Are teens taught enough life skills to know how to 'adult'?
Mai is a first-year medical student. She also doesn't know how to change a light bulb.
After her 18th birthday she moved out of her home in Shepparton, Victoria, to go to university in Armidale, New South Wales.
"The whole move out was a bit stressful," she says.
"I feel like I was a bit independent, but there was just this big sudden change where now I'm cooking for myself. I'm cleaning for myself. I am transporting myself everywhere. I'm flying on planes alone.
"I'm doing this, I'm doing that and they seem like small things, but once you add having to study on top of that, it just all becomes very overwhelming.
Mai was thrown in the deep end of the big wide world and quickly realised that while high school had prepared her for university, it hadn't taught her to "adult".
"It becomes this thing that we don't talk about and we just expect everyone to know," she says.
"Like, OK, I'm all good with the educational side of things, but I don't know how to apply for a Medicare card or I don't know how to check if my immunisations are up to date.
"Am I stupider than my friends because I don't know how to do this?
"That just kind of takes away part of your confidence."
Defining what it means to be an adult can be difficult.
You turn 18 and in the eyes of the law, hey presto, you're an adult.
But are there certain responsibilities or life skills that inherently qualify as "adulting"?
For 16-year-old Casey, who is in year 11, there are.
"Adulting to me is being able to provide for yourself and being able to provide for other people," she says.
"So being able to take on responsibility for your finances, for basic things in life, like knowing how to get a Medicare card, knowing how to buy a house, how to manage a car, all of those things.
Archer, who is 18, feels he should be well-equipped with these skills but suspects he is lacking.
"I'd like to think I'm mature, but I think adulting means managing finances and bills, something I don't really do," he says.
"I don't do any trades. I don't do much hands-on work. I never really liked it.
"I'm not going to leave my house anytime soon, like at all. I'm going to be studying at uni for probably five years and that's all going to go to my HECS debt.
"So I'm just going to be sitting in my house, you know, studying, working hard, of course, but I don't need to worry about [adulting] … and there's no reason for me to because it's not practical to leave my house."
When asked if she thought her peers were similarly lacking in skills, Casey said it was pretty split.
"I think it's pretty 50–50. I think there are some people who are dead set on track, know what they're going to do with life and some people who are like, 'Ah, I don't know what I'm doing!'
This apprehension towards "adulting" is a global affliction.
In Canada, a handful of universities have begun offering Adulting 101 classes, to fill in the blanks when it comes to life skills.
In these classes students learn things like budgeting, changing a car tyre, and applying for a home loan.
Across the ditch in New Zealand, a pair of high school students has started a petition to make life skills a compulsory subject.
In our neck of the woods, just 60 per cent of young Australians say their high school education prepared them for the future, while almost 70 per cent say they've taken some form of online classes in the past year, often to do with learning basic life skills.
Those results are from Monash University's 2024 Youth Barometer Survey. Some participants felt high school hadn't equipped them with basic life skills, and it could be hard to learn them on your own.
Teenagers Briar and Mai want to address this knowledge gap by starting a social media campaign called How To Adult.
"Basically, the idea of it is a very simplified social media campaign, more like a TikTok page or a YouTube channel, where we would upload these 30 to 60-second videos, just teaching people real skills," Mai says.
"So, it's just small things and the idea of it was that we wanted to get information on how to do these things from professionals."
Briar and Mai are winners of this year's Heywire competition, an annual storytelling contest run by the ABC across regional and remote Australia.
Briar, who is 17 and in year 12 in Wooroolin, near Kingaroy in Queensland, says having a resource like this will fix a problem she feels many young Australians face.
"We just have absolutely nothing to go off and we're solely relying on our parents and getting chucked in the deep end almost to try and figure stuff out," she says.
"You'd be surprised how many people have part-time jobs within school and have no idea how to save, what to spend, applying for anything government [related], so Medicare cards."
Mai says getting professionals to teach these skills via short videos will help young Australians grow in confidence and might even help them save a bit of cash.
"Mainly kind of budgeting, renting, even as small as how to change a light bulb, you know, or how to change your car tyre," she says.
"How do you apply for a working with children check? How do you check if you're up to date on your immunisations?
"You don't want to be paying dollars for, let's say, an electrician to just change a light bulb, or you don't want to go to a mechanic to change your tyre."
Both Briar and Mai agree that schools should be taking more responsibility for teaching young Australians life skills.
"Schools have always stood for, 'We're preparing you for the real world. We're learning this maths so you can do engineering'.
"But it's never as simple as how to change your car tyre, you know?"
Briar reckons she spends too much time on things that she says are unimportant.
"It's more Shakespeare and all that fun stuff," she says.
"We just really need to home in on what's important and what's valuable to get young people educated."
"I think schools definitely [are] … a very big part of who we are becoming," Mai says.
She acknowledges that parents have a role to play, but says their time is scant.
A spokesperson for the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, which is responsible for setting the Australian curriculum, says it includes content to support the development of crucial life skills such as financial literacy, food preparation and mental health and wellbeing, and sets out skills it wants all young people to develop.
Archer reckons parents should be the ones to teach their kids to "adult", but recognises not everyone is afforded this opportunity.
"I'd like to say it's your parents [who should teach their kids], because that's what they should be doing, and they've had experience firsthand doing all the adulting stuff," Archer says.
"But not everyone's parents are a reliable source … so, I think if we want to be equal, [it should be taught in] schools."

