Chhattisgarh: 66 Maoists surrender across five Bastar districts
Officials said 25 surrendered in Bijapur, 15 in Dantewada, 13 in Kanker, eight in Narayanpur, and five in Sukma; 27 of them were women.
According to the police, the surrendered cadres cited growing disillusion with the Maoist ideology, atrocities committed by the group on innocent tribals, and deepening internal rifts within the banned outfit. Many also said they were inspired by the state government's 'Niyad Nellanar' (Your Good Village) scheme, aimed at development in remote tribal areas, along with the new surrender and rehabilitation policy, and the Bastar police's 'Poona Margham' initiative for social reintegration.
In Bijapur, 23 of the 25 surrendered Maoists were carrying a collective bounty of ₹1.15 crore. Among them were Ramanna Irpa (37), a member of the Odisha State Committee and the Maoists' Special Zonal Committee, who carried a reward of ₹25 lakh, and his wife Rame Kalmu (30), a Platoon Party Committee Member (PPCM) with a bounty of ₹8 lakh. Others included Sukku Kalmu (38), Bablu Madvi (30), Kosi Madkam (28), and Reena Vanjam (28), each carrying rewards of ₹8 lakh.
In Dantewada, five of the 15 who surrendered had a total bounty of ₹17 lakh. Among them were Budhram alias Lalu Kuhram, a divisional committee member with a bounty of ₹8 lakh, and his wife Kamli alias Moti Potawi, who carried a reward of ₹5 lakh. With this latest surrender, a total of 1,020 Maoists — 254 of them carrying rewards — have given up arms under the 'Lon Varratu' (Return to Your Home) campaign launched in June 2020.
In Kanker, the 13 surrendered Maoists carried a combined reward of ₹62 lakh, according to superintendent of police Indira Kalyan Elesela.
In Narayanpur, the eight who laid down arms had a total bounty of ₹33 lakh. One of them, Vatti Ganga alias Mukesh (44), who served as the Maoists' north bureau technical team in charge, carried a reward of ₹8 lakh.
Each surrendered Maoist was given immediate assistance of ₹50,000 and will be rehabilitated under the provisions of the state government's surrender and reintegration policy.

Chhattisgarh: 4 Maoists killed in Bijapur encounter; security forces recover arms and ammunition
In a significant counter-insurgency operation success, four reward-carrying Maoists were killed during a prolonged encounter with security forces in the dense forest region of Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh, the police said on Sunday. The operation, launched by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) on July 26, was based on specific intelligence inputs regarding Maoist activity near the Basaguda and Gangaloor police station limits in the district's south-western corridor. The gunfight began in the evening and continued intermittently through the night. Among the deceased were two women cadres, all affiliated with the South Sub Zonal Bureau of the banned CPI (Maoist), said the official. The slain insurgents were identified as Hunga (ACM, Platoon 10), Lakkhe (ACM, Platoon 30), Bhime (ACM), and Nihal alias Rahul, a party member and bodyguard to the Bureau Communication Head. Collectively, they carried a bounty of Rs 17 lakh. Security personnel recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from the site, including one SLR rifle, one INSAS rifle, one .303 rifle, a 12 bore gun, a BGL launcher, a single-shot 315 bore rifle, and an AK-47. In addition, multiple magazines, live rounds, grenades, BGL cells, Maoist literature, and daily-use items were seized. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P. confirmed that the operation was part of an intensified anti-LWE campaign in the region. He noted that 425 hardcore Maoists have been neutralised between January 2024 and July 2025, attributing the success to strategic planning, operational courage, and community support. Despite challenging monsoon conditions -- marked by rugged terrain, dense foliage, and persistent rainfall -- security forces maintained high morale and operational readiness. The encounter underscores the state's continued efforts to dismantle Maoist strongholds and restore civil order in insurgency-hit zones. The operation remains on-going, with forces maintaining heightened alert across the Bastar division, which has historically been a hotbed of left-wing extremism.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat says India no longer has to be golden bird, time to become a lion
India has to become strong and also wealthy from an economic point of view as the world understands power, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Sunday. Bhagwat also said that India no longer has to be the 'golden bird' and it was time for it to become a 'lion'. 'It is necessary because the world understands power. So Bharat should become strong. It also has to become wealthy from an economic perspectives,' he added, while speaking at the national education conference, 'Gyan Sabha', organised by the RSS-linked Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas in Kochi. The RSS chief went on to say that 'Bharat' should not be translated as otherwise it would lose its identity and along with it the respect it enjoys in the world. According to a PTI report, Mohan Bhagwat also said that Bharat, a proper noun, should not be translated as its identity is respected 'because it is Bharat'. "Bharat is a proper noun. It should not be translated. 'India is Bharat'. That is true. But Bharat is Bharat. That is why, while talking, writing and speaking, be it personal or public, we should keep Bharat as Bharat. 'Bharat must remain Bharat. The identity of Bharat is respected because it is Bharat. If you lose your identity, whatever other meritorious qualities you may have, you will never be respected or secure in this world. That is the thumb rule,' PTI quoted the RSS chief as saying. Just a day ago, Bhagwat had said that the education system in the country was developed under the long-term influence of colonial ideas and for a developed nation, an alternative based on Indian philosophy needs to be formulated. For that, the focus should be 'deep, realistic, and completely Indian-based,' Bhagwat said. According to the statement issued by the Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, Bhagwat said during the conference that the workers should become competent in the field they work, be role models in it and develop friendly relations in order to lead others forward. Before the meeting began, RSS chief Bhagwat visited the birthplace of Adi Shankaracharya and lit a traditional lamp (Nilavilakku) to mark the start of the conference, held at the Chitvilasam auditorium. Around 100 delegates from across India, including national coordinators of the Nyas and experts in education, are taking part in the discussions. The focus of the two-day meeting is on building a roadmap for educational reforms to support the vision of a developed India (Viksit Bharat).

Police arrest key accused in 2014 Bejai shootout linked to Ravi Pujari gang
Mangaluru (Karnataka), Jul 27 (PTI) A fugitive accused in the 2014 shootout at Bharati Builders' office in Bejai, Mangaluru– allegedly orchestrated by associates of underworld gangster Ravi Pujari–has been arrested after nearly a decade on the run, police said on Sunday. Acting on reliable inputs and under the guidance of the City Police Commissioner, a team from Urwa Police Station, including Inspector Venugopal and constables Pramod, Narayan, and Govindraj, apprehended the accused Ganesh Sakat in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, Police said in a release. Sakat was produced before the court, and has been remanded to judicial custody, it said. The case, registered at Urwa Police Station, under sections 447 (Criminal trespass), 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 27 of the Arms Act. The accused, a native of Karad in Maharashtra's Satara district, had been absconding since 2015 after failing to appear before the JMFC 3rd Court in Mangaluru, which subsequently issued a warrant for his arrest. Police revealed that the accused is also wanted in another case registered at Kavoor Police Station. Additionally, he faces charges under the Arms Act in Karad, Maharashtra.
