But now it can be revealed that he won't be returning alone.
The BBC soap is set to begin rebuilding one of its main families with the Brannings to take centre stage once more.
Max's comeback will also see his son Oscar arrive in Walford for the first time since 2017 - and he's being played by a brand new recast.
Actor Pierre Moullier will play the now teenage Oscar taking over the role from Charlee Hall who last appeared in eight years ago.
A source said: 'It is an exceptional bout of casting - Pierre looks more like a younger Jake than Jake did himself. It's uncanny.
'He's going to bring something new to Oscar and the character will definitely set the cat amongst the pigeons in the Square.'
Actor Jake quit the BBC One soap in 2021 after 15 years to focus on other acting projects.
His comeback coincides with former on-screen lover Stacey Slater, played by Lacey Turner, preparing to depart Walford.
A telly source said: 'Jake's return is huge news for EastEnders fans as his character made a massive mark on the show.
'It'll raise some eyebrows after he was absent from the 40th anniversary earlier this year. Bosses are excited about what his character's reappearance means for spicing up the plots.
EastEnders changes famous theme in honour of Max Branning's exit after 15yrs
'There is plenty to go at. Max has loads of unfinished business in the Square and is set to ruffle some feathers.'
Speaking earlier this year Jake admitted he missed being part of the soap — except for the busy filming regime.
He said: 'I don't miss the schedules. Anyone will tell you how hard they are and sort of all-consuming, but obviously I miss a lot of the people.
'When you're at the centre of a big storyline like EastEnders Christmas, something like that — it's a real thrill as an actor to be a part of that, big storylines, big characters.'
EastEnders' 40th anniversary cameos so far
With the 40th anniversary of EastEnders coming up, fans are looking forward to some more incredible cameos from iconic faces of Walford's past. But who have we had so far?
Tracy-Ann Oberman - Oberman returned as Chrissie Watts, a character she last played nearly two decades ago.
Paul Bradley - Bradley returned as Nigel Bates, a character he last played over 25 years ago.
Micheal French - French returned as David Wicks, a character he last played two decades ago.
Patsy Palmer - Palmer returned as Bianca Jackson, a character she last played in 2019.
Ricky Groves - Groves returned as Garry Hobbs, a character who has not been seen since 2009.
Cliff Parisi - Parisi returned as Minty Peterson, a character who was last seen on the square in 2010.
Ross Kemp - Kemp has returned to play Grant Mitchell, a character he first played in 1990. The BBC has described Kemp's storyline as "explosive". Kemp said it was an "absolute honour" to return to the show.
Other aspects of the EastEnders 40th anniversary celebration include: A wedding between fan favorites, A huge explosion at the Queen Vic, and A live interactive episode.
Earlier this month EastEnders scooped a TV Bafta for best soap — with executive producer Kate Oates teasing: 'If you like a return, I don't think you're going to be disappointed because there's potentially one on the cards.
'We've got some uncharted territory.'

Doctor Who star breaks silence on surprise exit after rumours of bitter BBC row
Ncuti Gatwa has left his role as the Doctor after just two years and Billie Piper is set to take over after his regeneration on the show's latest season finale Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa has spoken out about his departure from the beloved sci-fi series. The actor, 32, who first gained widespread recognition in Netflix 's Sex Education, said an unexpected emotional farewell during the dramatic season finale on Saturday night. After two series flying through space and time to put the universe to rights in the TARDIS, Ncuti has officially stepped down from his role as the Time Lord. His successor has already been confirmed as Billie Piper, who previously played the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler in 2005. After speculation that this exit is happening as a result of a rift with the BBC, Ncuti has addressed his departure in a video, explaining that the demands of the role had taken a toll on him both physically and mentally. He shared: "It's a role that demands a lot of you physically and emotionally and mentally. The actors playing the Doctor are only actors playing the Doctor. Unfortunately, we are mere mortals. "I would love to have the energy and the youth to be able to do this full time for the rest of my life, but my knees are telling me it's time." He also took to social media to reflect on the wild journey his version of the Doctor had experienced over the last two years. Ncuti wrote: "'Monsters, goblins, gods, human-eating Slugs, invisible brain altering creatures, evil barbers, conspiracy theorists… you've had quite a busy two years. Well done and rest up son. Thank you endlessly XV." In his farewell message, Ncuti also acknowledged how hard it is to say goodbye to the role, saying: "You know when you get cast, at some point, you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. This journey has been one that I will never forget and a role that will be part of me forever. "There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe." His comments come in the wake of online speculation that he had been suddenly dropped from the role. Some fans pointed out that Ncuti previously said he was preparing to film another season of Doctor Who, and questioned what prompted the change of plan. One posted online saying: "In October 2024, Ncuti Gatwa was on The Graham Norton Show saying he was going to be filming another series of DW [Doctor Who] next year. In June 2025, he officially leaves the show and regenerates. This was never the plan. What a shame." However, the BBC was quick to shut down those claims. A spokesperson said: "Whilst we never comment on the future of the Doctor, any suggestion that Ncuti Gatwa has been 'axed' is pure fiction." Now Billie Piper is going to be the second woman ever to play the Time Lord, following Jodie Whittaker, who also made a surprise cameo in the finale.

