PSG cruise past Atletico Madrid to get Club World Cup campaign off to perfect start
Atletico thought they had halved the deficit through Alvarez as Desire Doue was robbed by Koke, before Pablo Barrios fed Alvarez, who had peeled off his marker. The Argentine struck beyond Donnarumma, but the goal was chalked off by VAR for a foul on Doue by Koke, leaving Diego Simeone to sarcastically applaud on the touchline.

Nick Walsh to referee Germany vs France Euro U21 semi-final
The Scottish referee, alongside assistants Dan McFarlane and Calum Spence, and Andrew Dallas on VAR, was praised for officiating group games at the tournament in Slovakia. Their commendable performances have earned them a spot in the last four clashes. However, Walsh's appointment comes just a month after his contentious decision in the Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Hibs. Camera evidence indicated a goal by Nicolas Raskin, but Walsh and his team failed to award it. Read more: This decision led to Rangers legend John 'Bomber' Brown receiving punishment from the Scottish FA for a comment about corruption in Scottish football. The SFA's KMI panel later ruled that the goal should have been awarded. Other controversial decisions involving Walsh include the sending off of Mohamed Diomande for a 'slap' at Dundee United, which was later rescinded. Despite this, Walsh continues to officiate at a high level, with his team receiving further assignments in the European Championship. Their performance in this semi-final will be closely watched given the recent controversies.

Premier League refereeing errors fall to all-time LOW as worst-hit team revealed – and it's not Arsenal
UNDER REVIEW Premier League refereeing errors fall to all-time LOW as worst-hit team revealed – and it's not Arsenal REFEREEING errors fell to an all-time low in the Premier League last season - despite a series of controversies. According to the Prem's 'Key Match Incident Panel' - made up of former players, managers and refs - there were just 18 VAR errors over the 380 matches of the 2024-25 campaign. 6 Bruno Fernandes was wrongly sent off for a foul on James Maddison Credit: Getty 6 The Panel admitted it was incorrect to send off Myles Lewis-Skelly against Wolves Credit: PA 6 West Ham's last-gasp penalty against Man Utd was another mistake Credit: Alamy That was a 42 per cent drop on the 31 errors in 2023-24 and further down on the 35 mistakes assessed in the previous campaign. The panel looks at every major decision on goals, penalties and red cards, determining if the call by the onfield officials or the VAR was correct or flawed. SunSport understands the reduction was largely down to fewer missed VAR interventions on subjective decisions, although there were occasions in which Stockley Park wrongly recommended a change of call. Missed interventions included the red cards for Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes against Spurs, Arsenal left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly's dismissal at Wolves and the last minute penalty winner for West Ham that spelled the end for Old Trafford boss Erik ten Hag. Brentford were the biggest sufferers, with three mistakes which should have been changed in their favour, with Everton the beneficiaries of three errors. There were a number of occasions in which the KMI Panel agreed that the on-field decision was wrong but did not meet the threshold for a VAR intervention. The numbers will doubtless be met with disbelief from Arsenal fans who remain insistent that PGMOL have an agenda against them. Changes to time-keeping last season saw an average of nine minutes and 45 seconds of stoppage time per game, down 108 seconds from the previous season. The campaign saw 105 added time goals across the 380 matches, 40 fewer than in 2023-24. But VAR checks were significantly speeded up, with the average delay per match due to VAR down to 39 seconds from 64 seconds in the previous season. 6 VAR should have sent off Joao Pedro for his elbow Credit: Reuters 6 Arsenal were not on the wrong end of the most wrong decisions Credit: Getty
