A Hutterite chicken butcher covered in blood … Tim Smith's best photograph

The Hutterites are an Anabaptist movement – they believe in adult baptism and pacifism. Like the Mennonites and the Amish, they emerged from the Radical Reformation in central Europe in the 1500s, but unlike them they live communally, with all goods and property shared among members of the community. Today, Hutterite colonies mostly exist on either side of the US-Canada border, where there are more than 500 of them.
In 2009, I was driving through Canada's Manitoba prairies in search of interesting photos for the newspaper I work for, the Brandon Sun, when I spotted some women working in the garden at Deerboine Colony. I knew a little about the Hutterites but not a lot, and pulled over to ask if I could make some pictures. The women were friendly and agreed, and I spent the afternoon chatting and photographing them.
One of the young women took a flip phone out and took some pictures of me while I was working. Until then, I would have assumed Hutterites avoid modern technology in much the same way Amish and many Mennonite communities do. But this woman had almost exactly the same phone as I did, and that's what hooked me. I had a series of discussions with the colony's minister, Tom, who was open to me coming back to learn more and take further photographs. At the time I thought: 'Here's a personal project I can sink my teeth into outside of my job and freelance work, and maybe spend a year on.' I've now been visiting Hutterite colonies for more than 15 years – a few dozen of them so far. I remain fascinated by their way of life, and want to show it in as nuanced a way as possible.
The colonies are very self-sufficient. Their members grow and raise the overwhelming majority of the food they eat. Deerboine has a poultry barn, and the life of an egg-laying chicken is about nine months. Every year there's a turnover as new hens are brought in for peak egg production and the last batch are slaughtered. When this photograph was taken, in 2015, I think they had around 11,000 chickens, and every able-bodied person in the community helped out in the two days of butchering.
The first time I approached Tom to ask whether I could photograph the process, he made a deal with me. He said: 'If you help out in the morning, you can photograph in the afternoon.' The chickens are stunned with an electric rod, then decapitated, then they go in a big drum that removes all the feathers before the carcass goes down a sort of assembly line to be cleaned and packaged to be frozen. I helped out with the cleaning part. I was vegetarian at the time, so it was an interesting experience, but it was fascinating to see how everyone worked.
Justin Hofer, who you see here, really stood out. Seeing him covered in blood, I wanted to make a portrait that showed this is hard work, and not pretty. About 80 to 90% of my Hutterite work is fly-on-the-wall documentary stuff, just waiting for things to happen, while the portraits tell the story a bit differently, giving more of an insight into individuals. They also terrify me, because I'm a fairly socially awkward person.
This portrait draws viewers in: you want to know the story behind it. Why is this young man covered in blood? It's a little shocking, and people in mainstream society can be uncomfortable with the idea of where their food comes from. Justin has since left the colony, as young Hutterites occasionally do, although some later return. They tend to do very well in the outside world as they have a reputation for being intelligent and hard-working. But there's clearly a huge draw to the kind of community life Hutterites practice – that closeness, not having to worry about losing wages if you get sick, or who's going to take care of you. There's a lot of joy and laughter. I can definitely see the appeal of Hutterite life.

Find something to photograph you're curious about and want to keep going back to again and again.'

As the days go by, and despite the impressive number of volunteers looking for Gillis, the chances of finding her alive diminish. Miller, a veteran of similar searches, has to continue to motivate her teams, even as her own appraisal of the situation grows gloomy. Miles to the south of the search, Lena Kucharski is a 76-year-old resident of a retirement community in Connecticut. A keen birdwatcher, she keeps her distance from her fellows, using her confinement in a wheelchair to dodge the unwanted attentions of a male suitor. She spends much of her day online, exchanging information and foraging reports with a young male naturalist who happens to have an intimate knowledge of the woods in the area where Gillis was last spotted. When this online friend starts spouting conspiracy theories about a Department of Defense training facility bordering the woods, Lena suppresses her initial scepticism and pursues a link to the missing woman that proves instrumental to the book's resolution. The three female narrators are each deftly drawn and the mechanics of the search operations are particularly absorbing. The sheer number of volunteers helping is extraordinary – but, as Miller remarks: 'Like the Amish raise their barns, Mainers search for each other in the woods.'

Actor Ellis Hollins spoke to The Mirror about his big comeback just months after his axe from the role of Tom Cunningham. Fans were gutted when Tom left the show after more than two decades. ‌ Just recently we saw the return of villain and show favourite Clare Devine, played by actress Gemma Bissix. Clare and Tom had quite the history, and now that might be revisited in dramatic upcoming episodes. ‌ Speaking exclusively to The Mirror at the British Soap Awards, Tom actor Ellis confirmed his return and confirmed there'd be scenes ahead of Tom's nemesis Clare. Clare terrorised Tom as a child, but now Tom may get his vengeance. Ellis told us: "It's very strange to come back at the same time as Clare. It's almost like they're gonna cross paths... but we'll see what happens." The actor vowed that if a showdown was to happen, Tom would be prepared this time now that he's grown up. But he also teased a twist fans might not expect. Ellis explained to us: "He was vulnerable and defenceless, and there was only so much he could do as a child. So it's gonna be very interesting now that Tom is grown up, and he can fend for himself if needs be. On the past coming back to haunt them both, he went on: "I think there's a lot there they can work with. He shared: "I had wondered if we'd form a partnership, but I'm not too optimistic about something like that happening. We'll see what goes on down the line and whether our characters diverge, or if they'll hate each other even more." Asked if a final showdown could be on the way, he revealed: "To really have that second chance for Tom to have redemption against Clare is important for a lot of people, as well as for Tom himself. It's gonna be so interesting to see whether Tom can get his revenge on Clare and whether he bides his time, and how orchestrated it will be." It doesn't seem as though we will find out what Tom has been up to since he left the village months ago as part of the show changes. He told us: "It's interesting, I'd love to answer that but as far as I'm aware I don't know. It's not something that has been communicated about a flashback, as much as it would be very interesting to see what Tom has been up to." On what fans can expect from the soap's 30th anniversary later this year, he spilled: "When I got the call I was assuming it was something to do with the 30th, but it's still quite premature. So I'm hoping there's gonna be something related to it but maybe on the sidelines, like reacting to certain people and not being in a crash!" She will replace country singer LeAnn Rimes, who joined the 2024 series of the ITV singing show, which will also see Sir Tom Jones and last year's winning joint coaches, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones from McFly, return this year. Speaking about joining the show, Rowland said: 'I am excited to join The Voice UK as a coach, and am looking forward to working with the excellent and passionate coaches the show is known for. Emma Willis will present the show once again, as contestants compete to win a record contract with Universal Music Group, £50,000 in cash, and a dream holiday to Universal Studios Resort in Florida. Willis said: 'I'm so excited to be back for another series of The Voice UK. 'It's one of the most joyful shows to work on – full of passion, talent and of course those unforgettable moments when the chairs turn. 'With our brilliant coaches returning and the utterly fabulous Kelly Rowland joining the panel, I know this series is going to be something really special.' Filming for the forthcoming series begins in the summer, with further broadcast details to be released in due course.
