‘They locked me up in Ajmal Kasab's jail cell': Sooraj Pancholi opens up about incarceration despite protests from his PR

Indian Express28-05-2025

Actor Sooraj Pancholi, who was charged with abetting the suicide of his former partner, actor Jiah Khan, opened up about the 20-odd days that he spent in Arthur Road Jail. According to Sooraj, he was put in solitary confinement, in the cell that was once occupied by 26/11 convict Ajmal Kasab. He said that nobody realises that he was acquitted after several years, and that he's still dealing with the aftermath of the case. During this time, Sooraj has tried, several times, to mount his acting career. His latest film, Kesari Veer, tanked at the box office.
In an appearance on the Hindi Rush podcast, Sooraj was asked if he would be comfortable talking about jail, and he said, 'It's all hazy. I was just a 21-year-old boy at the time. I was sent to Arthur Road Jail, and put in the 'anda cell' (solitary confinement). I was in the same cell where they had put Kasab. They treated me like I'd done a bomb blast.' At this time, Sooraj was seemingly asked to stop talking by his representatives. Looking at them off-camera, he said, 'Let me talk, it's the fact… It is what it is.'

He continued, 'They put me where they put Kasab. I didn't even have a pillow; I'd sleep on newspapers. They treated me terribly, like I'd committed some horrible crime. I'm not exaggerating. It was only after four or five years that I understood what I'd been through. It felt like a dream when it was happening. The CBI investigation happened… They kept me in the 'anda cell'. It was difficult.'
After his acquittal due to lack of evidence in 2023, Sooraj posted on social media, 'The Truth always wins!' Jiah Khan's mother, however, maintained that he's guilty of causing Jiah's death. She told CNN News 18, 'This is a case of murder. The abetment to suicide case has gone but the murder case is still there. I will not give up hope.. I will keep fighting. I will approach the High Court, Supreme Court, whatever is required to get justice for my daughter.'

SC refuses more time to Vinay Kulkarni in bail cancellation case, hearing tomorrow

New Delhi, June 5 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to grant a week to Karnataka MLA and former Minister Vinay Kulkarni to place certain documents on record in response to the state government's plea seeking cancellation of his bail in the murder case of BJP worker Yogesh Gowda. A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma allowed Kulkarni's counsels only one day to submit the documents, stating, 'It shall be open for the respondents to place on record any document either during the course of the day or hand over the same during the course of the hearing tomorrow.' Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for Kulkarni, had sought a week, citing the absence of certain documents on record that were before the trial court and arguing that the matter concerns his client's Article 21 rights (Fundamental Right to Life and Personal Liberty). He also referred to a related case involving other co-accused where the High Court has reserved orders on bail cancellation. 'We have not got any time in this. The other accused, whose cancellation is sought, the matter is reserved by the High Court... let that order also come. I'm not saying give me 4-6 weeks. Give me whatever reasonable time... if I don't get even a day to file a document... have it next week,' he urged. Opposing the request, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the State of Karnataka, pointed to Kulkarni's previous conduct to argue against any further accommodation. Rejecting the extension plea, Justice Karol remarked, 'We are going to be very, very unreasonable and harsh on you. We are adjourning the matter by one day.' The Court accordingly listed the matter for hearing tomorrow. During the proceedings, the bench also took exception to the conduct of a counsel appearing for Kulkarni, who had sought accommodation the previous day, claiming he was on vacation and did not have his black coat, despite appearing before the Court wearing one. On being questioned, the counsel clarified that he had borrowed the coat. 'You put a senior counsel to great embarrassment yesterday... and you logged in thrice... it only speaks volumes about the counsel, forget about the clients... never do that in future. Don't embarrass anyone who we know are noble people in the profession,' Justice Karol stated. The Karnataka government has sought cancellation of Kulkarni's bail, citing allegations of witness tampering. Kulkarni was arrested in 2020 in connection with the murder of BJP leader Yogesh Gowda and was granted bail in 2021. UNI SNG SSP

Former Sri Lanka spinner prosecuted for match-fixing

COLOMBO: Former spin bowler Sachithra Senanayake on Thursday became the first to be prosecuted under a new law aimed at stamping out corruption in sport on the island. The 40-year-old was indicted before the High Court in the southern city of Hambantota on match-fixing charges relating to a local tournament in 2020. He is currently on bail after being arrested in September 2023. He denies the charges. Senanayake last played for Sri Lanka in 2016 and made 74 international appearances. He is accused of influencing two Lanka Premier League players to fix matches in 2020. Police said Senanayake is the first player to fall foul of a 2019 law that makes match-fixing a criminal offence. A conviction could result in a maximum of 10 years in jail, a fine of up to 100 million rupees ($333,000) or both. Former sports minister Harin Fernando introduced the tough new law after saying the International Cricket Council (ICC) considered Sri Lanka one of the most corrupt cricketing nations. Another former sports minister, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, told parliament in 2021 that match-fixing was rife in the country. Aluthgamage was jailed for 20 years in an unrelated corruption case. Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup-winning skipper Arjuna Ranatunga in 2012 urged fans to boycott matches in protest against what he called "mismanagement, corruption and indiscipline" in the national team.
