Pakistan eyes US$1bil valuation in Roosevelt Hotel redevelopment plan
KARACHI : Pakistan is seeking a valuation of at least US$1 billion for the Roosevelt Hotel it owns in New York and is ready to part with a minority stake in the prime Manhattan property as it scouts for a redevelopment partner, a senior government official said.
Named after former US president Theodore Roosevelt, the century-old property in midtown Manhattan is seen as one of Pakistan's most valuable foreign assets, which it acquired in 2000.
Faced with mounting losses, the over 1,000-room hotel was shut in 2020, and has also operated briefly as a migrant shelter.
As part of the government's US$7 billion IMF-backed privatisation push, Pakistan's government approved a 'transaction structure for the Roosevelt Hotel' on Tuesday, saying it won't do an outright sale but has decided to adopt a joint venture model to maximize long-term value. It gave no further details.
The senior Pakistani official said the government will retain ownership in the project through an equity partnership, but declined to disclose the size of the stake being offered to any potential JV partner.
The official declined to be named since the process is confidential. JLL, or Jones Lang LaSalle, will run the process and the government is eyeing a valuation of over US$1 billion for the 42,000 square feet property it hopes could be redeveloped for residential-cum-office use, the official said.
'It is among the best pieces of land in NY real estate … The process begins immediately and is expected to be completed in the next six-nine months,' said the official.
Pakistan's Privatisation Ministry and state-owned Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), which owns the hotel through its investment arm, did not respond to request for comments, and neither did JLL.
Pakistan this week also approved four parties to bid for a stake in debt-ridden PIA.
The hotel is located near marquee New York destinations such as Grand Central Terminal, Times Square, and Fifth Avenue, placing it in one of Manhattan's most valuable commercial zones.
Pakistan's government is estimating the redevelopment will take 4–5 years, the official said, adding the 'interest level is extremely high.'
In June, the government said it expects US$100 million in the initial payment from the joint-venture partnership by June 2026.

Accenture makes maiden banking deal in Malaysia with Aristal acquisition
KUALA LUMPUR: New York-listed Accenture Plc has acquired Malaysia-based consulting and digital transformation firm Aristal Solutions Sdn Bhd, marking its first banking-focused acquisition in the country. The acquisition aims to enhance Accenture's ability to help banks in Malaysia upgrade core banking systems, improve operational efficiencies, and manage complex transitions such as mergers and platform overhauls. Its financial services lead in Southeast Asia Paul Ng said the move reflects the company's continued investment in the region to help clients embrace artificial intelligence, cloud, and modern core systems. "This acquisition strengthens Accenture's local capabilities to support these demands, particularly in navigating large-scale digital transformation for banks. "With deep expertise in core banking systems, Aristal has helped banks upgrade outdated platforms, improve operations, and deliver better customer experiences," said Ng in a statement today. Ng added that this also includes recent initiatives such as the acquisition of Percipient's digital twin technology for banks in Singapore and the establishment of the AI Refinery Engineering Hub to accelerate innovation and scalable transformation across the region. Aristal, which was founded in 2006, is known for its deep expertise in core banking transformation. The firm has delivered large-scale information technology and business transformation projects across Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Aristal managing director Lin Kok Liong said joining Accenture opens up strong opportunities for its team in Malaysia to grow and contribute on a larger stage. "By integrating into Accenture's global network of innovation and talent, we are not only expanding our capabilities, but also enhancing the value we can deliver to clients locally," he said. With the global core banking market projected to reach US$28.8 billion by 2027, Malaysia is expected to follow suit, driven by industry-wide efforts to modernise systems and strengthen digital capabilities. Additionally, Aristal's 30-member senior team will join Accenture's financial services practice in Malaysia. The integration is expected to strengthen the delivery of end-to-end transformation projects for financial institutions at scale.

Ramasamy: What's PMX give-away as Bumi policy stands in the way of Malaysia's US tariff negotiation?
