PM inaugurates first phase of Indore metro

on Saturday inaugurated the first phase of the
Indore metro
project through video link from Bhopal, marking the beginning of the first metro rail service in Madhya Pradesh.
Speaking at the Women Empowerment Mega Conference in Bhopal on the occasion of the 300th birth anniversary of Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar, Modi said, "Madhya Pradesh has received its first metro today. Indore has already earned global recognition for its cleanliness. Now, the city will also be known for its metro." Commercial operations started on Saturday on the approximately 6 km 'Super Priority Corridor' between Gandhi Nagar Station and Station No 3 of the 'Super Corridor', officials said.
The phase, built at a cost of Rs 1,520 crore, has five metro stations, all named in the honour of prominent women -- Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Terminal, Maharani Lakshmi Bai Station, Rani Avanti Bai Lodhi Station, Rani Durgavati Station and Veerangana Jhalkari Bai Station.
The inaugural metro ride from Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Terminal was reserved only for women passengers including a group of sanitation workers.
At the inauguration event held in Indore, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu said, "Prime Minister Modi has given a major gift to Indore in the form of metro rail service. Indore has become the 24th city in the country to launch metro services." Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said the city has witnessed the evolution of public transport from bullock carts and horse carriages to buses. "Now, with the launch of metro rail, this is a historic moment," he said.
The foundation of the Super Priority Corridor, where operations started on Saturday, was laid on September 14, 2019. A trial run on the corridor, located in a newly developed part of the city, was conducted in September 2023.
While metro stations in the city are designed to accommodate six-coach trains, currently three-coach trains with a capacity to carry 980 passengers are in operation.
A total of 31.32 km of metro network is planned for Indore, the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, with an estimated cost of Rs 7,500.8 crore.
The complete network will have 28 stations, serving the city which currently has a population of over 35 lakh.

The Aravalli Green Wall Project is an ambitious project aimed at reforesting the 700 kilometres of the Aravalli range. The Aravali range, stretching across four states, has seen environmental degradation in the past few decades. The new push under the Aravalli Green Wall Project will create a green zone from Delhi to Gujarat, to act as a "natural barrier against desertification" and will also aid in groundwater recharge. 'Our focus is to rejuvenate areas linked with this range. We are going to work with the respective local administrations and going to emphasise things such as improving water systems, curbing dust storms, stopping eastward expansion of the Thar desert and more,' PM Modi further said. The project will go beyond conventional methods and encourage new techniques in urban as well as semi-urban areas to address space constraint problems. 'Plantation activities will be geo-tagged and monitored on the Meri LiFE portal. I call upon the youth of our nation to take part in this movement and add to our planet's green cover,' PM Modi said. As part of the major drive, one thousand permanent nurseries will be set up to revive the country's oldest mountain range. Technologies like satellite mapping will also be deployed to facilitate speed and transparency in the project. Notably, the Aravali range is home to 22 wildlife sanctuaries and four tiger reserves, namely Ranthambore, Sariska, Ramgarh-Vishdhari, and Mukunda Hills.

Communal post case: Influencer Sharmishtha Panoli gets bail by Calcutta HC; to furnish bail bond of Rs 10,000
Sharmishtha Panoli (File photo) NEW DELHI: The Calcutta high court on Thursday granted interim bail to social media influencer and law student Sharmishtha Panoli, nearly a week after her arrest for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through an Instagram video. Panoli was arrested on May 30. The high court directed Panoli to furnish a bond worth Rs 10,000. The 22-year-old, who was taken into custody by Kolkata Police from Gurugram last Friday, had been sent to judicial custody by a local court in Kolkata till June 13. However, her legal team moved the high court seeking relief, arguing that the case was a matter of free speech and that Panoli had already removed the controversial video and issued an apology. Her counsel, Md Samimuddin, said the court directed the state to ensure Panoli receives basic amenities while in custody, noting that such provisions were currently lacking. 'The High Court has also instructed the authorities not to register any fresh FIRs on the same cause of action,' he added. The arrest stemmed from a complaint filed by Wajahat Khan Qadri at the Garden Reach police station in Kolkata. PM Modi launches Aravalli Green Wall Project, expands 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign
Prime Minister Narendra Modi planted a sapling at the Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park here on World Environment Day on Thursday (June 5, 2025), extending the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign and launching a special initiative to reforest the 700-km Aravalli mountain range that stretches from Delhi to Gujarat. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the Aravalli range is one of the oldest on the planet, covering Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi, and that the last several years have brought to the fore several environmental challenges relating to the range, which his government is committed to mitigating. "Our focus is to rejuvenate areas linked with this range. We are going to work with the respective local administrations and emphasise things such as improving water systems, curbing dust storms, stopping eastward expansion of the Thar desert and more," he said. "In the Aravalli range and beyond, in addition to the traditional planting methods, we will encourage new techniques, especially in urban and semi-urban areas where there are space constraints. Plantation activities will be geo-tagged and monitored on the Meri LiFE portal," he said. The Prime Minister called upon the youth to take part in the movement and contribute to increasing the planet's green cover. He also flagged off electric buses under the Delhi government's sustainable transport initiative. "This will also improve 'Ease of Living' for the people of Delhi," the Prime minister said. The Aravalli Green Wall Project is a major initiative to expand green cover in the five-km buffer area around the Aravallis in 29 districts of the three states and a Union territory. The government said this initiative will play a crucial role in combating air pollution in the region, achieving India's climate goal of creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and restoring 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. The project will enhance the biodiversity of the Aravallis through afforestation, reforestation and restoration of water bodies. It will also help improve soil fertility and water availability in the region, the government said. It added that the project will benefit local communities by generating employment and income opportunities. The Chief Ministers of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat also participated in the launch of the project. Officials from the Environment Ministry said around 1,000 nurseries will be developed in the 29 districts located in the Aravalli range as part of the initiative. The five-km wide green buffer will cover 6.45 million hectares across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi. Within this buffer zone, about 42% (2.7 million hectares) of land is currently degraded. The Aravalli range acts as a natural barrier against desertification, preventing the expansion of the Thar desert and protecting cities such as Delhi, Jaipur and Gurugram. It is also the source of important rivers such as the Chambal, Sabarmati and Luni. Its forests, grasslands and wetlands support endangered plant and animal species. However, deforestation, mining, livestock grazing, and human encroachment are worsening desertification, damaging aquifers, drying up lakes and reducing the range's ability to sustain wildlife. Of the total degraded area, 81% is in Rajasthan, 15.8% in Gujarat, 1.7% in Haryana and 1.6% in Delhi.
