'Marathon River Queen' Chelsea makes waves in Europe
PETALING JAYA: Having made Malaysian sporting history, open water swimmer Chelsea Ning Lee has set her sights on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The 21-year-old became the first swimmer in the world to complete the Marathon River Swim Series, an epic three-part challenge across Europe, after winning the final and most punishing leg, the 30km UltraEbre Swim Marathon in Spain, on July 4. The feat earned her the title of "Marathon River Queen", an honour bestowed upon those who successfully complete all three marquee open water events — the 33km Flow des Gabarriers in France, the 13km Thames Marathon in the United Kingdom, and the UltraEbre — within a five-year span. Chelsea did it in three. "I honestly didn't expect to win, just finishing the race was already a big achievement for me," said Chelsea. "I mean, no sane person wakes up on a Sunday thinking, 'Let's go swim 30km!' So to cross the line first was just an added bonus." The series was created to unite the global open water community through a shared celebration of endurance, camaraderie and nature. It also represents a unique sporting trifecta — from the scenic Charente River in the Cognac region of France, to the bustling stretch of the River Thames in the UK, and finally, the expansive Ebro River winding through Catalonia, Spain. Chelsea completed the Flow des Gabarriers in 2023, followed by the Thames Marathon last year, before capping her journey with a triumphant performance at the UltraEbre. Along the way, she raced alongside swimmers from Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and beyond — building international friendships and proving she could match the best. Her efforts are all the more commendable given that open water swimming remains a niche discipline in Malaysia, with little in the way of mainstream exposure or structured development. But Chelsea is determined to change that narrative. Now, she has turned her focus towards a new goal — qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where the 10km marathon swim is contested. "What started as just me watching the Olympics on TV has now become my dream, to compete in LA2028," said Chelsea. "I may not know exactly where to begin, but I know one thing, I'm not backing down. All hard work pays off eventually, and that's all that matters." While she is still navigating the demands of university life, Chelsea is already eyeing her next big test — an ultra-distance swim in Norway next year, expected to be the coldest she has ever faced. And beyond that, perhaps one day, the English Channel. "I want to inspire more Malaysians to embrace the spirit of open water," she said.

Immigration FC Eye Darul Aman Stadium As Super League Home Ground
ALOR SETAR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Immigration FC (IFC) aim to make Darul Aman Stadium here their home ground for the 2025/2026 Super League season. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the team, which is under the Home Ministry, has sent a letter to the Kedah State Stadium Corporation for that purpose. 'But while waiting for a reply, we have to make preparations first. So for now, Batu Kawan Stadium in Penang will serve as IFC's home ground. bootstrap slideshow 'In addition, the Dato' Sheikh Ahmad Stadium (Kangar), which is undergoing renovation, will also be considered once the work is completed in two or three months,' he said. He was speaking to reporters at the unveiling of IFC's jersey and player line-up for the 2025/2026 Super League season here last night. Saifuddin Nasution said that as newcomers to the Super League, IFC, also known as the Mighty Tigers, hope to use Darul Aman Stadium as their home ground as it is seen as the best choice. 'We plan to lease Darul Aman Stadium for one season, which will generate good revenue for the stadium. It also won't clash with A1 League matches, which are played in the evening, while Super League matches are held at night,' he said. He added that IFC chose to base itself in Kedah or Perlis to give fans in the northern region an opportunity to watch Super League matches since no teams from either state will be competing in the league this season. 'So IFC offers an option for the northern region. If they want to see a team like JDT play up north, the best opportunity is when they play an away match against IFC. But fans will also have a second option of watching teams competing in the A1 League,' he said.

Immigration FC eyes Darulaman Stadium as Super League home
ALOR STAR: Immigration FC (IFC) is eyeing the iconic Darulaman Stadium as its home ground for the upcoming Super League season in a bid to bring top-tier football closer to fans in the northern region. The team, which falls under the Home Ministry's purview, will be based in the north to offer supporters in Kedah and Perlis the opportunity to back a Super League side on home turf, said Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Saifuddin said IFC, one of two teams under the ministry set to feature in the Super League next season, began intensive training in July, with Kedah chosen as the team's preparation base. "There are already many teams in the Klang Valley. But in the north, Perlis and Kedah — once dominant forces in Malaysian football — are no longer in the Super League. That's why we're stationing IFC here," he said during a press conference at the Raia Hotel and Convention Centre yesterday. "This gives northern football fans a new option, a Super League team they can follow much closer to them." For now, IFC will play home matches at Batu Kawan Stadium in Penang, pending approval to use Darulaman Stadium. The team will train at the Muda Agriculture Development Authority (Mada) headquarters stadium in Alor Star. Saifuddin said the Datuk Sheikh Ahmad Stadium in Arau is also being considered once upgrade works are completed in the coming months. "We've submitted our application and are waiting for a response... The best is if we can get Darulaman, we plan to lease the stadium for a whole season," he said. "This is good income for the stadium as Super League matches are played at night, while A1 League matches are held in the afternoon, so there should be no scheduling conflicts." Darulaman Stadium is currently the home ground of the Kedah Football Association (KFA), which competes in the A1 Semi-Pro League. On IFC's prospects, Saifuddin expressed confidence that the squad, comprising seasoned local players and international imports, could be competitive in its debut season. He said he told the head coach, Yusri Che Lah, to focus on building the team and not worry about lofty goals. "Of course, I whispered, 'Top four.' He replied, 'Let's aim for top five,'" he quipped. Saifuddin added that several corporate sponsors had also come on board with strong support for the team this season.
