Unlike other sports, the WNBA's All-Star break actually comes at the season's midpoint. This is a great opportunity to assess the futures markets and uncover betting value.
I think a solid wager exists for the Most Improved Player award. Atlanta Dream guard Allisha Gray has 15/1 odds at DraftKings, and I think she should instead be among the favorites.
When analyzing awards, one must realize these unique markets and entail much more than a player's or team's performance. Those obviously matter but an award also involves votes by media members.
While that variable can be tricky, it also means it is a circumstance beyond an oddsmaker's wheelhouse. Their normal routine requires assessing outcomes of games and an athlete's statistical output. Handicapping voters is a much different animal.
Specifically, the requirements for this award are often left up to interpretation. There is no exact criteria, such as the Sixth Player of the Year mandating a maximum level of games started. Recent winners have included role players significantly increasing their stats or a fringe All-Star having an All-WNBA season.
Gray would be categorized with the latter. She was recently selected as an All-Star starter for the first time and is averaging career-highs in points, rebounds and assists. Her Atlanta Dream are also having a solid season and she figures to produce more now that fellow All-Star Rhyne Howard will miss at least the rest of the month with a knee injury.
Most importantly, ESPN just published an article with four reporters making their midseason selections and Gray earned three of the votes. She was also the consensus choice in June.

Other candidates, including betting favorite Veronica Burton (+350 odds), also have decent cases. They have boosted their production by more than Gray has. However, they could cannibalize each other, especially since Burton and Kayla Thornton (+400 odds) are teammates on the Golden State Valkyries. Plus, receiving increased minutes on an expansion team could even diminish their candidacy.
Additionally, others with shorter odds (Azura Stevens +550, Brittney Sykes +650, Erica Wheeler +700, Gabby Williams 10/1, Sami Whitcomb 12/1) don't really seem like a case that separates themselves from the others.
Betting on the NBA?
Previous winners Brionna Jones (2021) and Jackie Young (2022) remind me of Gray's season. They only slightly improved their stat lines but each did help their team finish with the league's best record.
Atlanta will not have the top seed but Gray is clearly leading this team and that could be enough. Plus, voters view her in a special light and thus passes the smell test, so Gray could receive this award for both her play and career achievement.

Owen Farrell returns to Lions bench as Andy Farrell makes 3 changes for second test

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Owen Farrell has been selected on the bench in a British and Irish Lions overhaul for the second test against Australia that includes three changes to the starting lineup that won the first test 27-19 in Brisbane last weekend. Farrell led the Lions in their last midweek tour game against the First Nations and Pasifika squad and is now set to make his first test appearance since England's World Cup campaign in 2023 on Saturday. His father, head coach Andy Farrell, recalled Bundee Aki to start at inside center to replace Sione Tuipulotu in the only change to the starting backline. England's Ollie Chessum was drafted in to partner skipper Maro Itoje as a replacement for injured Ireland lock Joe McCarthy and Andrew Porter replaced Ellis Genge at loosehead, giving the Lions an all-Ireland frontrow. Joining Owen Farrell on the bench will be Jac Morgan, restoring a Welsh player to the match 23 after an absence last weekend. Australia coach Joe Schmidt made three changes to his starting pack with blindside flanker Rob Valetini and lock Will Skelton returning from injuries to add some size and weight and hooker David Porecki joining the frontrow. Langi Gleeson returns as forward cover on the eight-man reserves bench, which only has two backs — scrumhalf Tate McDermott and utility Ben Donaldson. The Wallabies need a win on Saturday in Melbourne to keep the three-test series alive. The Lions are now 7-0 in Australia, including the 27-19 victory in last week's first test against the Wallabies and wins over Super Rugby franchises Western Force, Queensland Reds , Waratahs and Brumbies and two invitational teams. The Lions have taken leads into the Melbourne match in the last two tours to Australia in 2001 and 2013 but lost the second test there both times. In 2001, Australia rallied to clinch the series in Sydney in the third test. The Lions won the Sydney decider 12 years ago. ___ Squads: Australia: Tom Wright, Max Jorgensen, Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i, Len Ikitau, Harry Potter, Tom Lynagh, Jake Gordon; Harry Wilson (captain), Fraser McReight, Rob Valetini, Nick Frost, Allan Ala'alatoa, David Porecki, James Slipper. WNBA star Caitlin Clark says a kid-friendly ritual helps her manage stress

