The North Wales beauty spots that leave Hollywood swooning
And North Wales has landed one of the biggest shows with the Game of Thrones prequel, House of Dragons. HBO took a new tack for their House of the Dragon series, shifting base from Northern Ireland to Warner Bros Leavesden Studios in England.
However, they've captured several exterior scenes across Wales, Cornwall, Devon, and European locations such as Spain and Portugal.
Northwest Wales was prominently featured in the second season, with eight locations utilised. Half of these were situated on Anglesey, including Beaumaris and Porth-y-Cŵch.
Llanddwyn Beach, located near the village of Newborough, was a popular filming spot and is believed to have served as the backdrop for parts of Dragonstone.
Excitingly for Welsh fans, the breathtaking landscapes of North Wales are slated to play a pivotal role in Season 3. The region's rugged mountains, dramatic coastline, and historic castles provide the ideal dramatic scenery for the fantasy series.
The series delves into the history of House Targaryen, chronicling their struggle for the Iron Throne 200 years prior to the events depicted in the smash hit Game of Thrones series, which concluded in 2019.
Game of Thrones has consistently been a significant catalyst for screen tourism, and Visit Wales is undoubtedly anticipating the third season of House of Dragons, will continue to attract fans to the enchanting filming locations.
The well-liked Netflix Witcher series has also utilised numerous Welsh locations for filming, chiefly in Eryri National Park and along the Gower Peninsula in South Wales.
Specific sites include Llyn Padarn, Zip World, Dolbadarn Castle, and the National Slate Museum in Snowdonia, as well as Nash Point and Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower Peninsula.
In September 2024, film crews descended upon the village of Llanberis at the base of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) for the third series of The Witcher.
The village underwent a transformation, with artificial boulders and a "fake" forest assembled in the Gwynedd village and black screens erected at Y Glyn, a popular beauty spot more commonly known as The Lagoons.
Wales has also benefitted massively as a whole. A recent study shows that Netflix has poured over £200 million into the UK's economy since 2020, through its focus on Welsh film and TV projects. The streaming powerhouse has produced hit series like Sex Education, The Crown, and The Witcher in Wales, branding it a prime filming location.
Anna Mallet, Netflix's VP of Production for the UK, commented: "Blessed with incredible creative talent and beautiful natural landscapes, Wales is an amazing place to make entertainment, so Netflix is delighted that our Welsh productions can continue to create such enduring cultural and economic opportunities."
Netflix is set to enhance its presence with their latest project, the biggest feature film ever entirely shot in Wales.
The new Tom Hardy flick, Havoc, portrays a botched transaction and the subsequent rescue mission from a dark criminal network to save a politician's alienated offspring. While the critics have branded the film as "insanely violent" and "relentlessly brutal," commendations were high for its action-packed sequences filmed across Welsh locales, reports Wales Online.
In recent years, screen tourism, or 'set-jetting', has become one of the most dynamic sectors within the travel industry, with Wales well-placed to benefit from this burgeoning demand.
Seren Welch, a Screen Tourism Specialist, commented on the trend's impact: "This is an area of tourism that's seen exponential growth in the last ten years."
Supporting evidence comes from Expedia's 2023 trends research, which revealed that 40% of trips booked through their platform were influenced by film or television content.
Streaming giants like Netflix have played a pivotal role in driving this trend. Their worldwide audience has been introduced to stunning landscapes and historical sites, fuelling curiosity and prompting visits to these filming locations.
Welch pointed out Netflix's 2022 findings: "Their subscribers were 2.4 times more likely to put a destination at the top of their travel list after seeing it in a show... something a tourist board can only dream of."
She further noted, "Platforms can even track destination search spikes exactly when a new show drops...as seen with Emily in Paris and Bridgerton."
The link between on-screen storytelling and real-world discovery underscores the allure of enchanting filming locations, many of which are found throughout Wales.
Other stories filmed in Wales include the BBC's much-loved series Gavin and Stacey, with the emotional Christmas Day finale becoming one of the most viewed scripted TV programmes of the century, attracting over 19 million viewers. Barry Island was one of the show's primary locations, and it's difficult to find a scene without it!
Since 2004, the producers of the popular science-fiction drama Doctor Who have made Wales the show's home. The country has hosted multiple Time Lords, Daleks, and a myriad of other monsters.
Doctor Who has become so intertwined with Wales due to its extensive filming across the country, especially in Cardiff, Newport, and other locales, that Bad Wolf Studios in Cardiff acts as the show's main studio hub.
The Batman film The Dark Knight Rises also featured a breathtaking waterfall in the Brecon Beacons, for exterior shots of Batman's clandestine hideout, the Batcave.
During a BAFTA Cymru event before the show's premiere on 25 May, BBC Wales head Rhuanedd Richards expressed her joy over Death Valley being set in her native Mountain Ash.
Even though Death Valley is set in the Cynon Valley, the majority of the series was filmed in various locations across South Wales.
For over a decade, the Casualty production team has used Cardiff as the setting for countless dramatic and heart-wrenching storylines on the BBC's long-standing medical drama.
