Phil Salt's bat deemed legal after initially failing 'gauge test' in IPL

England white-ball opener Phil Salt's bat, which he used in the last two years including in the Indian Premier League, was initially deemed "to have failed an on-field gauge test" but later cleared after further examination, his club said.
The 28-year-old Salt currently plays for Lancashire. He played a major role in Royal Challenger Bengaluru's maiden IPL title win earlier in the year, scoring 403 runs from 13 matches, the second highest for his team after Virat Kohli (657 from 15 matches).
Lancashire Cricket in a statement said that the bat used by Salt during Friday's Vitality Blast T20 match against Northants Steelbacks has been cleared by the Cricket Regulator's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).
"Salt was alleged to have breached ECB Directives 3.2 and 3.3, after his bat failed an on-field bat-gauge test during the Vitality Blast fixture. It is a bat that he has used for the last two years for England, Lancashire and in the IPL with no issue," the club said in the statement.
During the first over of Lancashire Lightning's run chase, an umpire conducted an on-field bat gauge test, as part of an assurance process undertaken to check the sizes of a bat being used. To pass the test, the bat must fit through a gauge of the specified size.
"Salt's bat did not pass through the gauge on the field and was therefore deemed to have failed the test, and in further tests carried out after the match, it was deemed inconclusive despite the bat fitting through the gauge on several occasions.
"The Club and player felt this should have been the end of the matter, but the officials felt it necessary for the bat to be taken away for further testing," the club said.
"Following this evidential testing process undertaken by the Cricket Regulator, the bat was found to be compliant with the Regulations - and the Club and player have been informed that no further action will be taken." The club said the "whole process could have been avoided with improved processes on and off the field, whether that be through better equipment and/or additional training".
"Following the incident there have been inappropriate comments made by match commentators, inaccurate articles written in the media and some unsavoury social media posts towards the player, that could have been avoided." Cricket Regulator, the body established by the ECB and responsible for monitoring and enforcing the game's regulations, said Salt's bat was subject to an on-field test and it did not pass the initial test during the July 4 match between Northamptonshire and Lancashire.
"Following standard practice the bat was then subject to a post-match test, the results of which were inconclusive," it said.
"On 7th July, the Cricket Regulator investigated the matter and found the bat to be compliant with the regulations. Accordingly no further action will be taken against the player or Lancashire in this matter." Salt has so far played 33 ODIs after making debut in 2021, scoring 988 runs at an average of 31.87 with one hundred. He has featured in 43 T20Is from which he has scored 1193 runs with three centuries at an average of 34.08 and strike rate of 164.32.

India's Squad For Asia Cup: 3 Big Stars To Be Snubbed, Report Says No Yashasvi Jaiswal And...

The Asia Cup will be the Indian cricket team's next big assignment after a memorable England Tour. According to a report by news agency PTI, the Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee is likely to select the squad for the Asia Cup on August 19 or 20 depending on when the Centre of Excellence's (CoE) Sports Science team sends the medical bulletin of all players, including that of skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who has already started batting at the nets in Bengaluru.. The report further said the BCCI selection committee won't be too keen to tinker with the set-up as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya form a solid top five. "Abhishek Sharma is world's No. 1 T20 batter in last ICC rankings. Sanju Samson has been fantastic last season with both bat and gloves. So it will certainly be a tough call but Shubman in current form (although in Tests) can't be ignored. He had a good IPL also. Problem for selectors is, there are too many performers at the top of the order," a BCCI source privy to developments told PTI. With so many players in top-order, it would be very difficult to find a slot for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. Even KL Rahul, who is now the first choice keeper in ODIs, is unlikely to be considered as he doesn't bat in the middle-order. Second keeper's slot While Samson is all but certain to be the first keeper, the choice for the second keeper's slot will be between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. While Jurel was a part of the last T20 series, Jitesh had been impressive for RCB during their IPL winning campaign. He has also revelled in the role of a finisher. Reddy unlikely to be fit in time While Hardik Pandya remains India's first choice white ball seam bowling all-rounder, Nitish Kumar Reddy, who suffered injury during the England series, is unlikely to get fit in time. Shivam Dube, who made a good comeback against England, is likely to find his place in the squad. Axar and Washington Sundar are set to be the other two spin-bowling all-rounders in the squad. The main bone of contention will be the seam-bowling attack where Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh have locked their slots. The third slot is a fight between Prasidh Krishna, who has 25 wickets in last IPL, and the burly Harshit Rana, who has ability to bowl some really heavy deliveries. Likely contenders: Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Verma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Hardik Pandya, Jitesh Sharma/Dhruv Jurel.

