Celtic could 'renew interest' in Evan Ferguson as transfer hijack follows Yamada hint and Ambrosino U turn

Daily Record11 hours ago
The striker looks set to make a move to Roma from Brighton - but the Hoops' striker search could change that
Evan Ferguson could reportedly face a last-minute decision over a move to Roma if Celtic"renew their interest" in the Brighton misfit.
The 20-year-old has been touted with a Parkhead loan move to kickstart his season after netting just one Premier League goal for the Seagulls last season - and failing to make his mark at West Ham on loan during the second half of the season.

But reports in Italy suggest a season-long loan switch to Serie A is on the cards with Roma set to pay the Ireland international's full annual salary of around €1.8 million (£1.5million).

However, The Sunday Times now report that Ferguson could "have second thoughts" over a move "should the Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers, renew his interest."
Shin Yamada looks set to become the next new face in the door for Celtic after reports in Japan claimed a £1.5million switch from Kawaski Frontale had received the green light.
It is claimed the 25-year-old will jet into Scotland following his international commitments with Japan at the E-1 Championship.
And while remaining coy over a potential transfer to Glasgow's east end, the forward has hinted that he would be open to moving to Europe to improve his shot of appearing at the World Cup.
He told Japanese media:"I want to show my difference in terms of goals and in the way I fight. I think the competition will be fierce, and I feel that there is little time if that is for Kawaski or overseas.
"I'm pushing forward a lot in preparation for the World Cup, but I think there will be times when I'm pushed back, so I think I can make a difference by connecting goals to those, so I hope I can do that."

Napoli ' striker Giuseppe Ambrosino is also attracting interest from Serie A new boys Cremonese and the Scottish Premiership champions this summer.
The Hoops have been tracking Ambrosino, who found the target for Italy U21s in their European Championship quarter final defeat to Germany.
But after impressing at the tournament, Gazzetta r eport that the Scudetto winners are now considering giving the 21-year-old a chance in pre-season.
It is said that Antonio Conte is keen to show "trust in the Napoli system" before making a final decision on a departure.

Brazil's Marta weighs motherhood against 2027 World Cup dream

July 13 (Reuters) - Brazil's 39-year-old forward Marta said it was 'too early to tell' whether she would play in her home 2027 World Cup, as the six-time FIFA Women's Player of the Year considers balancing her dream of becoming a mother with extending her career. Marta told Globo's Esporte Espetacular on Sunday that while playing in the tournament remains a possibility, her desire to have a child could ultimately decide her future. "I don't know whether I'll still be playing in 2027 or whether I'll be fit," Marta said. "It's too early to say that I'm definitely going to play, I still have a very strong desire to be a mother. So, I might wake up one day and decide to call my doctor to see if it's still possible. If it is, then bye, I have to go," she added. The veteran forward, who has played in six World Cups without winning the title, added that, regardless of her participation, she hopes Brazil will have a memorable tournament. "I hope that Brazil can uphold its tradition of throwing a beautiful party, enjoying the moment and welcoming people warmly. This competition is unique for our continent and South America." With her contract with the National Women's Soccer League side Orlando Pride running until 2026, Marta is currently focusing on helping Brazil win the Copa America. "Brazil is the favourite, and we know it. We know our responsibility to bring home the title. But it's no use just being the favourite if you don't perform and make things happen on the pitch," she added. Brazil, in Group B, will kick off their Copa America campaign against Venezuela on Sunday, seeking their ninth title.

Live England vs Wales: Lionesses name unchanged lineup for Women's Euro 2025 clash

A very predictable team for England as Sarina Wiegman names an unchanged side to the one that thrashed the Netherlands in their second group game. Wales will have been expecting that to be the case - as we all were given how well the Lionesses played in Zurich - but whether they are able to do anything to stop them is another matter. This is a tricky game for England, though, as they have not delivered two good performances in a row since the World Cup two years ago. The worry is they will under-estimate Wales and fall into bad habits. It would be dangerous to assume anything against an opponent who will dine out of the memory of beating you in any game for years to come - let alone one that would knock their old rivals out of a major tournament. It was interesting to hear Wiegman openly talking about trying to make sure her players do not get into an arm wrestle with the Welsh. England have the better players and if they perform they will be too good for tonight's opponents. They do not want to get involved in a scrap tonight, they just need to play as they know they can and the goals will, eventually, come. But football is a brilliant game because it can be unpredictable. Wales can frustrate England, they can look to rough them up and generally irritate them in the hope it leads to a loss of concentration and a mistake. Imagine if Wales can snatch a goal and take the lead tonight. Suddenly the whole atmosphere inside the stadium will change and England will suddenly feel under pressure.

Liverpool pay emotional tribute to Diogo Jota at Preston friendly

Sunday's pre-season friendly at Deepdale was originally envisaged as a day to kick-start preparations for Liverpool's Premier League title defence, but it played out as a memorial service for Jota and his brother Andre Silva, 10 days after they died in a car accident in Spain. On the pitch Liverpool eased to a 3-1 win through goals from Conor Bradley, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo but thoughts of Jota and Silva remained at the forefront throughout the day. It began with a beautiful performance of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' by Claudia Rose Maguire, wife of former Preston player Sean, before kick-off. As Maguire sang Liverpool's anthem, Preston captain Ben Whiteman walked the length of the pitch to lay a wreath in front of the visiting fans, with the Bill Shankly Kop dominated by banners and scarves bearing Jota's name. Liverpool supporters sung the first of many renditions of their Jota chant 20 minutes before kick-off. When they rose to sing it again 20 minutes into the match, marking the squad number that Liverpool retired this week, supporters in all four stands at Deepdale rose to their feet to join the applause. Mohamed Salah, captain of a young Liverpool side that started the game, looked visibly moved by the moment as an image of the brothers – together at Porto in their youth – was shown on the big screen inside the stadium. And when Nunez scored Liverpool's second early in the second half, he delivered two of Jota's celebrations – first the shark gesture Jota gave when he scored against Everton at Goodison Park, then another imitating playing video games. Liverpool have been in mourning since the news of Jota's death came early on the morning of July 3, only 11 days after the 28-year-old father of three had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso. Several Liverpool players attended his funeral in Portugal last Saturday, with others at a memorial that took place in midweek. Players were allowed extra time to report back for pre-season as a result. There had been question marks over whether this fixture would go ahead, but in an interview published on Liverpool's website on Sunday morning, Arne Slot said: 'We are a football club and we need to train and we need to play again, if we want it or not.' 'We'll always carry him with us" ❤️ Arne Slot with a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota. — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 13, 2025 The grieving process will continue, but this felt an important step as a match that might otherwise have been about their new signings – Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong came off the bench after Giorgi Mamardashvili started in goal – became a moment to play in honour of the memory of Jota and Silva. Bradley opened the scoring in the 34th minute, prodding in at the back post after neat work from Rio Ngumoha and Federico Chiesa, and half-time substitute Nunez pounced on a mistake from Jordan Storey to score the second eight minutes into the second half. Eight minutes from time Preston substitute Liam Lindsay headed past his former team-mate Freddie Woodman, who joined Liverpool from North End at the start of the month, but it felt right for Liverpool to have the final say through Gakpo.
