Calls to probe R131 million police sick leave bill
The South African Police Service (Saps) has been lambasted for spending more than R131 million on absent police officers.
According to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, the hefty amount has been spent on police members who have been on paid sick leave for more than six months during the 2023-24 financial year.
Criminologists said it was not a problem to look after the police, but said the matter should be investigated.
The staggering figure was revealed by Mchunu when responding to questions in parliament.
He conceded the total number of Saps employees – who were on paid sick leave for the period under review – was 618.
Prof Witness Maluleke, a senior criminologist from the University of Limpopo, said: 'The spent money is channelled to good use, as they are still police members until declared unfit and incapacitated.
'It is hoped that they will recover to add numbers to the already stretched Saps population. It should be noted that the Saps ratio to the citizens cannot be achieved and the mission of fighting crime remains an impossible mandate for the Saps.'
Extended leave
Crime investigator Chad Thomas said that it was concerning that some police members were on extended leave.
'For the sake of the physical and mental well-being of the members, it needs to be established which members should be medically boarded or not,' said Thomas.
Criminologist Willem Els said the situation was a problem within the police.
'According to regulations within the police, whenever you are on sick leave you have the benefit of going on sick leave as part of your service agreement,' said Els.
'But should your commander believe or have a hint that you are abusing the system, they are under the obligation to take you to the district surgeon.
'Then, the district surgeon will see you and will be asked to give a verdict to either confirm your medical condition, or to write a statement that you are actually not as sick as you claim to be.'

Misuse of public funds
DA deputy spokesperson on the police, Lisa-Maré Schickerling, said the expenditure was shocking and a misuse of public funds which demands urgent accountability.
'The DA demands that the minister of police launch an independent audit to investigate.'

Spearheaded by the Acting District Commissioner of Tshwane, Brigadier Moses Dladla, the operation was supported by members of SAPS and comprised different stakeholders. Home Affairs, TMPD, Gauteng Traffic Police, and Community Safety departments assisted. Van Dyk said the detectives were responsible for the arrest of over 200 suspects for different criminal offences. 'Several suspects were arrested for a variety of criminal offences, which include 251 arrests by detectives, 66 for gender-based violence-related offences, two for murder, five for attempted murder, three for armed robbery and five for rape.' He said about 31 undocumented foreign nationals were detained, and they are now being processed by immigration authorities. Van Dyk emphasised that the multidisciplinary operation saw thousands of people, and hundreds of vehicles searched. '[A total of] 1 210 people and 890 vehicles were searched, which led to the arrest of 18 persons for driving under the influence of alcohol, with 86 traffic infringement notices issued, amounting to R47 050,' he said. He stated that the weekend operation specifically targeted crime hotspot areas. 'The police patrolled and searched 33 crime hotspots, leading to the arrests of 10 suspects for public drinking, with one suspect arrested for drug possession when four bags containing various drugs and a ball of crystal meth were found in his possession,' said Van Dyk. Police inspected 33 liquor outlets, leading to the closure of six for non-compliance, and liquor and a gambling machine were confiscated and seized, with two arrests made for illegal gambling. Dladla commended the teamwork of all participating departments and highlighted the importance of community support. Another 8 undocumented immigrants meet their match in eMalahleni
Police officers deployed under Operation Vala Umgodi have arrested eight illegal immigrants during a stop-and-search operation along the N4 Road near a local mall on Thursday. Arrested on August 14, the suspects, aged between 22 and 34, allegedly failed to produce valid documentation allowing them to be in South Africa and were charged with Contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa. The arrests form part of a broader crackdown on illegal mining and related crimes across Mpumalanga. Operation Vala Umgodi, a multi-agency initiative led by the South African Police Service, has been actively targeting hotspots used by criminal syndicates and undocumented individuals. According to the Mpumalanga provincial Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the operation has already led to hundreds of arrests nationwide. The eight arrested are expected to appear before the Witbank Magistrate's Court today, August 18. 'Another 11 undocumented immigrants were arrested on August 7, and they appeared before the Witbank Magistrate's Court on August 11,' said Witbank Police Spokesperson, Captain Eddie Hall. Ekurhuleni crackdown sees mass arrests and crime prevention efforts
Law enforcement took to the streets of Edenvale when Operation Basadi arrived in town, leading to the arrest of over 300 suspects across Ekurhuleni. The operation brought together multiple stakeholders who followed up on leads, traced suspects, and worked to curb crime in the area. According to Ekurhuleni District communication officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the operation aimed to protect residents and ensure that offenders were brought to justice. It began on August 13 and concluded on August 14. These included 192 arrests for contact crimes, 18 for contact-related crimes, nine for property crimes, 54 for other serious crimes, and 37 for gender-based violence. In a separate effort, members of Crime Intelligence arrested a suspect for dealing in drugs. The following morning, Katlehong Police Station's station commander, Brigadier Albertina Vesi, led joint operations in Edenvale alongside other senior officers. The initiative included SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, security companies, and other local stakeholders. During the Edenvale operation, 43 illegal immigrants were detained, two suspects were arrested for drug possession, one was arrested for dealing in dagga, and another for possession of illicit cigarettes. A shebeen was closed for non-compliance, and two second-hand goods stores were fined for failing to comply with regulations. Vesi thanked all members and partners for their ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents in the district.
