Milan mayor placed under investigation in property planning probe

MILAN - The mayor of Milan has been placed under investigation, three sources said on Thursday, caught up in a probe into the dealings that have helped to underpin a real estate boom in Italy's financial capital over the last 10 years.
The investigation into Mayor Beppe Sala comes after prosecutors on Wednesday sought the arrest of Milan's councillor for urban planning, the head of real estate firm Coima and four others.
According to three sources with knowledge of the matter, Mayor Sala, who heads a centre-left coalition in the city, is among dozens of people under investigation.
He is accused of concealing a conflict of interest relating to the appointment of a chairman of a municipal commission that grants building permits. He is also allegedly among those who put pressure on that same chairman to unblock the authorisation of a building project in the city.
His spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
The probe on the mayor was first reported by three Italian newspapers.
In a comment published by Corriere della Sera newspaper on Thursday, Sala denied any wrongdoing and said he found it "shocking that the mayor should learn from a newspaper that he is under investigation and not from prosecutors. It is unacceptable".
The scandal risks embarrassing Milan as the city prepares to co-host the 2026 Winter Olympics next February.
The ruling centre-right parties, who govern at national level under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, have called for Sala's resignation.
Two of the sources specified that the investigations into the mayor's position are still in their early stages and are not close to any conclusion, expressing regret that the news had become public.
The Milan property market began flourishing in 2015, when the Expo international exhibition helped to transform the city into a hot spot for developers from Italy and abroad, reshaping its skyline.
But complaints from local residents objecting to a sharp increase in the number of multi-storey buildings triggered investigations into alleged abuses in the fast-tracking of building permits, stalling construction activity.
According to court documents, prosecutors said investigations related to the largest urban planning projects in Milan, "have brought to light a 'system'...whose purpose is to facilitate the issuance of illegal building permits and to carry out highly speculative real estate transactions". REUTERS

South Africa, under its presidency's motto "Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability", has aimed to promote an African agenda, with topics including the high cost of capital and funding for climate change action. Delegates at the meeting sought to agree lines on global economic challenges, including the uncertainty created by trade tensions, as well as wording on climate finance. Two delegates said the challenge was establishing what language Washington would accept, a task made harder by the absence of U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent from the two-day meeting. Bessent skipped February's Cape Town gathering as well, which several officials from China, Japan and Canada also did not attend, even though Washington is due to assume the G20 rotating presidency in December. Bessent's absence was not ideal, but the U.S. had been engaging in discussions on trade, the global economy and climate language, said a G20 delegate, who asked not to be named. Finance ministers from Brazil, China, India, France and Russia also missed the Durban meeting, though South Africa's Central Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago said what mattered was that all G20 countries were represented. In opening remarks on Thursday, South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said the G20 had a critical role to reinforce rules-based cooperation and drive collective action on global challenges that no country could solve alone. PSA Singapore celebrates SG60 with container display tribute at Tanjong Pagar Terminal

SINGAPORE - Port operator PSA Singapore announced on July 18 a container display to commemorate the nation's upcoming birthday, and also as a tribute to Singapore's maritime history. Made up of 271 containers from 14 shipping lines, the colourful display says 'SG60 (heart symbol)' and 'PSA (heart symbol) SG' and was assembled by PSA at the Tanjong Pagar Terminal over 32 hours. The port operator said in a statement that the display, measuring 57m by 101m by 14.6m, will be lit every night from July 25 to Aug 13 at Singapore's first container terminal, which opened in 1972. 'Beyond its visual impact, the display also symbolises PSA's strong and enduring partnership with its customers and stakeholders across the maritime and supply chain ecosystem,' PSA said in the statement. Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow referenced the tribute in a July 18 Facebook post, calling the display 'a lovely way to wrap up a big week for the Ministry of Transport as the Global Aviation and Maritime Symposium comes to an end'. This is not the first time the port operator has come up with a container display to mark a milestone. A certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records was also officially presented to PSA at the terminal. Besides the SG60 container display, PSA will hold a charity walk and run on July 25, in support of Care Corner, among other activities in celebration of Singapore's 60th birthday. The memorandum cited "divisive rhetoric" used by Adams, and characterised his postings as insensitive towards Malaysia's multi-cultural society. Malaysia, which has a majority of mostly Muslim ethnic Malays alongside significant ethnic Chinese and ethnic Indian minorities, has long been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause.