The show is primarily filmed at BBC Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff Bay, which also houses the set for the Welsh-language soap opera Pobl y Cwm.
Despite Casualty being set in the fictional Holby City Hospital, elements of Welsh culture and identity are often woven into the narrative by the writers and producers. The show has successfully showcased the diversity of Wales to a national audience.
And the Young Sherlock production team shot scenes at several locations in Monmouth, telling the origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's iconic detective.
The town centre was transformed with extras donned in Victorian attire and temporary shopfronts to create a genuine period backdrop, complete with stacks of fruit and veg outside a greengrocer's façade.
Filming locations included the Shire Hall, the Punch House pub, and the Oxford Coffee Shop. An employee from the Punch House revealed that extras were dressed and made-up inside the pub.

‘Utterly brilliant' period drama with 86% Rotten Tomatoes score
Emma: Anya Taylor-Joy stars in trailer for 2020 film An underappreciated drama featuring Anya Taylor-Joy is set to air on UK television tonight (July 23) at no cost. The 29-year-old Argentinian actress, who grew up in the UK, has rapidly become one of the most sought-after film stars of her generation. Her breakthrough role came in 2015 with the gothic horror film The Witch, and she further cemented her status as a horror icon with performances in Split and its sequel, Glass. Eager to demonstrate her versatility, Taylor-Joy delivered critically acclaimed performances in the dark comedy Thoroughbreds and the hit BBC series Peaky Blinders. However, it was her portrayal of Beth Harmon in Netflix's The Queen's Gambit that truly propelled her to stardom, earning her a Golden Globe for the chess-themed drama, reports the Manchester Evening News. Anya Taylor-Joy stars in an underrated Jane Austen adaptation (Image: Focus Features) In recent years, she's appeared in Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho, the Viking epic The Northman, and alongside Ralph Fiennes in The Menu. After achieving box office success with The Super Mario Bros. Movie and leading Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Taylor-Joy is currently involved in the third Dune film. As her star continues to rise with each project, it's worth revisiting a film that often gets overlooked in discussions of her work. Based on the iconic Jane Austen novel of the same name, the 2020 period drama Emma features Taylor-Joy in the role of Miss Emma Woodhouse. For those unfamiliar with the plot, Emma follows the life of a wealthy and elegant young woman living with her father in Regency-era England. The drama also features acclaimed actor Bill Nighy (Image: Dumfries and Galloway Standard) The film Emma, which sees the titular character amusing herself by playing matchmaker and meddling in others' love lives, stands out as one of the finest renditions of Jane Austen's revered novels. Joining the ensemble is Johnny Flynn from The Dig, Josh O'Connor of Challengers fame, Dua Lipa's other half Callum Turner, Mia Goth from Pearl, Miranda Hart known for Call the Midwife, and Bill Nighy of Love Actually fame. Helmed by Autumn de Wilde making her directorial debut, Emma charmed critics upon release, securing an impressive 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 257 reviews. The critical consensus on the site states: "Other adaptations may do a better job of consistently capturing the spirit of the classic source material, but Jane Austen fans should still find a solid match in this Emma." Meanwhile a casual moviegoer dubbed the film as "utterly brilliant." Emma airs on Wednesday, July 23, at 11pm on BBC Two and on the BBC iPlayer.

Scream queen Jenna, who rose to fame in slashers Scream, X and Scream VI, was embroiled in controversy in recent months for comments she made during a podcast interview. She said she spent her time on the show 'changing lines' and 'had to put my foot down' because 'everything I had to play did not make sense for the character'. Jenna said she felt terrible about this and never meant it that way, simply meaning to say she improvised a lot and was permitted to. Tim sympathised with her, feeling the comments had been interpreted in a way she had not meant. But the pair revealed that after these events, Jenna is now a producer on the show. Co-creator Alfred Gough - who made the show with Miles Millar - said this made sense, as she is already so involved in every part of the show, as well as giving notes on the script, in a way he praised. Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria, meanwhile, added: 'There's a lot to explore in the Addams Family.' New cast member Joanna Lumley previously told Netflix news site Tudum: 'There's always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton. 'His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they've created here for Wednesday and Nevermore and the family is just intoxicating. 'It's wonderful. I get to wear many, many huge wigs, one on top of the other — and lots of quite constraining clothes, so I love it.' It comes after all Netflix fans had the same complaint as the streaming giant confirmed the release date of the much-anticipated second series of Wednesday. Bosses finally shared a major update with fans earlier this month after they patiently waited for the long-awaited date new episodes will drop. But in a major shakeup, Netflix revealed the series will be split into two parts. It comes after all Netflix fans had the same complaint as the streaming giant confirmed the release date of the much-anticipated second series of Wednesday (pictured) In a major shakeup, Netflix revealed the series (pictured, starring Billie Piper) will be split into two parts In a social media post alongside a first look trailer, they said part one will be available to stream from August 6 - which is also a Wednesday. While fans flooded their replies with excited comments, they were united on their take on the decision to split the release of the new episodes into two parts. One viewer said: 'Why must you break all the seasons in parts, Netflix? WHY?' A second chimed in: 'Interesting they're splitting the season. Wonder if this signals a tonal shift or just Netflix maximizing engagement?' 'Part 1 part 3 part 2 … Yall goofy just release the show together,' said a third. While a fourth penned: 'Season X part 1... that's stupid for any show you wait more than a year. Stop splitting seasons.' Netflix have confirmed part two will be available to stream on September 3. Wednesday is available to stream exclusively on Netflix.