I AM not sure whether Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is as serious as he sounds in defending the preferential policies for the Bumiputera community in the country. The US imposition of 25% tariffs (from 24% previously) on Malaysian exports seems invariably related to the imposition of 30% Bumiputera equity on foreign firms, the nature of the halal industry – and not least – the prevention of foreign equity in the gas and petroleum industry. While Anwar talks tough about not diluting the Bumiputera stake in the country – calling it the 'red lines' – the government at the same time wants to engage the US amicably and diplomatically to reduce tariffs. I was informed by some Malaysian former diplomats that Anwar has the peculiar habit of talking tough and using non-compromising language when addressing the local audience, particularly the Malay segment of the population. To the Malays, he wants to be seen as a champion of their political and economic interests, especially through the manifestation of pro-Bumiputera policies. In other words, Anwar – despite his awareness of what is wrong with some of the Bumiputera policies – is not prepared to confront them or to come up with better national policies that will benefit all segments of the population. It doesn't take rocket science to know that the pro-Bumiputera policies have essentially benefitted the Malay elite as opposed to the man-0n-the-street Malays in the administrative and political sectors. Limited bargaining power By focusing on political expediency and survival, Anwar lacks the courage and wisdom to confront the political, social and economic realities in the country. He is so afraid that any attempt to critically examine the special privileges of the Bumiputera might be construed as a zero-sum game – the loss of the Bumiputera and the gain of the economically vibrant non-Malays in the country. Whether Anwar is going to tamper with the privileges of the Bumiputera must not be judged by his political rhetoric but rather by what Malaysia is going to give away in exchange for reduced tariffs. I would certainly think that there is a serious mismatch between what is said by Anwar and what Malaysia is going to concede to the US in the tariff talks. Anwar should not behave as though he is anti-US – he is far from it. He certainly lacks the courage and determination of twice former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Just remember how Dr Mahathir opposed the IMF (International Monetary Fund) policies during the country's financial crisis in the 1990s. While Anwar was prepared to go along with the dictates of the IMF, Dr Mahathir sought to confront them. It is the same Anwar who now wants to take a tough stand in protecting the rights of Bumiputera but in the on-going tariff negotiations with the US, he might be much more subdued with the potential to negatively affect the country's economy. – July 21, 2025 Former DAP stalwart and Penang chief minister II Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy is chairman of the United Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai) interim council. Wall Street futures rise on trade hope, earnings kick into high gear
The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq reached new heights throughout the last week. (EPA Images pic) NEW YORK : Wall Street futures edged higher today, buoyed by prospects of trade deals between the US and its key partners, while the earnings season picked up pace with several industrial and tech firms set to report this week. Futures tracking the S&P 500 rose 16.5 points, or 0.26% at 5.51am, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis climbed 65 points, or 0.28%, hovering near all-time highs hit last week. Dow e-minis rose 110 points, or 0.25%. Investors scoured for more trade deals ahead of President Donald Trump's Aug 1 tariff deadline. He threatened to impose a 30% tariff on imports from Mexico and the EU after weeks of negotiations with the major US trading partners failed to reach a comprehensive deal. Trump has sent letters to other trading partners, including Canada, Japan and Brazil, setting blanket tariff rates ranging from 20% to 50%. Commerce secretary Howard Lutnick's remarks yesterday, however, offered some optimism as he expressed confidence over striking a trade deal with the EU. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq reached new heights throughout the last week as investors largely overlooked Trump's shifting tariff rhetoric in favour of stronger economic data and a solid start to the earnings season. The blue-chip Dow was 1.64% away from its all-time high. Of the 59 S&P 500 companies that have reported quarterly earnings this season, 81.4% have surpassed Wall Street's earnings expectations, compared with a long-term average of 67.1%, according to LSEG data as of Friday. All eyes will be on marquee companies such as Alphabet and Tesla later this week, as they kick off earnings for the so-called 'Magnificent Seven' stocks, which could influence the overall trajectory of Wall Street. Shares of Tesla and Alphabet were up 1.4% and 0.8% in premarket trading, respectively. Meanwhile, Verizon edged up 0.7% ahead of its results. The week is light on the economic data front, with only notable indicators being weekly jobless claims figures and the July business activity report on Thursday. Federal Reserve (Fed) chair Jerome Powell's comments tomorrow will be closely watched for clues on the central bank's future monetary policy stance. Traders have largely ruled out a July rate cut, and are pricing in an about 60% chance of a September reduction, as per CME Group's FedWatch tool. Ethereum-linked companies Bitmine Immersion Technologies, Gamesquare Holdings, BTCS and Sharplink Gaming advanced between 4.2% and 10.1% as Ether traded near its highest level this year after Trump signed into law a bill regulating stablecoins in the US.
