You have the highest chances of winning the Powerball if you live in one of these 5 lucky states
A new study revealed the U.S. states that have the highest chances of winning the Powerball — and sadly, none of the tri-state area was included in the top five.
The lottery game played in 45 U.S. states offers several different ways to win a prize, ranging from a player matching just the Powerball number and winning only a few dollars to matching all six numbers and winning the jackpot.

A study conducted by CSDB.gg looked at Powerball data from 1992-2025 to help them figure out where someone has to live to have the highest likelihood of winning either the Match 5, Match 5+ Power Play or Powerball jackpot per 100,000 residents.
New Jersey and New York ranked 31 and 32 on the 45-state list with only 2.45 and 2.14 wins per 100,000 locals.

On that sad note, it seems like good old Rhode Island is the place to be. Based on the data they analyzed, researchers figured out that there is an estimated 38.39 Powerball wins per 100,000 residents.
Little Rhody has seen 427 total Powerball wins over the past 33 years. Lucky them!
West Virginia came in at No. 2 with 27.29 wins per 100,000 residents. The Mountain State has seen over 483 total Powerball wins — so the odds are in the residents' favor.
Delaware slid into the third-place spot. It's seen over 285 total wins. New Hampshire estimates 21.15 wins per 100,000 residents with 285 total Powerball wins in history.

Indiana rounded out the list, coming in at No. 5 with 18.41 wins per 100,000 natives.
The bigger the state, the smaller the odds of a resident winning big.

On the flip side, there are five very unlucky states where the chances of a resident there ever screaming 'I won' are slim to none.
California has a recorded 357 total Powerball wins, but the Golden State will realistically only see 0.91 wins per 100,000 residents. Texas trailed close behind with 275 total wins, but the odds aren't great for residents of the Lone Star State: 0.88 wins per 100,000 people.

Wyoming comes in a close third at 0.85 wins. The No. 2 spot went to Washington, with only 0.78 wins per 100,000 residents.
And the worst state for lotto lovers to live in? Mississippi.
The Magnolia State has only been participating in the Powerball since early 2020 — and within the past five years, it's only had two wins. It's estimated that there will be approximately 0.07 wins per 100,000 locals.
'The regional gaps in Powerball wins are striking, with smaller states in the Northeast consistently outperforming larger states in terms of wins per capita,' said Corey Sims, Head of Content at CSDB.gg.
'This doesn't mean the lottery is rigged – it simply highlights that ticket-buying habits vary significantly across regions and that win rates are likely influenced by the year each state began participating in the Powerball.'

There are 600 millions reasons to dream, especially what you would do with the jackpot money. However, one thing all lottery winners have to take into account is the fact that their prizes will be taxed. So how much do you really get after taxes? It depends on a couple of factors: do you have to pay state taxes where you live? Will you take the lump sum payment or the annuity payout? According to Mega Millions' website, those electing to take the annuity option get one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments. Firefighters recover lost Grand Canyon mascot Brighty the Burro after wildfire reduced century-old building to rubble
Missing an ear and his front legs detached, Brighty the Burro certainly has seen better days. The 600-pound (273-kilogram) bronze statue used to greet visitors at the Grand Canyon Lodge on the national park's North Rim. The nearly century-old building was reduce to rubble this summer when a wildfire swept through the area. Brighty was found charred, his head and body mostly intact. As firefighters continued their work Friday to corral the stubborn flames, Brighty hit the road — strapped into the back of a pickup truck for a roughly five-hour journey that would take him from his home on the North Rim to the South Rim. Advertisement AP The plan calls for temporarily housing him in the Grand Canyon National Park's museum collection so he can be assessed. It will be up to park officials and conservation experts to determine if the burro can be carefully restored or if a new statue will have to be created. There's no timeline for the effort, but fans on social media already are weighing in with support for returning the burro to his former glory. They talk about taking family pictures with the sculpture in the background and reading the children's book that's loosely based on the original burro's adventures traversing the canyon. Advertisement 'It's a very special symbolic piece of history for a lot of people,' park spokesperson Joëlle Baird told The Associated Press. An enduring symbol of life along the rugged canyon, the hefty statue represents a free-spirited burro who lived more than a century ago. Brighty was known to migrate up and down the canyon as the seasons changed. He'd help haul water to a summer camp on the North Rim in exchange for pancakes and would give children rides. AP One of the first chores for the team will be testing for any toxic materials on the sculpture, Baird said. Then, depending on the damage assessment, the park could end up working with a foundry to make the burro whole again. Advertisement Brighty is a small but important part of what will be a yearslong effort for the National Park Service as it charts a path for restoration and reconstruction on the North Rim. More immediately, Baird said a special team that focuses on stabilizing the soil, controlling erosion and reseeding will begin assessing the burned areas starting next week. The Dragon Bravo Fire was sparked by lightning in early July. It burned for about a week before exploding into a fast moving conflagration that forced evacuations and consumed the Grand Canyon Lodge and dozens of cabins. The National Park Service has defended its handling of the fire, saying a sudden and extreme shift in the wind far exceeded forecasts. Persistent hot, dry and windy weather has hampered crews over the past several weeks, making it more difficult to fight the flames on the North Rim and elsewhere around the West — from Idaho and Montana to California, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, nearly four dozen large fires are burning in the U.S., with more than 17,700 firefighters and support personnel assigned to them.
