Comedian Romesh Ranganathan says he is ‘taking a step back' but not retiring
The 47-year-old from Crawley, known for his Bafta-winning TV series with comic Rob Beckett – titled Rob And Romesh Vs, emphasised that he will not be retiring.
'I know that people sort of say I'm busy and I'm always like, trying to work and stuff. There is no strategy. There's no game plan. I have no end game,' he told Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs.
'There's no vision board or anything like that. (I'm) just doing whatever feels good.'
He added: 'I do feel like I'm sort of settling into winding things up, like not winding things up, but I'm taking a step back.
'I want to be at home a bit more. And by the way, this is not an announcement of retirement, but I do feel like, relatively recently, this is quite fortuitous that we're talking about this at the time that we are, because I have just hit this period of thinking I am probably going to just be a bit more measured in what I do going forward.
'I think I might take a bigger break between bits. I've told you, I've not hit the thing yet, maybe this next thing could be it, but it's not going to be it if I don't go off and just live life.'
Ranganathan also reflected on the time he spent as a maths teacher, before his current career, and said it was more stressful than working in comedy.
'There wasn't a single day of that job that I didn't feel completely fulfilled,' he said.
'I felt very stressed. It's the most stressed I've ever been in my life actually.
'There's not been a single day of my comedy career that's even come close to the stress that I felt as a teacher. I cannot speak highly enough of teachers and teaching and how I loved that job.'
Alongside his stand-up, the comedian is known for presenting game show The Weakest Link and starring in BBC One sitcom Avoidance.
He also starred in BBC Two documentary series The Misadventures Of Romesh Ranganathan and BBC Three's Asian Provocateur, which saw him trace his family roots.
In 2024, he took over Claudia Winkleman's Saturday morning slot on BBC Radio 2 and he also presents Romesh Ranganathan: For The Love Of Hip Hop on the station.

'Dark' ITV true crime drama quietly added to Netflix soars up chart
Netflix viewers are bingeing a crime drama detailing the horrific crimes of serial killers Fred and Rose West. The harrowing Netflix documentary Fred & Rose West: A British Horror Story has brought renewed interest to the frightening serial killer case that gripped headlines in the 90s. Viewers are now turning to a dramatisation of the grim case, Appropriate Adult, which was recently added to Netflix and is now ranking in the streaming platform's top 10. The two-part mini series focuses on how Fred and Rose West were brought to justice, first airing on ITV in 2011. As the opening credits state: 'This is a true story. The drama follows Gloucester social worker Janet Leach (Emily Watson) and her pivotal role in discovering the bodies of women the couple had killed and buried on their property. Dominic West plays Fred West in the drama, while Mr Bates vs The Post Office star Monica Dolan plays his wife Rose. Across the two episodes, we follow Fred's arrest, his subsequent suicide and the lifetime conviction of Rose. West went on to win the Best Actor Bafta for his turn in the chilling drama, while Emily Watson took home the Best Actress gong. Leach became Fred West's 'appropriate adult' – hence the show's title – and sat in on police interviews with him. During these interviews, he revealed in terrifying detail the horrors his victims had faced. Police officers tapped Leach in order to avoid any future insinuation Fred West had not understood the charges he was under investigation for. The Crown star said at the time that inhabiting the serial killer was so difficult it gave him nightmares. 'I have this recurring dream where I'm perched on a wall and Fred West is trying to grab me and pull me down,' he told the BBC. He also defended the drama against accusations it would prove triggering to the victims' families. 'I think it's effective without being sensational in any way,' he continued. 'Thousands of people still go missing in this country every year and are never found. 'Fred West preyed on runaways without being caught for 25 years. We should not forget this case, because there could be others like him. Netflix subscribers have been returning to the drama since the true crime documentary dropped on the streaming service – and it now ranks fifth on the platform's ranking of top TV. Sharing their reviews on IMDB, @truecrimeallthetime said the drama is 'seriously gripping', writing: 'Excellent dramatisation of this deeply disturbing case. Respectfully done with classy performances and simple but effective direction.' @Aimeemcdonald-55532 wrote it is 'definitely a must-see', adding: 'I was very moved by this dramatisation. Brilliant acting which left me with chills. I had to keep reminding myself that these events actually happened, because it's so stomach churning.' More Trending However, not everyone was taken with the dramatisation as @rupie had issues with the apparent sympathetic portrayal of Fred West. They wrote: 'It was repellent – as well as incomprehensible – to watch Leach's developing interest and fascination with Fred West. 'Anyone watching this movie should first do some Googling to find out the details of what Fred and Rosemary West perpetrated. If anyone deserves to be called human monsters, it is this pair. In the light of this knowledge, the script's clear intention – to me anyway – to actually make West into a figure of sympathy is disgusting.' Appropriate Adult is available to stream on Netflix. Popular BBC series to return to TV as huge cast changes are confirmed
