It took the Giants 18 batters Friday night before they picked up their first baserunner — a Christian Koss single — and that perfectly summed up their 3-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

Twins starter Chris Paddack dominated the Giants, taking a perfect game into the sixth inning before Koss lined a solid base hit to center field with two outs in the frame.
The Giants' only run of the game came when Matt Chapman connected for his eighth homer of the season in the seventh inning, taking Paddack deep to left.
Paddack, who hadn't pitched beyond the fifth inning this season, allowed three hits and one earned run in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out six Giants batters.
Jordan Hicks made his eighth start of the season and he pitched well overall, but his first-inning struggles bit him again.

Hicks found himself in immediate trouble, giving up a leadoff triple to Byron Buxton to begin the game and the next batter, Trevor Larnach, brought the center fielder home with an RBI single.
Hicks settled down, giving up runs in the fourth and fifth, but the Giants' offense couldn't figure out Paddack, making any comeback attempt futile.
In six innings, Hicks allowed seven hits, three earned runs, while striking out six. He didn't walk any batters, a positive sign for the 28-year-old.
But Hicks and the Giants will have to figure out how to address his first-inning woes. He entered Friday's game with a 12.86 ERA in seven starts. He lowered that number to 12.38 after his latest outing, but he still put San Francisco in an early hole.

Overall, Hicks has a 5.82 ERA this season, and while the Giants are committed to let him start games, they might have to consider a rotation change as they compete for an NL playoff spot.

Those days of optimism appear to be dwindling after Boston's latest setback. Advertisement The Red Sox lost their 17th one-run game of the season on Tuesday, this time falling 4-3 to the Los Angeles Angels in 10 innings filled with missed opportunities, poor execution defensively and another inconsistent night from the bullpen. It was their eighth loss in 10 games. They are now 9-10-1 in series play, including 4-5-1 at Fenway Park. 'We keep making the same mistakes. We're not getting better,' Cora said after the game. 'At one point it has to be on me I guess. I'm the manager. I've got to keep pushing them to be better. They're not getting better. They're not. We keep making the same mistakes. I'll be honest about it and very open about it." Tuesday's loss came a night after Boston also lost by a run to an Angels team that had lost seven of eight and three consecutive series. The game started out with some promise. Advertisement Starting pitcher Brayan Bello pitched a scoreless first to snap a four-game streak of Boston pitchers allowing at least one run in the opening inning. But then the Angels took a 3-0 lead in the third inning via an RBI single by Zach Neto and a two-run single by Nolan Schanuel. Boston got one run back during its half of the inning but failed to close the gap more despite having runners on second and third base with no outs. The Red Sox outhit the Angels for the second straight game. But also also committed three fielding errors. 'You get frustrated, but at one point, OK, what are you going to do? What's going to change? TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Drew Rasmussen extended his MLB-leading scoreless streak to 23 innings with five innings of one-hit ball and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Texas Rangers 5-1 on Tuesday night. Rasmussen (5-4) allowed only a single to Jake Burger in the third inning and struck out eight in a game that was delayed for less that 20 minutes due to rain in the third in front of an announced crowd of 9,131 at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Advertisement Kameron Misner put Tampa Bay on the board with a solo homer in the second inning. In the sixth inning, Yandy Diaz scored on a wild pitch by the Rangers' Jacob Latz. Jonathan Aranda scored on an infield single by Jake Mangum before Junior Caminero stole home when Misner struck out looking.