BCCI grooms Vaibhav Suryavanshi in special programme to fill looming vacuum amid Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma exit buzz

Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been a busy kid all summer. Since bursting onto the scene with his spectacular IPL performance earlier this year, the 14-year-old has carried his sublime form across formats during India's recent U-19 tour of England. Upon returning home, he attended a special training session with the Rajasthan Royals before receiving a call from the BCCI, which led him straight to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru on August 10. BCCI has begun grooming Vaibhav Suryavanshi to fill looming void in senior team(Action Images via Reuters) According to a MyKhel report, Vaibhav will undergo a special training program designed by the BCCI, focusing on both technical drills and match-specific scenarios. His childhood coach, Manish Ojha, explained that the BCCI is already preparing the youngster to fill the void left by retiring senior cricketers and that this training goes beyond just the upcoming Australia challenge. "BCCI is looking ahead. The senior players are gradually retiring, and to fill that vacuum, the next batch of youngsters must be fully ready. This training for Vaibhav is part of that process. We pick boys one by one and prepare them accordingly for the demands of international cricket," he said. This development around Vaibhav comes amid ongoing speculation about the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. While a Dainik Jagran report hinted that the upcoming Australia tour could mark their final international appearances—with their ODI careers and chances in the 2027 World Cup hinging on their domestic form—a BCCI official told PTI that the board is currently focused on the Asia Cup and preparations for next year's T20 World Cup and would never make such a significant decision hastily. Vaibhav's Bengaluru stint is expected to last only a week before he rejoins the India U-19 camp for the next assignment. Ojha added that the batter's next goal is to bring consistency to his scores in longer formats. 'He has the ability to attack from the very first ball, which is a huge positive in T20s and one-dayers. You've seen it in the IPL, U-19, and Vijay Hazare Trophy. But in longer formats, his performance level drops compared to white-ball cricket. The aim is to raise that consistency—if he plays 10 innings, 7-8 should be impactful,' he said.

I had already asked for....': R Ashwin adds twist to Sanju Samson's CSK and RR IPL trade news

I had already asked for....': R Ashwin adds twist to Sanju Samson's CSK and RR IPL trade news New Delhi: Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Monday took to his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat' to react to rumours that he and Sanju Samson might swap teams for the IPL 2026 season. Media reports claimed that Samson has sought a release or trade from Rajasthan Royals (RR), while Ashwin might leave Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Reports also said that CSK is showing interest in picking up Samson, which fuelled the buzz around this potential swap. Contract and renewal process Ashwin explained that after every IPL season, the franchise sends emails to the players, containing a review of their performance, expectations for the next season, and the option to renew the contract. Players can express their wish at this time whether they want to stay with the franchise or not. According to Ashwin, he had just sought 'clarity' after the season ended. 'The rumours don't come from the player, but from here and there or from the franchise,' he said. Price difference and possibility of trade On a possible swap with Samson, Ashwin said that there is a big difference between his and Samson's contracts—he is worth ₹9.5 crore in CSK, while Samson is worth ₹18 crore in RR. He said that if CSK wants to take Samson, then either the amount of ₹18 crore will have to be kept vacant or a direct trade with RR will have to be done. Trade is also possible through a cash deal. However, he clearly said that he has no inside information in this matter and the decisions are taken by the franchise owners. Will he remain in the team or not? Ashwin said that only the RR owners or Samson can confirm whether the trade will happen or not. He also admitted that if the player does not want to stay in the team, he cannot be stopped. On his situation, he said, 'Last year I played only 9 matches, which was a first for me. I had asked for clarity about my role but have not received an answer yet.' He also added that if he is not in the CSK team next season, it could also be beneficial for the team.