Animal shelters struggle with influx of surrendered pets, as owners face cost of living pressure
Bernadette Relos and husband, Nathan Calverley, are self-described animal lovers who live in a bustling house in Darwin's outskirts suburb of Berrimah. They have two cats and a one-year-old puppy, which they recently adopted from a shelter. The South Australian couple who moved to the Top End for work said their "fur babies" brought chaos and destruction, but much-needed colour to their lives. "They bring life to the household … you can be lonely, and one of the cats will jump on you, and then you're not lonely anymore," Mr Calverley said. "You could walk in the front door, and everyone doesn't say a word, but the dog will come running … and start licking you and saying hello." Ms Relos said they decided to adopt because they wanted pets that would grow up with their young family. But as some are choosing to bring furry friends into their forever homes, animal shelters are seeing the opposite. Charles Giliam, the Northern Territory's RSPCA operations manager, said there had been an increasing number of surrendered pets due to people experiencing financial difficulties. He said most pets being dropped on shelter doorsteps were mixed breeds, weighing around 20 to 30 kilograms, with backyard breeding worsening the situation. "[People] bring pets to us that are often in need of veterinary treatment … and say, 'We just don't have the money'," he said. The RSPCA estimates most dog owners spend an average of $25,000 on their pet during its lifetime, while cat owners spend $21,000 on average. The charity says that within the first year of cat ownership, people could face up to $3,500 of expenses on food, desexing, grooming, bedding, toys and treats. Mr Giliam said the influx of surrendered pets was creating significant challenges for shelters. "We probably got about 15 to 20 people on our waiting list who are wanting to surrender … but we are chock-a-block full," he said. RSPCA national data showed around 81,000 pets were surrendered in the 2023/2024 financial year, with only 27,000 finding new homes. David Neilson, a volunteer at the Darwin RSPCA shelter, said the increasing demand was leaving some volunteers "overwhelmed". "There are so many volunteers that are here through the week to walk the dogs and sit with the cats and we are not getting through everything … it makes it difficult," he said. While many in the rescue sector are worried about the growing crisis, there are also concerns the NT's animal rights laws are ineffective. Unlike most other Australian jurisdictions, the NT does not have a formal dog breeder licensing scheme, however breeders are still expected to meet standards of care under the Animal Protection Act. Melissa Purick, a licensed dachshund breeder, said it was "frustrating" to see people buy pets from unlicensed backyard breeders without considering the animal's welfare. "I would like to see that stopped to start with, where you can't sell puppies at the markets or the side of the road," she said. Hannah Bohlin, an animal advocate, believes growing use of social media is glamorising pet ownership without highlighting its challenges. She said if people adopted pets that were incompatible with their lifestyle, cost of living could become a "scapegoat" to surrender animals that were no longer valued. She wants the NT to look at what other states and countries are doing to manage pet breeding and ownership. "I would like to see a discussion around the possibility of introducing some kind of licence system [to own a pet]," she said. "Some European countries do operate this kind of system to get a dog in the first place."

Lamb almost starves to death after being locked in Mount Gambier skate park
A newborn lamb is recovering from almost starving to death after being locked in a Mount Gambier skate park by a council employee for two days. A statement from the City of Mount Gambier council said the lamb and two other larger lambs were found wandering close to traffic on Jubilee Highway East on Sunday and then locked inside the nearby Dimjalla skate park by a ranger that night. In a post on Facebook that she described as an open letter to the council, wildlife rescuer Julia Dangerfield said she noticed the male lamb in distress about 11am on Tuesday. She called the council to let them know the lamb, which still had its umbilical cord attached, was "hypothermic, non-responsive, and unable to move". A ranger came and let Ms Dangerfield look after the lamb, which she gave milk to and warmed up overnight at her house on Tuesday. She then passed it onto the Orphan Lamb Rescue Farm — an organisation that looks after orphaned and abandoned lambs in nearby Glencoe. In a video Ms Dangerfield posted online, the lamb can be seen writhing around on the ground. Warning: The following video contains images of the lamb in distress. Orphan Lamb Rescue Farm president and founder, Rebecca Alexander, said the lamb was less than a week old and appeared to be starving because it was not given any milk. She said it was likely having a fit because of a low blood-sugar level. "They tend to go downhill very quickly when they don't get regular milk at his age. "We're hoping that's all it is and that it hasn't done any internal damage." The temperature dipped down to 4 degrees Celsius overnight in Mount Gambier on Sunday night and 5C on Monday night. Ms Alexander said the lamb had started drinking milk from a bottle and standing up. "He looks really well," she said. "The wildlife carer's done a fantastic job." Unlike Ms Dangerfield, Ms Alexander was not critical of the council ranger's actions. "I guess it's something that the council doesn't deal with very often, and so they probably don't have any type of facilities to take the sheep in," Ms Alexander said. "I'm assuming they thought locking it in a skate park kept them safe and off the road. "I think the main thing that could have been done is hay and water put out immediately for them and then the little one be taken in because he was one that definitely needed milk." Ms Dangerfield called on the council to investigate the incident. The council said the welfare of animals was a priority "and we remain committed to acting swiftly when animals are in need". "We're pleased to report that all three lambs are currently safe and recovering," it said. "Council extends its sincere thanks to the community members who supported the animals during this time." The two larger lambs have been taken to a farm. A fourth lamb was found near the Mount Gambier showgrounds, also in the city's east, on Sunday. But Ms Alexander did not believe it was connected with the other three, since it was used to being fed by humans. "He's very, very friendly," she said. "He's used to the bottle. The dog doesn't scare him. So obviously he's been hand-raised already." Lambs raised by the Orphan Lamb Rescue Farm are only adopted out to people who plan to keep them as pets. None of the rescued lambs had ear tags.
