after a brief pause that followed a concentrated wave of issuances in May. The issuance attracted strong demand, with subscription orders peaking at $2.2 billion—2.75x the issued amount—underscoring robust interest from a diversified pool of global investors and financial institutions. Private banks, in particular, played a pivotal role as key anchors during the orderbook building process. This overwhelming response reflects international investor confidence in NBK's solid credit profile and Kuwait's position as an attractive investment destination.
MENA-based investors accounted for 47 percent of total allocations, followed by investors from the UK (19 percent), the United States (18 percent), Europe (13 percent), and Asia (3 percent).
By investor type, asset managers and investment funds represented the largest share at 48 percent, followed by banks and private banking clients at 44 percent, while sovereign entities, insurance firms, and pension funds comprised the remaining 8 percent of total demand.
Robust investor demand enabled NBK to achieve highly favorable pricing for the issuance, with the final yield set at 6.375 percent—representing a 50 basis point tightening from the initial price thoughts (IPTs) of 6.875 percent (equivalent to UST+240.3bps). The investment-grade credit rating of the issuance, at Baa3 from Moody's, further enhanced its appeal—driving strong interest from international private banking platforms and global asset managers.
Citigroup, JP Morgan, HSBC, and Standard Chartered acted as Global Coordinators for the issuance, while the Joint Lead Managers included Citigroup, J.P. Morgan, HSBC, Standard Chartered, First Abu Dhabi Bank, Emirates NBD, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, KAMCO Investment Company, and National Bank of Kuwait.
The bonds, which will be listed on the London Stock Exchange, are expected to strengthen NBK's capital adequacy ratios. The new issuance was conducted in parallel with NBK's liability management exercise which offered holders of the Bank's outstanding $750 million Additional Tier 1 securities, issued on November 27, 2019, the option to roll their existing positions into the new offering.

Pakistan CB to launch pilot for digital currency
KARACHI/SINGAPORE: Pakistan's central bank is preparing to launch a pilot for a digital currency and is finalizing legislation to regulate virtual assets, Governor Jameel Ahmad said on Wednesday, as the country ramped up efforts to modernize its financial system. Central banks globally are exploring the use of digital currencies as interest in blockchain-based payments grows. Pakistan's move follows similar steps by regulators in China, India, Nigeria and several Gulf states to test or issue digital currencies through controlled pilot programs. At the Reuters NEXT Asia summit in Singapore, Ahmad said Pakistan was 'building up our capacity on the central bank digital currency' and hoped to roll out a pilot soon. He was speaking on a panel alongside Sri Lanka's central bank governor, P Nandalal Weerasinghe, with both discussing monetary policy challenges in South Asia. Ahmad said a new law would 'lay down the foundations for the licensing and regulation' of the virtual assets sector and that the central bank was in touch with some tech partners. The move builds on efforts by the government-backed Pakistan Crypto Council, set up in March to drive virtual asset adoption. The PCC is exploring bitcoin mining using surplus energy, has appointed Binance founder Changpeng Zhao as a strategic adviser and plans to establish a state-run bitcoin reserve. It has also held talks with US-based crypto firms, including the Trump-linked World Liberty Financial. In May, the State Bank of Pakistan clarified that virtual assets were not illegal. However, it advised financial institutions not to engage with them until a formal licensing framework was in place. 'There are risks associated, and at the same time, there are opportunities in this new emerging field. So we have to evaluate and manage the risk very carefully, and at the same time not allow to let go the opportunity,' he said on the panel. On Wednesday, Pakistan's state minister on blockchain and crypto, Bilal bin Saqib, said in a statement that Pakistan's government had approved the 'Virtual Assets Act, 2025' creating an independent regulator to license and oversee the crypto sector. Ahmad said the central bank would continue to maintain a tight policy stance to stabilize inflation within its 5–7 percent medium-term target. Pakistan has cut its benchmark rate from a peak of 22 percent to 11 percent over the past year, as inflation slumped from 38 percent in May 2023 to 3.2 percent in June, averaging 4.5 percent in the 2025 fiscal year just ended, a nine-year low. 'We are now seeing the results of this tight monetary policy transfer, both on our inflation as well as on the external account,' he said. Ahmad said Pakistan was not overly exposed to dollar weakness, noting its foreign debt was mostly dollar-denominated and only 13 percent comprised Eurobonds or commercial loans. 'We don't see any major impact,' he said, adding that reserves had risen to $14.5 billion from under $3 billion two years ago. – Reuters Ahmad said Pakistan's three-year $7 billion IMF program, which runs through September 2027, was on track and had resulted in reforms in fiscal policy, energy pricing and the foreign exchange market. 'We are confident that after that (IMF program), maybe we will not require an immediate (follow-up).' Asked whether Pakistan had financing plans lined up for upcoming military equipment purchases, particularly imports from China, Pakistan's central bank governor said he was not aware of such plans. – Reuters

