Anti-drugs initiative launched
SP Hariram Shankar presided over the event and discussed the harmful effects of drug abuse, noting with concern that Udupi district ranks third in Karnataka for the number of drug-related cases. He emphasised that regular interaction between college heads and the police department can act as a deterrent, preventing students from falling prey to drug addiction. He said that each college must now form an Anti-Drug Committee, which should consist of the principal, two staff members, and three students.
The jurisdictional police officer – either an inspector or a sub-inspector (law & order) – will act as the nodal officer for the committee.
The committee must meet once every month and organise at least one awareness activity–such as a campaign, walkathon, or similar outreach event. A representative from the local police station must be invited to every meeting, and the nodal officer should be called once every three months.

Over 1K with criminal backgrounds checked during late night combing op
Indore: Indore police carried out an extensive surprise combing and patrolling operation across the city late on Friday night, targeting goons, habitual offenders, and anti-social elements. A total of 1,015 individuals with criminal backgrounds were checked during the operation, out of which 492 were subjected to appropriate legal action. The police also issued over 289 warrants, including 67 permanent, 84 arrest, and 138 bail warrants, along with 136 summonses. In move against reckless driving, especially under the influence of alcohol, 97 offenders were booked under 185 sections of the Motor Vehicle Act, and 12 others faced action for rash driving. Additionally, 17 cases were registered against individuals for consuming alcohol in public places. In separate actions, Aerodrome police arrested one person with a country-made pistol and a live round, while MIG police registered four cases against those carrying illegal firearms. Tilak Nagar police also apprehended a history-sheeter for violating his externment order. Several absconding criminals were also apprehended during the operation and legal proceedings have been initiated against them. Police also collected affidavits from many of the suspects and prepared dossiers on several offenders, warning them against engaging in future criminal activities.

CET candidate dies in an accident on NH-19
Gurgaon: A 24-year-old Common Eligibility Test (CET) candidate died in a tragic accident on NH-19 near Baghola village in Palwal on Saturday when a speeding canter truck collided with her motorcycle. Shweta from Ankhir village in Faridabad was en route to her examination centre. She was taking the test for group-C posts under the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) in the afternoon shift. She was the pillion rider while her father, Mahavir, drove the motorcycle. On reaching the national highway, the motorcycle was struck by a speeding truck, causing the father to lose control. He fell a short distance away, and Shweta was fatally injured by the truck. International drug syndicate busted in UT, 3 foreign nationals held
Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough, the UT police crime branch has dismantled an international drug syndicate operating in the Tricity, arresting three foreign nationals in a high-stakes operation. The accused were caught red-handed while attempting to smuggle narcotics into the city. The arrested individuals have been identified as Imoru Damian (31) and Okoye Nnamdi (31), both Nigerian nationals, and Toufe Yousouf (30) from Cape Town, South Africa. Police recovered significant quantities of cocaine and amphetamine, along with a Honda City car used in the operation. The trio was produced in a local court and remanded to police custody for further interrogation. According to SP Jasbir Singh, crime branch, Damian and Yousouf were residing in a rented flat in Kharar, Mohali, while Okoye was based in Delhi. The crackdown began on July 22, when Damian was apprehended with 62.6g of amphetamine. He had entered India on a medical visa in 2021 and had overstayed illegally. Damian's interrogation led to the arrest of his two accomplices.