Billy Joel says he's 'spent life looking' for dad who knocked him unconscious at age 8 and abandoned the family
Billy Joel says he's 'spent life looking' for dad who knocked him unconscious at age 8 and abandoned the family Have YOU got a story? Email tips@ Billy Joel's biggest revelation after filming his new documentary was uncovering the truth that his absentee father Howard Joel was a driving force behind his music and life. In the HBO film Billy Joel: And So It Goes, the 76-year-old Grammy winner lays bare a life marked by turmoil — from a rocky start to his marriage with Elizabeth Weber, once married to his bandmate Jon Small, to battles with addiction and, now, a relentless brain disorder that's forced him to cancel concerts. But it's his father's shadow that looms largest. In the documentary, Joel recalls Howard 'knocking me out' at age 8 over a piano mistake and eventually abandoning the family to move to Europe. Although they would later reconnect, Joel reflected in a new interview that searching for his father remained a driving force throughout his life. '[Co-director] Susan Lacy pointed out that a lot of the things I was searching for were my father in my life, and I recognized that in the documentary,' Joel told People on Wednesday. Billy Joel 's biggest revelation after filming his new documentary was uncovering the truth that his absentee father Howard Joel was a driving force behind his music and life; (seen in 2024) In the documentary, Joel recalls Howard 'knocking me out' at age 8 over a piano mistake before eventually leaving the family for Europe, and says that even after they reconnected, searching for his father remained a driving force in his life; (Joel with father Howard Joel in 1986) 'I said, "You know what? I think that's true. I was looking for my dad."' Billy's father Howard (born Helmut), who died in 2011 at age 87, hailed from a Jewish family in Nuremberg, Germany. As the son of a successful merchant and manufacturer, Howard grew up in a privileged environment and was educated in Switzerland. In addition to his business career, he was a skilled amateur classical pianist, a talent that likely influenced Billy's early interest in music. In 1957, Howard divorced Billy's mother Rosalind and returned to Europe, choosing to settle in Vienna, Austria. The separation meant that Billy and his sister grew up largely without a close relationship with his father. Though they eventually reconnected when Billy was in his early twenties, the years apart left a lasting impact. During his life in Vienna, Howard remarried and had another son, Alexander Joel, who carved out his own path as a pianist and conductor. '[Co-director] Susan Lacy pointed out that a lot of the things I was searching for were my father in my life, and I recognized that in the documentary,' Joel said;; (seen in 1986) 'One thing I remember, I was supposed to be playing the 'Moonlight Sonata,'" Billy said in the documentary, 'Must have been about eight years old. And rock & roll was around at that point 'He came down the stairs. Bam! I got whacked And I got whacked so hard, he knocked me out. I was unconscious for like a minute' Billy Joel acknowledged that his 1977 song Vienna' was about his father during the People interview. He added of making the documentary, 'There was some stuff I found out about myself. There was some self-revelatory stuff.' In the film, Joel opened up about his father in deeper detail, recalling a moment from childhood when he was punished for making a mistake on the piano. 'One thing I remember, I was supposed to be playing the 'Moonlight Sonata,'" Billy said. 'Must have been about eight years old. And rock & roll was around at that point.' 'He came down the stairs. Bam! I got whacked,' Billy continued. 'And I got whacked so hard, he knocked me out. I was unconscious for like a minute. 'And I remember waking up going, 'Well, that got his attention.' And that was my memory of his piano lessons. So, he didn't teach me much.' The interview follows an emotional health update from Billy Joel, who recently revealed he's battling a brain condition known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Back in May, the 76-year-old music icon announced his diagnosis and canceled several upcoming concerts after struggling during recent live performances. In May, music icon Joel, 76, revealed his diagnosis and announced the cancellation of his upcoming concerts, following recent onstage struggles - Joel seen performing in February 2025 The condition has affected his hearing, vision, and balance — symptoms he opened up about on Monday's episode of Bill Maher's Club Random podcast. 'I feel fine. My balance sucks. It's like being a boat,' Joel said, noting that doctors still aren't sure what's causing the disorder. 'They don't know… I thought it must be from drinking.' Over the years, Joel has spoken openly about his past struggles with alcohol, substance abuse, and mental health — including a suicide attempt brought on by intense career pressure. 'I feel good. They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling,' he said. According to the Mayo Clinic, hydrocephalus is the buildup of fluid in the brain that enlarges the ventricles and puts pressure on brain tissue, potentially leading to neurological damage. Joel is currently undergoing targeted physical therapy and has been advised by his doctors to hold off on performing during his recovery.