Another trip to Port Devine is on the horizon, with BBC confirming the return of Hope Street for a fifth series – which will include the milestone 50th episode. The BBC One daytime drama, which has proven incredibly popular with viewers in the UK, the US and beyond, follows the local police department and residents of fictional Northern Irish town Port Devine. Filmed in Donaghadee on Northern Ireland's coastline, Hope Street has enjoyed four successful series, which – in addition to the episodic crime stories – all have had their own unique identity. The first centred on the arrival of the Leila Hussain (Amara Karan), whose presence got everyone talking, while the second saw corrupt detective Al Quinn (Stephen Hagan) join the police force The third series saw Hollyoaks star Karen Hassan join the show as Jo Lipton, while the fourth, which Metro deemed the show's best to date, saw some major cast changes take place, with a new inspector in the form of Derry Girls' Tara-Lynne O'Neill. It's been quite some time since the latest season concluded and fans were left wondering about the show's future but I am pleased to report that Hope Street will return. Filming is imminently set to commence in Donaghadee for the fifth series, which will feature the milestone 50th episode. Fan-favourites Kerri Quinn (Marleen Pettigrew), Niamh McGrady (Nicole Devine-Dunwoody), Aaron McCusker (Clint Devine-Dunwoody), Finnian Garbutt (Ryan Power), Tara Lynne O'Neill (Eve Dunlop) will all return. Also returning are last season's favourites, Eleanor Methven (Lois Dunlop), Paddy Jenkins (Seamie McCarthy), Katie Shortt (Brandi McClure), Marcus Onilude (Luke Jackson), RhéAna Kamalu (Chloe Jackson) and Jonny Grogan (Ross Dunlop). This season appears to be the first without Callum McCarthy star Niall Wright, who recently joined the cast of Channel 4's A Woman Of Substance remake. Much like the previous years, Series 5 of Hope Street will bring along some new faces, with Krypton star Cameron Cuffe joining the cast as Constable Donal Gallagher. A well-known local rugby player, Donal is confident and charming but his career was cut short by an injury. As the newest member of the Port Devine police department, however, he has found a new zest for life – and will soon make his mark in Port Devine. Donal isn't the only newcomer, with The Lovers star Jenn Murray joining the cast as Doctor Sasha Cookson. Sasha, who has taken over her father's GP surgery, is direct, straight-talking and she wastes little time in rubbing up some of the locals the wrong way. Donal, however, finds such a thing rather charming – and it's not long before sparks begin to fly between the two. Veteran composer, Alf Clausen, who scored for the hit show, has died at the age of 84 following an illness. Clausen was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy eight years ago. He joined The Simpsons from the second series in 1990 and continued working on the show until its 28th season in 2017. He was behind some of the shows iconic songs and, along with lyricist Ken Keeler, won an Emmy award in 1997 and 1998 for the songs We Put the Spring in Springfield and You're Checkin' In (A Musical Tribute to the Betty Ford Center). Clausen's first break as a TV composer came in 1985 on the ABC show, Moonlighting, starring Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd. He also started composing on ALF, the 80s sitcom, during this period where he provided the theme song and scored over 100 episodes. But when offered the opportunity to work on The Simpsons he was initially reluctant to work on the show, preferring to work on films. But Matt Groening, series creator of The Simpsons, convinced Clausen that he was perfect for the role. He was nominated for another 21 Emmys for his work on the programme in addition to the two he won in the 1990s. He was nominated for a total of 30 throughout his career. While Clausen did not compose the main theme music for The Simpsons, his music often used that composition and he also rearranged and re-recorded the theme throughout his time on the show. In August 2019, Clausen filed a lawsuit against both Disney and Fox following his dismissal from the animated series. He alleged his dismissal owed to his age and medical conditions but Disney lawyers managed to get this aspect of the case dismissed in 2020. Clausen continued with other elements of his claim including wrongful discharge and retaliation.
