CBSE, ICSE boards gain ground over state syllabus schools in DK

Time of India2 days ago

Mangaluru: Educational institutions in the coastal belt of Karnataka are increasingly switching from state board to CBSE or ICSE affiliations, with many parents believing that central board syllabi offer better prospects for their children, even though fees at these schools are higher than at those run by the state boards.
English communication skills, analytical abilities, and comprehensive subject coverage are believed to be the reasons influencing the choice.
In keeping with the trend, some schools have started offering CBSE/ICSE curriculum on their campuses while retaining their state board programmes.
While a CBSE school typically allows only 40 students per class, for a state board school, that figure is 70. Given their relatively smaller student intake, central board schools demand higher fees.
Dakshina Kannada currently has around 50 CBSE/ICSE schools, with Kendriya Vidyalaya, Panambur, being the first CBSE school in DK.
Sr Melissa, the principal of Mount Carmel Central School, which started its CBSE curriculum in 2008, said some schools start under the state board, but later switch to CBSE or ICSE curriculum.
"They can do so after obtaining a no objection certificate from the state govt and apply for CBSE or ICSE affiliation.
Once the paperwork is done, a team from the board concerned visits the school for final approval," she added.
This year, several schools have applied for CBSE/ICSE affiliation. One such institution is Ladyhill English Medium Higher Primary School, which obtained ICSE affiliation after switching over from the state board.
Sr Jennifer Moras, the school head, said they had applied for affiliation a year ago and received permission four months later.
