Man buys lottery ticket to get change for pizza tip — and hits $1 million jackpot

Miami Herald10-06-2025
A man who bought a California Lottery scratch-off ticket to break a $100 bill for a tip on his pizza order came away $1 million richer, officials reported.
McKinley Nelson ordered a pizza for his wife but found that he needed change to leave a cash tip when they arrived at a Round Table restaurant in Winters to pick it up, the California Lottery said in a Tuesday, June 10, news release.
So he went next door to Winters Wine & Liquor before picking up their food, lottery officials said.
'I had a $100 bill. So, I got two tickets,' Nelson told lottery officials. 'I think it was $20, and I went to the truck and started scratching.'
One, a Loteria Grande scratcher, seemed promising.
'I think this one's a million, but I'm not sure,' Nelson said he told his wife.
He was correct.
'So, my wife almost had a heart attack,' Nelson said. 'And then we had to go in and buy the pizza. It was all because of her, she's the one that likes the pizza.'
Nelson, 72, a retired veteran, plans to use the money to pay off his home, put some in savings and buy a camper van, lottery officials said. He said he's been playing the lottery for 40 years.
'It took a long time to win,' he said.
Winters is about a 30-mile drive west from Sacramento.

$2 million lottery ticket sold at Bay Area corner store

A Redwood City corner store that has been a neighborhood fixture for two decades sold its first multimillion-dollar lottery ticket this week. Roosevelt Liquor & Grocery, on the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and El Camino Real, sold a Scratchers ticket worth $2 million, the California Lottery announced Thursday. For owners Steve Kim and his wife, who have run the shop for 20 years, the sale marked a milestone. 'Most of the people who come in have been here for 10 years or more,' Kim told lottery officials. 'We have great relationships.' The store will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling a top prize of more than $1 million. Kim said he already has plans for the windfall. 'Next year I'm going to go to New York and visit my friend,' he said. The identity of the winner wasn't public as of Thursday morning. The California Lottery said the player must still go through its standard vetting process, which includes law enforcement review, before receiving the prize. That process typically takes six to eight weeks.

Magic Moments maker ties up with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan to launch premium tequila

By Chandini Monnappa and Hritam Mukherjee (Reuters) -Radico Khaitan, the maker of "Magic Moments" vodka, will invest up to $4.56 million and team up with Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath to launch a premium tequila brand, marking its foray into the category. The Indian liquor maker, known for premium offerings such as Rampur Indian Single Malt and Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin, will roll out the brand D'YAVOL Añejo — a premium spirit made from agave and aged about two years in wine casks. D'YAVOL, a luxury brand founded in 2022 by Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan, along with Leti Blagoeva and Bunty Singh, is headquartered in Amsterdam and offers vodka, blended malt Scotch whisky and premium streetwear. D'YAVOL Añejo is set to launch by December and depending on state excise duty, will be priced between 20,000 rupees ($228.21) and 30,000 rupees, Radico Khaitan Managing Director Abhishek Khaitan told Reuters on Tuesday. The launch comes as affluent Indians increasingly splurge on everything from luxury dining to premium alcohol, housing and cars. Alcohol sales in the country, according to data from analytics firm Crisil, are projected to grow as much as 10% to $61.35 billion in fiscal 2026. Tequila is one of the fastest growing segments globally and India is catching on very fast. The market size in the country is about 300,000 cases, out of which 15% is the Añejo (Spanish word meaning 'aged') category, Khaitan said. "We believe that in the next five years, tequila can reach a volume of about a million cases in India plus global market, so I think it was a great opportunity," he said. Under the partnership, Radico Khaitan and Shah Rukh Khan's family will each hold a 47.5% stake in the venture, while Kamath will own 5%. The deal also underscores the fierce competition in mass and premium liquor segments. Just three weeks ago, peer Tilaknagar Industries bought the "Imperial Blue" whisky brand from Pernod Ricard for $486 million.
