Rob Font after another betting upset at UFC Fight Night 252: 'Put some respect on my name'

USA Today23-02-2025

SEATTLE – For the second straight fight, Rob Font conquered the task of a young up-and-comer placed in front of him by the UFC.
On the UFC Fight Night 252 main card Saturday at Climate Pledge Arena, Font (22-8 MMA, 12-7 UFC) handed Jean Matsumoto (16-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) his first career loss in exciting fashion.
'I was the underdog in this one, too?' Font said to reporters including MMA Junkie upon learning the odds at a post-fight news conference. 'Come on, man. You've got to put some respect on my name, man.'
Font, 37, has been in the promotion since 2014. For years, he's fought top-ranked competition including the likes of Jose Aldo, Cory Sandhagen, Deiveson Figueiredo and Marlon Vera.
After a 1-4 stretch, Font switched training camp locations and went to Tristar in Montreal to train under coach Firas Zahabi. He's 2-0 since, also having defeated Kyler Phillips in October. He says confidence in the wrestling has been the biggest X-factor change in his game.
'I think before I was trying so hard not to get taken down,' Font said, of what's changed in camp. 'Obviously, I'm still working my takedown defense and all that. I just got a new confidence of getting back to my feet. Even when I first got to Tristar, we was working double-leg scrambles, single-leg scrambles. I'm getting taken down often. It's not like I'm just stopping takedowns. I'm getting taken down but I feel like I'm getting so much better at getting back to my feet. Then, when I do start stopping takedowns, that's when I'm like, 'Oh, let's go.'
'When you do take me down, I'm popping up. The moment I start digging my double-underhooks and sprawling and facing ahead, it's going to be a problem for a lot of people. I'm almost there. I'm still figuring it out. It doesn't come as natural to me, but I'm getting there.'
Back on a winning streak for the first time since 2021, Font hopes to keep the momentum rolling. While he's done well against rising bantamweights, Font wants a more established name next time out.
'I hope, I hope,' Font said. 'Obviously, I went from fighting at GOAT like Dominick Cruz to fighting not necessarily a newcomer but a guy who only has two fights in the UFC, is 16-0. He's really, really impressive, super strong, talented. Obviously I'm two wins in a row. Hopefully it gets me back in there with another top name. We'll find out soon.

Vicente Luque vs. Kevin Holland prediction, pick, start time for UFC 316

Vicente Luque vs. Kevin Holland prediction, pick, start time for UFC 316 All-action welterweights Vicente Luque and Kevin Holland clash in the UFC 316 main card opener. How long will it last? Vicente Luque and Kevin Holland meet Saturday in the main card opener of UFC 316 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom. Last event: 3-2 UFC main cards, 2025: 49-41-1 Vicente Luque vs. Kevin Holland UFC 316 preview Luque (23-10-1 MMA, 16-6 UFC) will look to win back-to-back UFC fights for the first time since 2021. The 33-year-old welterweight has gone 2-3 over his last five, but enters the UFC 316 main card opener on the heels of a bonus-earning submission of Themba Gorimbo in December. ... Holland (27-13 MMA, 14-10 UFC) finds himself in a similar position as his opponent. He enters on the heels of a unanimous decision win over Gunnar Nelson in March, and will be looking for his first back-to-back win since 2023. The 32-year-old is much more active than Luque, but has struggled to maintain winning momentum. Vicente Luque vs. Kevin Holland UFC 316 expert pick, prediction The paid portion of the card kicks off with a welterweight showdown between Luque and Holland. Despite a brain bleed threatening the career of Luque after his war with Geoff Neal, the Brazilian action fighter has steadily been trying to rekindle the form that brought him to prominence. And though Luque is coming off a vintage-style win over Themba Gorimbo last December, it's still hard to know exactly where Luque is, given how long that fight lasted. Holland may seem like the obvious pick at first glance, but we can't forget the inconsistencies he traditionally comes with as well. Whether Holland is having a nip-and-tuck affair with the skeleton of Santiago Ponzinibbio or is outright refusing win conditions against a retirement home-level Stephen Thompson, "Trail Blazer" can be tough to trust – particularly as a heavy favorite. Don't get me wrong: Holland winning this via some straight punches down the pike is the most probable outcome this Saturday. However, with Luque being further and further along from his head injury and his recent trends of grappling, I find myself taking a semi-reluctant shot on Luque to score the upset. The pick is Luque by submission in Round 1. Vicente Luque vs. Kevin Holland UFC 316 odds The oddsmakers and the public favor the American fighter, listing Holland -265 and Luque +210 via FanDuel. Vicente Luque vs. Kevin Holland UFC 316 start time, how to watch As the main card opener, Luque and Holland are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 9:10 p.m. ET. The fight broadcasts on ESPN+ pay-per-view.

Mario Bautista vs. Patchy Mix prediction, pick, start time for UFC 316

Mario Bautista vs. Patchy Mix prediction, pick, start time for UFC 316 Patchy Mix finally gets the chance to prove himself on the biggest stage at UFC 316. Will Mario Bautista spoil his debut? Mario Bautista and Patchy Mix meet Saturday on the main card of UFC 316 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom. Last event: 3-2 UFC main cards, 2025: 49-41-1 Mario Bautista vs. Patchy Mix UFC 316 preview Bautista (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) has the opportunity to play spoiler in the debut of a big-name bantamweight with championship promise. Entering on a seven-fight winning streak, Bautista is confident that he can extend his victorious run. In 2024, Bautista, 31, picked up the two biggest wins of his career thus far in decision wins over Ricky Simon and UFC Hall of Famer Jose Aldo. ... Mix (20-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) finally gets his chance to prove his skills in the UFC. The former Bellator champion has widely been considered to be one of the best bantamweights on the planet. Frustration with lack of fights led to his exit from the PFL. Mix's last appearance was a split decision win over Magomed Magomdeov last May to record his second Bellator title defense. Mario Bautista vs. Patchy Mix UFC 316 expert pick, prediction Serving as a solid bantamweight attraction is a matchup between Bautista and Mix. Making his long-awaited promotional debut on short notice, this opportunity has been something that Mix has low-key been preparing for for some time now. That said, Bautista is a deceptively tough test that deserves to be acknowledged. Bautista isn't exactly Mr. Popular at the moment after banking a controversial decision over fan favorite Jose Aldo at UFC 307 last year, but that doesn't change the fact that he's an incredibly well-rounded fighter who is on a serious 7-fight win streak. Mix's win streak could also be overlooked for similar reasons coming off of his last fight, but that was well over a year ago as I suggest leaving some room to be surprised as far as potential skill jumps go. It's hard to say exactly how comfortable Bautista is against UFC-level southpaws given that he has a limited 1-1 sample size, but I do wonder how well his game will function without the outlet of his grappling. And though Bautista is a sound scrambler who gets stronger as the fight goes on, he does tend to surrender a lot of takedowns and positions early that Mix could make hay with. A submission win from the final Bellator champion shouldn't shock anyone, but I'll officially pick Mix to edge out a decision over Bautista in a fight that I see being ultra-competitive down the stretch. Mario Bautista vs. Patchy Mix UFC 316 odds The oddsmakers and the public favor the final Bellator champion, listing Mix -180 and Bautista +146 via FanDuel. Mario Bautista vs. Patchy Mix UFC 316 start time, how to watch Bautista and Mix are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 9:40 p.m. ET. The fight broadcasts on ESPN+ pay-per-view.