Caitlin Clark, 23, enjoys a good old Disney movie whenever she wants to unwind. The WNBA star's pregame ritual also involves journaling and listening to calming music. But "there's no better rest and recovery than just straight up sleeping," she said. Caitlin Clark handles a high-pressure game the same way a parent might soothe a meltdown: with some calming music and a Disney movie. During an All-Star Weekend event held in Indianapolis on Saturday, the WNBA star spoke to Glamour about how she takes care of her mental and physical health as a pro athlete. Clark said that one of her favorite ways to manage stress is rewatching Disney classics. "The other day I watched 'The Parent Trap,' which literally never gets old, even though I know every single word in it," Clark, 23, said. Even though the latest season of "Love Island" was a viral hit, the basketball player says it's just not her thing. "I watched the first episode but couldn't get into it. Maybe it was too cringe for me? And it takes a lot of time — there's a new episode like every single day! I just couldn't do it." Instead of blasting hard-hitting tunes, her pre-game ritual is all about calming melodies or no music at all. The Indiana Fever player also enjoys journaling before each game, a habit that helps her clear her head and stay focused on her goal. "It makes me really intentional about what I want to accomplish and is a good reset if I'm feeling nervous or anxious about the game, to kind of wipe that away," she said. Whenever she can, Clark unwinds with a round of golf. While traveling for games, she also takes evening walks and tries new restaurants with her teammates. Being in the public eye isn't easy, and that's why she also checks in regularly with the sports psychologist on staff. "I don't just talk about things that stress me out but also the joys in my life, and that's always a good reminder and reset for me," Clark said. But her favorite tip for staying in tip-top shape? A good night's rest. "I've obviously done everything under the sun, but there's no better rest and recovery than just straight up sleeping," Clark said. As she recovers from a groin injury, she said she has come to truly understand the value of self-care. "This is the first time I haven't felt like a young body that can run around and sprint every day and just continue to do that," Clark said. "Being a professional athlete, you really have to take care of both your body and your mind — it's been a journey learning about that." As of Tuesday, Clark has missed 11 regular-season games due to various injuries, per ESPN. She never missed a game during her four years playing for the University of Iowa or during her rookie WNBA season in 2024. Clark isn't the only athlete who has spoken about the ways they cope with the pressure and take care of their health. Simone Biles said she saw her therapist ahead of the 2024 Olympic gymnastics team final, where she and her team went on to win gold. "At the beginning of the day, I started off with therapy this morning, so that was super exciting. I told her I was feeling calm and ready and that's kind of exactly what happened," Biles said to reporters after the competition. Masters champion Rory McIlroy says he overcomes performance anxiety by visualizing the worst-case scenario. "For whatever reason, imagining the worst-case scenario gave me a level of comfort because I felt like any worst-case scenario that I could bring up in my head, I'd be able to deal with," he said during an April appearance on "The Whoop Podcast." A representative for Clark did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours. Read the original article on Business Insider

MLS, playing without Messi, beats Liga MX 3-1 in All-Star Game

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Sam Surridge, Tai Baribo and Brian White scored goals and Major League Soccer defeated Liga MX of Mexico 3-1 in the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday night playing without Lionel Messi. Messi and his Inter Miami teammate, Jordi Alba , both face possible league suspensions for their team's next match against Cincinnati on Saturday for missing the All-Star game . 'Messi's the greatest,' MLS coach Nico Estévez said. 'Playing with him and coaching him would be something amazing. But we have to show respect for the guys that showed up today. They did great. It's a special week, a unique event. Not everyone can enjoy this. I'm fortunate.' Liga MX's James Rodríguez also chose not to play in the game played in front of more than 20,000 fans at Q2 Stadium. MLS has defeated Liga MX three times in four tries. Last year Liga MX won 4-1 in Columbus, Ohio. The MLS All-Stars won in 2022 and beat Liga MX on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw a year prior. Messi has yet to appear in an MLS All-Star Game. He missed the game last year with an injury. Messi is currently tied with Nashville's Surridge for the MLS lead in goals with 18. Surridge scored another goal on Wednesday, from the middle of the box, heading in to the lower right corner a ball directed by LAFC's Denis Bouanga in the 28th minute. The opportunity developed after Bouanga had a point-blank attempt stopped by Liga MX goalkeeper Luis Malagon (Club America). Bouanga hustled to retrieve the long rebound and sent it to Surridge. Before the goal, both teams had attempts rejected with diving stops by Luis Malagón and Austin FC's Brad Stuver in the 13th and 18th minutes. MLS went ahead 2-0 in the 51st minute when Diego Rossi (Columbus) passed ahead to Baribo (Philadelphia), whose right footed shot from the center of the box made it to the lower left corner of the goal. Liga MX closed the gap to 2-1 just 13 minutes later when Gilberto Mora (Club Tijuana) converted a pass from Elias Montiel (Pachuca) from the middle of the box. 'We had moments when we played good soccer,' Liga MX coach André Jardine said. Liga MX's bid to tie the match was snubbed when a shot by Diber Cambindo (Necaxa) was stopped by Yohei Takaoka (Vancouver) in the 75th minute. White (Vancouver) finished the scoring in the 80th minute. Baribo ranks fourth in MLS with 14 goals and White has scored 11 as they chase Messi and Surridge. 'They are competitive,' Estévez said. 'One scores and the other says 'I have to score.' Brian in the end said 'I have to score.' ' Up next MLS and Liga MX continue their rivalry with the Leagues Cup that begins on July 29 and concludes Aug. 31. The competition features a new format, with all 18 clubs from Liga MX and the top 18 from MLS competing. Last year all 47 clubs from the two leagues were included. ___ AP soccer:
