Marten Van Riel promises best is yet to come in T100 Triathlon
By James Reid
Reigning T100 Triathlon champion Marten Van Riel insists the best is yet to come after he returned to the podium in Vancouver.
The Belgian athlete was left disappointed with a sixth-placed finish in San Francisco two weeks ago that dented his hopes of winning back-to-back T100 titles.

But Van Riel roared back from his sub-par showing in the States with a second place in Vancouver, as he took silver behind the fast-finishing Jelle Geens.
It moves Van Riel top of the overall standings after he also finished third in Singapore in April, but the Belgian is confident he has even more to bring to the table later in the year.
'I think Rico [Bogen] and Jelle have really shown their cards in the last couple of races, and I think I'm just not quite there yet,' he said.
'I got a little bit sick on altitude training in the preparation [for this race] and I feel and know that my run isn't quite 100%. To be this close to Jelle on the run, who's one of the best in the sport is actually good for my morale.

'My bike is really good at the moment so I'm confident I've got more in the tank for the Race To Qatar.
'We've seen the top athletes get good scores and I hope Hayden [Wilde] returns as soon as possible because he really showed up in Singapore for the first race, so I don't count him out at all. It's going to be very interesting, especially with double points for the final in Qatar.'
Van Riel took the mantle on the bike leg but was quickly joined by Rico Bogen, Kyle Smith and Mika Noodt.
Both Noodt and Smith endured drafting penalties at separate points, but were able to keep themselves in touching distance of Van Riel and Bogen, who were the first to hit the run.

But a storming comeback from Geens earned him the victory and forced Van Riel to settle for second.
'It was a hard swim, because there was a current pushing us either into the buoys or away from the buoys,' reflected Van Riel. 'Then topped off with a very tough run, but I'm very happy to be on the podium again.
'I was leading at the start of the bike and it took a long time for someone to challenge me. I thought, damn, I must be strong in aero today! I was happy with that.'