Gorgeous moment Danny Dyer saw daughter Dani in wedding dress for first time
Danny Dyer's daughter, Dani Dyer, said she'd had the 'best day of her life' when she married footballer, Jarrod Bowen, on Saturday, at a lavish bash in Buckinghamshire Dani Dyer has shared the adorable moment her proud dad, Danny, saw her in her wedding dress for the first time when she got married to Jarrod Bowen on Saturday. The Love Island star, 28, said she'd had the 'best day of her life' at the lavish nuptials in Buckinghamshire at which EastEnders star Danny, 47, played a very important role. In a gorgeous montage of snaps of the big day shared on Instagram, Danny can be seen waiting in anticipation for his firstborn to reveal her stunning wedding dress as she prepared to become Mrs Bowen. As Dani turns round, sporting a beautiful off-the-shoulder white silk gown, with her hair tied into an elegant bun, Danny's eyes fill with tears as he gives his daughter a huge hug. Danny walked Dani, who has now changed her name to Dani Dyer-Bowen, down the aisle at the wedding at the five-star Langley Hotel while the Love Island star's two-year-old twin daughters, Summer and Star, were flower girls. The Football Factory star also gave a speech during the reception, which was reportedly 'toned down' before the big day by Dani's mum, Jo. After the newlyweds said 'I do', Danny couldn't resist injecting a bit of football banter into the proceedings. In videos shared on social media, he can be heard encouraging guests to sing 'Bowen's On Fire - and he's married Dani Dyer ' to the tune of pop star Gala's hit Freed from Desire, as guests could be seen waving white napkins in the air. Speaking about how important it was for Danny to give Dani a wedding she'd 'never forget', a source told the Mirror: "Family is everything to Dani and Danny is the same way. He pulled out all of the stops to make sure it's a wedding no one would forget for his little girl – the best day of her life. "He adores her and actually says he's got her to thank for some things because Dani winning Love Island boosted his career too. Dani feels she has found her soulmate in Jarrod and it's a relief after she's had so many ups and downs. "Everyone else loves him too. Jarrod and Danny get on so well, which was important to Dani, so it was always going to be a wonderful celebration for the family.' Hammers fan Danny is also a huge fan of his son-in-law, who plays for his beloved West Ham football team. Speaking about his daughter's relationships, Danny told the Mirror: "I have gone from the lying scum, and I hate them, to a man who I would not mind tonguing myself! "A strong man. If he lent in I would put my lips on this geezer. He is just, as a father and joking aside, he took her on with a 14 month old son and that says a lot about a man I will tell you." He added: 'He is amazing. I can't wait to give her away. What a touch. But if he was to make a move on me before… I think I'm in love with him, slightly.'

Race Across The World star's heartbreaking wish before tragic death at 24
Sam Gardiner appeared on the BBC show Race Across The World alongside his mother, Jo, in 2020, and during that time, he opened up about their relationship and his hopes for his future Race Across The World star Sam Gardiner has tragically died at the age of 24 after he was involved in a car crash in Manchester last week, which his family have described as a 'terrible accident.' It comes just a few years after he appeared on the second series of the BBC adventure show with his mum, Jo, and during that time, he made a heartbreaking wish for his future. Sam was 19 years old when he joined Race Across the World with his mum, which saw them embark on a seven-week journey from Mexico City's Chapultepec Castle to Ushuaia in Argentina. They reflected on their experience, noting how it had strengthened their bond. Sam described their venture as "life-changing", telling his mum: "How many 19-year-olds can say they've done this and travelled with their mum?". Jo replied: "I think just you, really. We've got long journeys, you're trying to balance it with enjoying yourself, but also have a budget, there's bound to be stresses. But I think our relationship is still in tact even if you find me slightly more irritating that you used to." She added: "This has been really great fun." But before they started their memorable trip, Sam made an admission with a wish for his future. He shared: "To create some memories with my mum will be one of the best things. I'm so happy to be doing it with my mum." He added: "It's what I'll be able to live by and tell my kids when I go travelling with them." The clip was shared at the time in a Facebook post by BBC Two, which read: "This is so moving! The story of 19-year-old Sam, who's travelling with his mum Jo, is giving us all the feels." News of Sam's passing was confirmed over the weekend, with his parents issuing a heartwrenching tribute. His devasted dad, Andrew Gardiner, wrote in a statement: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved son Sam in a terrible accident. "Sam left us far too soon, and whilst words will never fully capture the light, joy and energy he brought into our lives, we hold on to the memories that made him so special. Sam was adored by his family. As a son, brother and nephew, he was loyal, funny and fiercely protective." Noting that his son was genuine during his time on the BBC show, Andrew added: "Race Across The World opened his eyes to the wonder of adventure and travel. He was willing to go wherever the trail might lead, and he touched everyone he met on the road. "He found great happiness working as a landscape gardener on the west coast of Scotland. Sam brought warmth, laughter and a smattering of chaos wherever he went. "He leaves behind a huge hole in our hearts. We will miss him endlessly, but we'll also remember him with smiles, tall tales, and a depth of love that will never fade." Following the devastating news, a Race Across the World spokesperson said: "Everyone who worked with him and indeed everyone who watched Sam could see just how precious and transformative the trip was for both him and his mum, Jo. "Sam threw himself into the seven-week trip with boundless enthusiasm, affection, and unwavering resolve, which led to him and his mum enjoying incredible adventures across Mexico and Argentina, captivating audiences with their unique bond and charm. "Since filming, both Sam and Jo have been an integral part of the Race Across the World cast family and on behalf of us all from the BBC, production and the rest of the cast, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to his parents, Andrew and Jo; his brothers, William and Charlie; his step mum Justine; his family and friends."
