Revival package to facilitate private takeover, not to save VSP from privatisation: CITU national secretary

The Hindu19-05-2025

Former MP and CITU national general secretary Tapan Kumar Sen on Monday (May 19) said the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre hatched a plan to privatise the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), four years ago with its 'disinvestment' announcement.
Mr. Sen was in the city to participate in various programmes, including a meeting with the leaders and activists of the RINL-VSP trade unions to lead a nationwide protest on May 20.
Addressing a press conference at the CITU office here, he said it is the right of every citizen, including the residents of Visakhapatnam, to fight for the protection of the plant for the sake of thousands of employees and their families, and the lakhs of people who indirectly depend on the plant for their livelihood.
On the ₹11,400 crore revival package announced by the Centre earlier this year, Mr. Sen said the Centre had announced the package to facilitate private takeover in the future, not to save it from privatisation, invest in its infrastructure or pay off pending salaries of employees. He pointed out that there was a hidden agenda behind the revival package.
The revival package is useless without the allocation of captive mines. Private steel companies in the country have their own mines and ore units, but the government did not think of arranging for these key facilities for the PSU. 'By buying raw materials from outside, Vizag Steel Plant spends ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 a tonne on ore, whereas if it is given its own mines, it costs only ₹600 a tonne,' Mr. Sen said.

Political storm erupts in Punjab after SAD leader Majithia's arrest: Opposition cries vendetta, AAP defends anti-drug drive

He further criticised the early morning raid at the MLA flat allotted to Majithia's wife and fellow legislator, Ganieve Kaur Majithia. 'No search warrant was brought, nor was she informed. The officials entered her bedroom and searched her almirahs. This is shameful and not the first time. Similar tactics were used against our party MLA Sukhpal Khaira. The Mann-led government's methods are immoral. Take action if needed, but follow due process,' he said. Bajwa also issued a caution to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, stating, 'Mann thinks he will rule Punjab for 25 years. But others who thought the same are now out of power. Follow the rule of law this is not jungle raj.' Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira also came out in support of Majithia, condemning the raid as politically motivated. 'Punjab has now turned into a police state,' he said in a Facebook video. Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal took to X to draw parallels with the Emergency, tweeting, '#EmergencyIndia1975 to till today in Punjab. Same things happening to shut the voices of opposition. Congress + AAP = INDI Alliance = One & the same! Political Vendetta!'

Op Sindhu update: 3,154 Indian nationals brought home from Iran, 4 Nepalese nationals evacuated

In a development under Operation Sindhu, a special flight carrying 296 Indian nationals and 4 Nepalese citizens arrived safely in New Delhi from Mashhad, Iran, at 4.30pm on 25 June 2025, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X. This latest evacuation brings the total number of Indian nationals repatriated from Iran to 3,154 since the operation began. Operation Sindhu was launched by the Indian government in response to escalating tensions and conflict in the region, particularly following recent military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian nuclear facilities. The strikes targeted key sites such as Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, intensifying fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East. Operation Sindhu was officially launched by the PM Narendra Modi-led India government on 18 June to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran amid escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. The first evacuation flight carrying 110 Indian students who had travelled by road to Armenia departed Yerevan on 18 June 2025 and arrived in New Delhi early on 19 June 2025. Since the onset of Operation Sindhu, multiple special flights and other modes of transport have been deployed to evacuate Indian nationals from various cities across Iran, including Tehran, Mashhad, and Isfahan. The evacuation has included vulnerable groups such as students, professionals, and tourists caught amid rising tensions. Nepalese nationals stranded in Iran have also been assisted as part of humanitarian cooperation between India and Nepal, reflecting regional solidarity in times of crisis. The evacuation efforts come in the wake of a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran, which began with Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites, including key nuclear facilities. The strikes, supported by the United States, aimed to degrade Iran's nuclear programme but reportedly only set it back by months rather than completely destroying it, according to initial US intelligence assessments. Both nations claimed victory following intense missile exchanges and drone attacks, which caused casualties on both sides. A ceasefire brokered by the United States and facilitated by Qatar took effect on 24 June 2025, bringing a temporary halt to hostilities. Israel lifted wartime restrictions, reopening airports and allowing citizens to resume normal activities, while Iran also signalled compliance with the truce. Despite some initial accusations of violations from both sides, the ceasefire has largely held, offering cautious optimism for peace. However, tensions remain high, with both nations wary of future escalations. The conflict has underscored the fragile security situation in the Middle East and the challenges involved in achieving lasting peace.