Star receiver Brandon Aiyuk was as engaged as he could be at the San Francisco 49ers mandatory minicamp, which should be noted as a positive sign in his injury recovery.
Star receiver Brandon Aiyuk was as engaged as he could be at the San Francisco 49ers mandatory minicamp, which should be noted as a positive sign in his injury recovery. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Brandon Aiyuk tore his ACL and MCL in the San Francisco 49ers' Week 7 game last season. After surgery in November, the assumption remains that the star wide receiver will miss a chunk of games in the beginning of the 2025 season, leaving some Niners fans concerned about the rest of the receiving corps for quarterback Brock Purdy. Advertisement Even after trading away Deebo Samuel, San Francisco should have plenty of weapons to compete. Receivers Jauan Jennings and George Kittle are hoping to pick up where they left off from their fantastic 2024 seasons. Sophomore Ricky Pearsall, once he's done nursing a minor hamstring issue, is expected to have an impactful role, as well. Adding two rookies to the mix and a healthy-as-possible Christian McCaffrey, it's not a stretch to say the 49ers can still win a lot of games before Aiyuk returns. As the 49ers commence mandatory minicamp, it's visually telling that Aiyuk wants to be back in action. His attendance - however minor his activity is - should be looked at as a good sign of where his mentality is at. Aiyuk was seen on the grass hanging around his fellow wide receivers during position drills. Ball in hand, he remained involved by encouraging teammates in between reps and offering some advice to the youngsters. Occasionally, he would test out the legs with some cuts and light jogging. Advertisement These are baby steps - literally and figuratively - but his body language is a takeaway that could build some optimism. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after practice Tuesday and briefly touched on where Aiyuk is in his rehab. "He's making his way back, he's still in the middle of it, so he's working through that," Shanahan said. "He's been around, been rehabbing for the most part. He's been out to some practices and it was good to have him out today." Shanahan also confirmed that Aiyuk will likely not be ready for the start of training camp in late July. There is an increasing belief that the former 1,300-yard receiver will start the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, meaning he will miss at least the first four games. San Francisco 49ers Hope for Continued Growth from 3rd-Year Linebacker Dee Winters
San Francisco 49ers Hope for Continued Growth from 3rd-Year Linebacker Dee Winters originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers hope for a resurgent 2025 campaign after a 6-11 mark and missing the playoffs last year. Advertisement Off to a good start already after the arrival of Robert Saleh as the team's new/old defensive coordinator, the defense will get some help from new additions through free agency and the NFL draft. But Saleh will also be looking internally for improvement, and he could find it in linebacker Dee Winters. Last offseason, star linebacker Fred Warner touted Winters as the best player at OTAs. But that didn't translate to the regular season, where Winters struggled to get playing time. Per Grant Cohn, Winters didn't exactly have a stellar season. "Winters played just 398 defensive snaps last season — he wasn't a full-time player. And when he was on the field, he made some plays, but he also often ran around like a chicken with its head cut off," Cohn wrote. "He didn't always have great instincts for the football, which is one reason the 49ers gave up the fourth-most points in the league last year." Advertisement But Winters is once again thriving in OTAs, and Saleh has been impressed. "He's been impressive," Saleh said. "Again, it's easy when it's OTAs and you're not having to deal with run-pass reads and everything's a little bit slower, but he's got something to him. I don't want to jinx him or anything, but if he stays on his trajectory and he attacks these next 40 days and he does things the right way, I think he's due for a heck of a season." Saleh is here to turn things around defensively. And if he can do that with some guys left over from the old regime on defense, then even better. The San Francisco 49ers' $265 million quarterback has not gotten off to a good start at mandatory minicamp practice ... but it isn't all bad news quite yet.
The San Francisco 49ers' $265 million quarterback has not gotten off to a good start at mandatory minicamp practice ... but it isn't all bad news quite yet. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's June. The San Francisco 49ers have only had one day of mandatory minicamp. Advertisement Some will understand that players are using this time to knock off rust from the offseason. But others will overanalyze each repetition and judge the good and bad, however major or minor. Some of the bad, so far? Quarterback Brock Purdy, the Niners' new highest-paid player with a contract averaging a $53 million salary signed a few weeks ago. Reports out of San Fran's camp say that Purdy threw three interceptions during the team portion of Tuesday's practice. 49ers fans may want to cover their eyes and ears, but this struggle could be defended as it's something we've seen before. "All three passes were forced either to receivers who weren't open or spots where defenders were waiting," beat writer Grant Cohn explained. Advertisement "This is how Purdy practices. He often throws interceptions because he's trying to figure out what he can get away with during real games. Plus, he's not a great practice player. He's a gamer and a playmaker who performs his best when the bullets are live because his ability to scramble and buy time is his best attribute. And he's not afraid to let it rip, which is why he throws so many picks." There's some honesty both ways here. Throwing three interceptions during a not-so-intense practice isn't very good ... but this behavior from Purdy is sometimes unavoidable in practice. He thrives on the improvisation that can only be felt in game environments. During these set programs, he doesn't have the chance to make a play out of nothing when there isn't a strong rush. So, it may not be abnormal to see him forcing tough throws even when there is something easier in an attempt to replicate that difficulty he thrives in. Advertisement That no-fear mentality could still be looked at as a positive. It's better to have a quarterback who is confident in his ability and decision-making rather than passive. As long as this isn't an every-down occurrence, 49ers fans don't have much to stress about. However, with how the 49ers' season went last year, it makes sense why fans might be skeptical. Last season, Purdy saw a considerable drop off in passing numbers. He threw for less yards and touchdowns and his completion percentage lowered from 69.4 to 65. He threw just one more interception last season than the year before (12 in 2024 to 11 in 2023). Health played a major factor in the 49ers disappointing 6-11 season, with Purdy himself managing to play with a bum shoulder toward the end of the year. He was inactive for the Niners' Week 10 and Week 18 games. Advertisement Outside of receiver Brandon Aiyuk, San Francisco is expected to welcome more luck on that front this season. He's hoping for a bounce-back season, and while this was a rough day at the office, Brock Purdy - at just 25 years old - hasn't lost his Pro-Bowl ability. There are plenty of practices until Week 1 for San Francisco's star signal-caller to get his feet under him.
