
Israeli drone strike hits South Lebanon, civilian killed
The Health Ministry confirmed one civilian was killed in the attack on the main road in Maaroub, Tyre District.

Pope Leo XIV offers support after Iraq fire tragedy
Shafaq News – Baghdad/Vatican Pope Leo XIV has assured victims of a shopping centre fire in Iraq of his 'spiritual solidarity', expressing his closeness especially to those injured in the tragedy and to the families of those who lost loved ones. A telegram signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin says the Holy Father 'commends the souls of the deceased to the loving mercy of the Almighty, and offers his prayers for the emergency personnel who continue to provide assistance', while invoking on all 'the divine blessings of strength, consolation, and peace.' At least 69 people were killed when a fire broke out in a new shopping centre in the Iraqi city of Kut in Wasit Province in eastern Iraq. Eleven others have been reported missing. The mall, which had opened just five days earlier, included a hypermarket and restaurant, where people were shopping and dining when the fire broke out. Civil defence teams rescued 45 people from inside the building. In a statement, the governor of Wasit said, 'A tragedy and a calamity have befallen us,' and announced a three-day period of mourning. The statement said an investigation into the fire has been launched, with results promised within 48 hours. Lawsuits have already been filed against the owner of the building and the mall.

Iraq cracks down on unsafe businesses
2025-07-19T12:34:27+00:00 Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq's Interior Ministry launched a nationwide crackdown Saturday on unlicensed and unsafe commercial centers, days after the July 17 Kut hypermarket fire in Wasit province that killed nearly 70 people, including women and children. Speaking at a press conference from Karbala Operations Command ahead of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the world's largest religious gatherings, Interior Ministry Spokesman Colonel Abbas al-Bahadli vowed legal accountability for those linked to the tragedy, stating, 'The names and affiliations of those involved will be made public. No one is above the law—even the powerful will face justice.' He noted that investigators have identified initial suspects, though the final report is still pending, pointing out that security forces have begun sweeping inspections nationwide, shutting down shopping centers and retail outlets that lack permits or fail to meet fire safety standards. In Baghdad, Major General Hassan Ibrahim Hassan, head of Civil Defense in al-Rusafa district, confirmed the closure of over 1,300 businesses for fire code violations. 'We've banned flammable sandwich panels and started audits of government buildings,' he noted. 'Both the Prime Minister [Mohammed Shia al-Sudani] and Interior Minister [Abdul Amir Al-Shammari] have directed all agencies to strictly follow civil defense rules.'
