Thug Life row: Karnataka to ensure screening as per SC order, says Shivakumar; appeals to activists for restraint

Time of India7 hours ago

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K
Shivakumar
on Tuesday appealed to Kannada activists to abide by the Supreme Court order, which directed the state government to ensure the screening of the Kamal Haasan-starrer movie 'Thug Life'.
Kannada activists have been up in tahe arms against the screening of the movie after the 70-year-old actor's comments about Kannada language sparked a major controversy.
They staged protests, lodged police complaint and warned film theatres not to screen the movie, alleging that Haasan insulted Kannada without knowing its rich history.

The court said mob and vigilantes cannot be allowed to take over streets.
Reacting to the court order, Shivakumar said, "We have to abide by the Supreme Court order with honour. Everyone has limitations. I appeal to various organisations that we must have our limitations."
"I appeal to all the Kannada activists, please be calm, we should respect the court. No one should take law into their hands," he said.
The Deputy CM underlined that Karnataka has always been a peace loving state.
Noting that there is nothing wrong in expressing opinion, Shivakumar said the state government too gave activists a chance to express their views.
He appealed to the people of Bengaluru to be generous.
"We have accommodated all the castes, languages and culture in Bengaluru. This is an international city. The people of Karnataka have always been large hearted," he underlined.
He also pointed out that no one can spoil the self-esteem of Kannada and the state government is also in favour of it but one has to honour the court.
'Thug Life' released in cinema halls across the country on June 5.

Delays in Goa road projects could cost Centre crores

Panaji: Over the past few years, bridge and road projects worth over Rs 14,000 crore have been funded by the Union ministry of road transport and highways in Goa. However, some of these infrastructure projects could soon cause losses to the ministry running into hundreds of crores. Contractors of three major projects have already gone in for arbitration in three separate cases, claiming that losses of Rs 300 to Rs 500 crore each have been caused to them due to delay in the projects, sources said. The contractors have said that the delays in the project execution occurred because Goa govt was unable to complete land acquisition for the road or bridge works within the required time. 'Three separate cases are already in the process of arbitration for road and bridge stretches in Cortalim, Mormugao, and Salcete. A fourth contractor is also in the process of taking the same route for work carried out in Pernem. The contractors have said that delays in land acquisition and changes to scope of work caused due to protests have caused them losses of around Rs 400 crore each,' said the source. The contractors have said that their machinery lying idle due to the delay in the works are some of the causes for the losses to them. 'Three of the cases are in advanced stages of arbitration, and if the matter does not go in favour of the govt, then the ministry in two of the cases and Goa govt in one of the cases will have to pay a heavy amount in settlement,' said the source. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Don't Bother With An Expensive Will (Do This Instead) Local Will Finder Undo The Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996, allows for a streamlined system for resolving disputes outside of traditional court proceedings. 'The Act recognizes the parties' autonomy to determine the procedure for arbitration and conciliation. They agree on the terms and conditions of their dispute resolution process. Each party appoints their own arbitrator and there is a chief arbitrator, who could be a retired judge, etc,' said a source. He said that although govt has placed its say that the Covid pandemic and other factors outside its control were also causes for the delay, usually these cases do end in the party having to cough up a settlement amount as per the arbitral award. 'As three of the four projects that have gone for arbitration were tendered by the ministry, the ministry will become liable to pay the amount as per the award,' said the source.

EU not offering fair trade deal, Japan is also acting tough: Donald Trump

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had stayed at the G7 meeting in Canada, and suggested Japan was being "tough" in trade talks and the European Union had not yet offered what he considered a fair deal. Trump left the Group of Seven meeting early to deal with developments in West Asia from the White House. Speaking to reporters on the trip back on Air Force One, the president said the 27-nation EU had been tough over the years with the United States. "We're talking, but I don't feel that they're offering a fair deal yet," Trump said. "They're either going to make a good deal or they'll just pay whatever we say they have to pay." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bangladesh: Unsold Sofas at Bargain Prices (View Current Prices) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo Trump also said there was a chance of a trade deal between Washington and Japan. "They're tough, the Japanese are tough, but ultimately you have to understand we're just going to send a letter saying 'this is what you're going to pay, otherwise you don't have to do business with us'. But there's a chance," he said. Live Events Trump also said pharmaceutical tariffs were coming very soon. "We're going to be doing pharmaceuticals very soon. That's going to bring all the companies back into America," he said. "It's going to bring most of them back into, at least partially back in." When Deepika Padukone asked Salman Khan to marry her: 'Mujhe aapse shaadi karni hai'

In 2015, Deepika Padukone surprised Salman Khan by proposing marriage on a reality show, saying, 'Mujhe aapse shaadi karni hai.' Salman politely declined, stating it wasn't possible but found it amusing. Deepika now stars in a Telugu action film, while Salman prepares for a war drama on the Galwan Valley clash. Salman Khan remains one of Bollywood's most sought-after bachelors, despite repeatedly stating he has no plans to marry. However, marriage proposals keep coming his way. Interestingly, actress Deepika Padukone once surprised everyone by proposing to the superstar herself. In 2015, while promoting her film 'Tamasha' on a reality show set, the actress unexpectedly knelt down and asked Salman to marry her during their conversation. Dressed in a striking blue polka-dot shirt and trousers, Deepika surprised Khan during their conversation by suddenly dropping to one knee and proposing marriage. She asked, 'Mujhe aapse shaadi karni hai. Will you marry me Mr. Salman Khan?' Salman, taken aback at first, soon laughed and even blushed upon hearing her unexpected proposal. Salman's polite decline and humorous exchange Salman turned down the actress's proposal, stating, 'Deepika ho ya koi bhi ho, ye nahi ho sakta,' and laughed afterward. He later remarked, 'Not a bad idea,' acknowledging that Deepika had caught him off guard with her surprise. Deepika later said, 'Gadho kya karwa rahe ho mujhse. Jo milna tha milgaya". On the work front, Deepika has now teamed up with Atlee Kumar and Allu Arjun for their upcoming epic Telugu action film, 'AA26x A6'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo On the other hand, Salman Khan's recent film, 'Sikandar', directed by AR Murugadoss, failed to impress at the box office.