UAE Cracks Down on Unauthorized Golden Visa Promoters
DUBAI, July 9: Dubai-based Rayad Group has issued an official apology and taken full responsibility for its role in promoting a controversial ' lifetime UAE Golden Visa ' scheme, following a firm denial by the UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP). The ICP had earlier warned the public against false claims circulating in the media regarding guaranteed lifetime residency in the UAE. Rayad Group acknowledged recent media attention and public confusion surrounding a so-called nomination-based Golden Visa initiative. The scheme referenced a fixed fee of AED 100,000 and implied lifetime residency, claims that the ICP has strongly refuted. Rayad Group clarified that the initiative was an exploratory partnership with licensed immigration service providers to assess the feasibility of offering advisory support to eligible applicants. The group emphasized that all visa decisions are solely under the jurisdiction of UAE government authorities and that their role was limited to private, non-binding advisory support. 'We have never claimed to guarantee visas or offer shortcuts to official procedures,' the group stated. 'We fully agree with the ICP's position that all Golden Visa applications must be submitted through official channels.' The group also issued an unreserved apology for any public misunderstanding caused, noting that certain statements made by its Managing Director were 'misplaced' and 'did not accurately reflect the company's scope of services or authority.' Rayad confirmed that it does not offer, endorse, or participate in any fixed-price or guaranteed visa programs and announced the discontinuation of its private advisory services for the Golden Visa. In a separate clarification, VFS ETM Services-FZCO, a business unit of VFS Global, confirmed that it had entered into a non-exclusive referral agreement with Rayad Group. It emphasized that its role was strictly limited to informing interested individuals about Rayad's services and directing them to the group, with no involvement in decision-making or processing applications. Meanwhile, the ICP reiterated on July 8 that all Golden Visa applications must be submitted through official UAE government platforms. The authority denied the existence of any lifetime Golden Visa arrangement and warned that no internal or external advisory entity is authorized to process applications. The ICP also stated that legal action would be taken against those spreading misinformation to exploit individuals seeking residency in the UAE. Several Indian and UAE-based media outlets had carried an unverified press release promoting the false claims, which ICP noted was neither supported by UAE law nor validated by competent authorities. The ICP urged the public to rely solely on official government platforms, such as the ICP website or smart application, to verify Golden Visa requirements and procedures. For accurate information, the public can also contact the ICP call centre at 600522222.

‘Trump Effect' website claims credit for $2.6tn in new investments
WASHINGTON: Within hours of taking office in January, President Donald Trump boasted about attracting $3 trillion in new corporate investments to the United States. Since then, Trump has said the investments have swelled to $14 trillion, or roughly half of the nation's annual gross domestic product. The White House calls it 'The Trump Effect' and features a rolling list on its website of more than 70 projects it says Trump's economic policies spurred, from a new bakery plant in Texas to a LEGO facility in Virginia and a microchip plant in Arizona. As of July 2, the website listed more than $2.6 trillion in US investments, well short of the $14 trillion Trump boasts about. But a Reuters review found that just under half of the claimed spending on the website - totaling more than $1.3 trillion - originated under former President Joe Biden or represented routine spending repackaged to promote domestic investments. At least eight of the projects touted by the White House had sought or secured critical local incentive packages before Trump took office while at least a half dozen other projects had already been announced by local officials or the companies themselves, Reuters found. Two of the Trump Effect projects were aided by Biden's legislative efforts to boost domestic manufacturing, the review found. One company on the list, Swiss-based Roche, warned that Trump's plans to equalize US and international drug prices now threatens its promised $50 billion in US investments. Asked about taking credit for projects already underway before Trump came into office, the White House said the final investment decisions were announced under his watch and prove his economic policies are triggering US investment. 'President Trump is the greatest closer in modern history, and his leadership and policies are a critical catalyst converting hypothetical discussions into firm investment commitments and ground being broken for new plants and offices,' White House spokesman Kush Desai said. The Reuters review included interviewing local officials and reviewing public records and corporate statements. It was not clear in many cases what role, if any, Trump or his policies played in getting the deals across the line. Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said his economic forecast - along with the consensus estimates - for investment in the economy has remained relatively unchanged despite the White House's claims of new historic investments. 'I think despite all the announcements it hasn't translated into any change in expectations,' Zandi said. 'The fundamentals that ultimately drive investment spending, broadly, if anything, appear to have weakened since the start of the year.' Trump's push to impose sweeping tariffs on dozens of trading partners has injected uncertainty into global markets, lowering economic projections and freezing investment decisions, Zandi said. Trump's supporters say his policies of deregulation combined with the extension of his corporate tax cuts last week have stoked interest from companies that will be converted into actual investments in the months ahead. 'I think you're going to see a lot more investment later this year, and certainly into next year,' Richard Stern, director of economic and budget policy at the conservative Heritage Foundation, said. The Trump Effect list is not exhaustive, according to the White House, and does not include the foreign deals the administration says Trump secured during his Middle East tour in May. The White House did not respond to a Reuters request to provide a breakdown of the $14 trillion in US investments Trump claims he has attracted. Trump wouldn't be the first president to inflate or embellish economic activity on his watch. But the onetime businessman has made his dealmaking the centerpiece of his political persona, promising his presidency would ignite a manufacturing renaissance that would bring jobs back to the US. Some companies, largely in the pharmaceutical industry, repackaged existing spending that was later touted as new investment by Trump. The pharmaceutical companies also credited Trump's 2017 tax cuts for spurring domestic investment. — Reuters
