Stellantis has pulled the plug on its hydrogen fuel cell development programme, saying it 'does not anticipate the adoption of hydrogen-powered light commercial vehicles before the end of the decade'.
Yep, Stellantis was hoping to lead the hydrogen revolution with vans, with medium-sized production previously set to kick off this summer in Hordain, France, while large hydrogen vans would be built in Gliwice, Poland. The carmaking MegaCorp said it'll no longer launch the vans with these powertrains, but it also made clear this 'will not impact staffing at Stellantis' production sites'. R&D spend that previously went on hydrogen tech will now 'be redirected to other projects'.

'In a context where the Company is mobilising to respond to demanding CO2 regulations in Europe, Stellantis has decided to discontinue its hydrogen fuel cell technology development program,' said COO for Europe Jean-Philippe Imparato.

'The hydrogen market remains a niche segment, with no prospects of mid-term economic sustainability. We must make clear and responsible choices to ensure our competitiveness and meet the expectations of our customers with our electric and hybrid passenger and light commercial vehicles offensive.'
Stellantis, which makes commercial vehicles under the Citroen, FIAT Professional, Opel, Peugeot, Ram and Vauxhall brands, also called out the lack of refuelling infrastructure in place for hydrogen vehicles, and the need for stronger purchasing incentives to bring prices down.

Back in December last year, UK pricing was revealed for the large Vauxhall Movano in its now-canned hydrogen form (pictured above). There's no easy way to say this, but it was to start at just over £70,000 and promised a range of 311 miles, with a refuelling time of just five minutes.

HOUSEHOLDS could save £200 a year without having to cut back on electricity through new tariffs. Bill payers could cut costs by signing up for time-of-use tariffs charging different rates during the day based on wholesale demand. 1 The warning comes as the government today lays out plans for more families to sign up for flexible energy tariffs as part of its new Clean Flexibility Roadmap. The roadmap will demand suppliers make information on smart tariffs for households without EVs easier to find. Households will also be helped to sign up for energy products and services that are tailored based on their electricity usage. Meanwhile, electric vehicle drivers will be eligible for discounts on their electricity at off-peak times. Michael Shanks, energy minister, said: 'This roadmap gives households and businesses the choice and control over when and how they use their energy. 'The flexible electricity system we are working to build will help make that a reality for consumers across the country, by supporting them to bring down their bills through using new tariffs and technologies. 'In this way we will protect working people's pockets and ensure they are the first to benefit from our clean power mission.' The government says pushing more households towards using electricity at off-peak times will help save the electricity network £70billion by 2050. Rocio Concha, Which? director of policy and advocacy, said: "Smart tariffs could help make household energy bills more affordable and reduce the cost of developing the UK's energy infrastructure but their success is dependent on consumer support and engagement. Asked if the Government should 'revisit' its non-dom rules, Mr Solomon told the Master Investor podcast: 'I think when you look at any jurisdiction, tax policy has to make sense, incentives matter. If you create tax policy or incentives that push people away, you harm your economy and you don't drive revenue increases. 'At the end of the day, most economies have a barbell in terms of tax receipts, and that end of the barbell, where you have very affluent people that have been successful, that pay a significant share of tax, if you push them away, and you push those smart, talented people that are much more mobile away, I think you hurt your prospects for growth.' Brexit pushing talent away Mr Solomon also said the UK's departure from the European Union had contributed to the erosion of London's status as a financial centre, with many top bankers moving to Paris and other parts of Europe. 'Today, it's much, much more dispersed. I think that if you look and you step back, London continues to be an important financial centre. But because of Brexit, because of the way the world is evolving, the talent that was more centred here is more mobile,' he said. 'We as a firm have many more people on the continent in the last five years than we did five to 10 years ago. I think that policy matters, incentives matter, and it's important that you get that balance right if you want to protect and retain the leadership position that the UK and London has in participating in the broad global financial system. I think it's fragile.' Mr Solomon said he was 'encouraged' by Ms Reeves's deregulation drive after the Chancellor warned that red tape was 'the boot on the neck' of business at her annual Mansion House speech. 'I'm encouraged, for example, when the Chancellor spoke here about regulation, she's talking about regulation not just for safety and soundness, but also for growth. Now we have to see the action steps that actually follow through and encourage that,' he said. Ms Reeves suggested she will make changes to the ring fence rules that separate retail banks from their riskier investing arms, although the government will stop short of removing the regime. However, she is likely to be met with some resistance from regulators, with Andrew Bailey, the Bank of England Governor, warning against a bonfire of red tape. Earlier this week, he urged Ms Reeves not to relax the ring fencing rules, describing them as 'an important part of the structure of the banking system'. He added: 'It makes resolution of banks, if they get into trouble, much easier, and it benefits, particularly in terms of UK customers and UK consumers, businesses and households. That is a helpful feature of it, I don't think it hinders banks fundamentally.'
