Local Man Held At KLIA For Attempting To Smuggle Four Gibbons
The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said in a statement today that the animals were found inside the 34-year-old suspect's luggage.
He was a passenger on a Batik Air flight bound for Mumbai, India, scheduled to depart Friday night.
'The suspect was detained on the spot and taken to the Aeropolis police headquarters for further action,' the statement said.
AKPS said the gibbons have been handed over to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) for investigation and further action.
The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 and the International Trade in Endangered Species Act 2008.
The arrest was part of enhanced integrated checks launched this month in collaboration with Aviation Security (AVSEC) and Perhilitan, targeting wildlife smuggling through high-risk aviation entry points.
'AKPS, AVSEC and Perhilitan will continue to tighten security controls at KLIA and will not compromise with any party involved in wildlife trafficking via air routes,' the statement added.

Solar street light project on East-West Highway to be completed by September
IPOH: A total of 385 solar-powered street lights, valued at RM3.32 million, are currently being installed along the East-West Highway (JRTB), which connects Gerik to Jeli, Kelantan. The project is expected to be completed by September this year. Perak Public Works Department director Ir Zamri Abu Kasim said nine contractors were appointed for the installation works, which began on June 23. On June 10, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the government allocated RM60 million in 2023 to implement various initiatives to enhance the Gerik–Jeli route, particularly along the FT04 federal road. He added that in August of the same year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM30 million allocation to further upgrade the route, including repairs to road furniture, bridges, street lights, and traffic lights. He said this in response to concerns raised over the condition of the FT04 route, where a fatal accident claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students on June 9.

Lecturer pleads not guilty to drug use charge
MELAKA: A public university lecturer pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh Magistrate's Court today to a charge of consuming dangerous drugs, namely amphetamine and methamphetamine, last month. Mohd Shahrizan Othman, 44, entered the plea after the charge was read to him by a court interpreter before Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman. According to the charge, he is accused of self-administering amphetamine and methamphetamine, both listed under Part III of the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, while at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Melaka Tengah District Police Headquarters at 5.20pm on June 19. He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a maximum jail term of two years or a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction. The court may also impose a supervision order of two to three years under Section 38B of the same Act. Deputy public prosecutor Syaza Nur Sharif conducted the prosecution, while the accused was represented by Muhammad Izzuddin Ab Malek from the National Legal Aid Foundation. In a mitigation plea, the defence counsel informed the court that the accused is a lecturer with an income of about RM7,000 and is currently on leave due to the ongoing court proceedings.

MACC detains 6 cops for alleged ketum juice cover-up bribe
TEMERLOH: Six policemen have been remanded for seven days to assist in an investigation involving an alleged RM12,000 bribe to cover up a ketum juice possession case. The suspects, aged between 30 and 50, were remanded until Aug 6 following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at the Temerloh magistrate's court today. They were detained at 9pm yesterday after turning up at the MACC's Temerloh branch office to give their statements.
