PIL filed in MP HC after three die in 32-hour traffic jam; notice to advocate over 'why leave early' remark
The PIL was recently filed by Dewas-based advocate Anand Adhikari.
While the High Court issued notices to the respondents, including the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) asking to file their replies in the matter before July 7, during the course of the hearing on Monday, the counsel representing the NHAI (which is tasked with maintaining the nation's network) left everyone shell-shocked by casually questioning, 'Why do people even leave home so early without any work?'
While confirming that the bizarre comment was made by the NHAI counsel during Monday's hearing, the petitioner's counsel Girish Patwardhan said, 'Yes, the comment was made verbally by the advocate. The HC responded that the reasoning was not acceptable, as it would mean that citizens could no longer step out of their homes.'
Coming to know about the NHAI counsel's casual comment in open court, Sumit Patel, the nephew of one of the deceased men, expressed shock and anger.
'How can such an insensitive statement be made by a responsible person before the court?' he asked, speaking to journalists on Wednesday.
Sumit said they had not left home a pleasure trip, but to save the life of his critically ill uncle, 55-year-old Balram Patel, who died after both oxygen cylinders in their vehicle were exhausted due to the long traffic jam.
He questioned whether the NHAI counsel would have made the same remark had the tragedy involved the kin of someone from the NHAI. "We condemn the casual comment made by the counsel for the NHAI in the court,' he said.

Ahmedabad: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police took custody of Birju Salla, a Mumbai-based businessman previously convicted in a hijack threat case, from the Ahmedabad city crime branch on Thursday morning. The action follows his arrest in a multi-crore cheating case involving a jewellery businessman in Mumbai. Lucknow engineer joins ship crew in Sharjah, found dead hours later
Lucknow: Hours after joining his crew onboard a commercial ship in Sharjah in UAE, a 33-year-old engineer from Lucknow was found mysteriously dead on the vessel. Anurag Tiwari , a '3rd engineer' in the shipping line, was found dead on June 29 afternoon. An alumnus of St Francis College, Lucknow, Anurag was the eldest son of Anil Tiwari, a former UPPCL officer. Anil Tiwari on Thursday sought help from external affairs minister S Jaishankar to bring his son's body home. "@@DrSJaishankar Sir, my son Anurag Tiwari (Passport: W4768296), hired by Synergy Ship Arabia, boarded vessel JANA 505 at Sharjah, UAE on 29.06.2025. He died the same day. No clear cause of death, no help from the company. Kindly help with urgent repatriation of his body," Tiwari posted. Anurag had joined his team in Sharjah on June 28 and even spoke to his father over a video call. "During video call, Anurag informed me that commissioning of Jana 505 was a challenging task, and there was a sense of anxiety among teammates. The weather was hot, but he was mentally and physically fit for the task," Anil told TOI on Thursday. Anurag was hired by Mumbai-based recruitment and placement service agency, Avishka Shipping Private Limited (ASPL), for Singapore headquartered Synergy Ship Arabia (Part of Synergy Marine Group-owned by Kerala born Captain Rajesh Unni). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Beyond Text Generation: An AI Tool That Helps You Write Better Grammarly Install Now Undo In an e-mail to Anil Tiwari while informing about his son's demise, general manager of ASPL, Avdhut Dhaybar, wrote: "On June 29 while offloading operation of vessel Jana 505, Anurag was found unconscious in the engine room. Despite immediate CPR and swift transfer to the jetty via crew boat, the ambulance medical team declared him dead, as they didn't find any pulse during ECG assessment. The information was communicated by Jana Marine and Synergy Ship Arabia. " Anil said, "ASPL team informed me over phone that Anurag fainted on deck during duty. He was brought to the vessel bridge where he was administered CPR. There is a contradiction in the information shared with us as the deck and engine room are not the same." "I have contacted the embassy in UAE via e-mail and X (formerly Twitter) to repatriate my son's body. I want UAE authorities to find the cause of my son's death," added Anil. Anurag was a six-time gold medallist in swimming. Father of a 3-yr-old son, he was planning to head to the UK after the commissioning of the vessel to pursue an academic course in shipping. Synergy Ship Arabia's crew task was to commission Jana 505, a jack up vessel owned by Saudi Arabian conglomerate Jana Marine Service Company (subsidiary of Rashed Al-Rashed & Sons Group).

Franchise trap: Senior citizen scammed in 38L pizza deal gone wrong
Surat: What started as a dream venture for a 61-year-old retiree hoping to run a reputed pizza franchise turned into a financial nightmare. In a tale that mixes ambition, deception, and betrayal, a mother-daughter duo and their associate allegedly lured the senior citizen into a well-orchestrated franchise scam — swindling him out of Rs 38 lakh under the guise of selling him the Katargam outlet of an Ahmedabad-based pizza brand. The victim not only lost his money but also control of the business he was promised ownership of. According to Singanpor police, the accused — Binita Bhavsar, her daughter Priyansi Mistry, and Dhruv Mistry — allegedly duped Vipul Vachhani, 61, a resident of Adajan, by convincing him to purchase the Katargam franchise for Rs 40 lakh. The trio claimed they were planning to settle abroad and wished to sell the outlet. They have been booked on charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy. Vachhani found the opportunity through Bobby Thakkar, an administrator with the pizza company. Thakkar introduced him to the accused, who invited him to visit their outlet in Zircon Complex, Katargam. They encouraged him to spend two months at the shop to gain experience before finalising the deal. After gaining his trust, the accused agreed to sell the franchise for Rs 40 lakh. Vachhani paid Rs 20 lakh upfront and was promised legal transfer of ownership later. However, after he paid another Rs 10 lakh over time, the ownership remained unchanged. Meanwhile, customer payments made online were credited to Binita's account. In Jan 2024, Vachhani requested repayment of Rs 2.32 lakh collected online and asked the accused to clear pending GST dues of Rs 7 lakh and formally hand over the business. But the trio kept delaying with various excuses. In Feb and March, online customer payments totaling Rs 6.10 lakh were also withheld. Realising he was being misled, Vachhani approached Thakkar, who gave him the accused's contact details and advised him to shut the shop temporarily for 'renovation'. Vachhani complied and returned the keys to the property owner. The accused later collected the keys and quietly transferred the franchise to the owner of the Adajan outlet, cutting Vachhani out of the deal completely. While Binita and Priyansi are currently based in Pune, Dhruv resides in Navsari. Police have initiated a probe and formed teams to trace and apprehend the accused.
