'Good Morning Angels' secure R2.7 million for burn care technology
The fundraising took place on Youth Day, 16 June, during the popular Breakfast with Martin Bester show.
The goal was to replace a specialised laser machine at the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in Johannesburg.
The machine is essential for treating burn scars in children, but broke down in late 2024 and cannot be repaired.
These advanced laser machines cost around R1.4 million each. The machines are vital for restoring mobility and reducing scarring caused by burns, according to Media Update .
Trained plastic surgeons operate the machines, which play a crucial role in the physical and psychological healing of young burn survivors.
The Avela Foundation will use the funds to help up to 40 children every month on their recovery journey.
A brave young girl named Avela inspired the foundation, which focuses on offering hope and healing to child burn survivors across South Africa.
Listeners of Jacaranda FM responded generously, reaching the target for one machine just before 8 a.m. Donations continued to pour in after that.
When the supplier offered a discount on a second machine for R1.3 million, the station set a new challenge.
By the end of the show, R2.52 million had been raised, and the final total reached R2.7 million the next morning.
This means two laser machines will be purchased, doubling the impact of the fundraiser for burn victims.
Martin Bester, host of the Breakfast show, expressed his gratitude. 'It's hard to describe the emotion in the studio that morning. Knowing that our listeners didn't just show up, they showed up big.
This was about giving children their futures back.
We started Youth Day, celebrating the resilience of our young people, and ended it knowing hundreds more will get the chance to heal.
That's what radio can do – it connects people and inspires miracles'.
The campaign also received significant support from LottoStar, whose donation of R697,000 helped reach the first target early and motivated others to continue giving.
The Machi Filotimo Cancer Project also contributed, supporting the campaign for burn victims and bringing joy to young patients at the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital through a toy distribution.
This initiative showcases the power of collective generosity and the commitment of South Africans to uplift the next generation.
It stands as a fitting tribute to the courage of child burn survivors and the transformative role of community-driven efforts like Jacaranda FM's Good Morning Angels.

Charity Is Not a Privilege, It's an Obligation at LottoStar
At LottoStar, we go beyond life-changing wins – we believe in making a real difference. Our greatest victories are the ones that uplift lives, restore dignity and ignite hope across our communities. Through LottoStar's purpose-driven campaigns and heartfelt initiatives, we've been able to uplift communities and support vital causes across the country. Whether in partnership with leading radio stations or through our dedicated foundation, The Star Foundation, every effort reflects our mission to make a difference. Here's how your support helped us bring that mission to life over the past three months: Save7 – When One Life Ends, Seven More Begin Through the Money Madness competition with KFM, LottoStar players helped raise R1,067,500 for Save7, an organisation that is redefining the landscape of organ donation in South Africa. Save7 doesn't just raise awareness – it transforms it into action. Through innovative initiatives like the Time Capsule, a voice note that allows individuals to leave heartfelt messages for their loved ones about their wishes to be donors, Save7 humanizes the donor journey and gives families peace of mind. The funds raised went towards the LifePod, a dedicated ICU designed for organ donors. This specialised unit provides essential care in the final moments, ensuring that one life can go on to save up to seven others. Because of you, more lives will be saved, more families reunited and more futures restored. Good Morning Angels – From Compassion to Cure During LottoStar's Fortune Frenzy competition with Jacaranda FM, our players helped raise R1,024,000 for Good Morning Angels – a Jacaranda FM initiative that has long been a lifeline for South Africans in crisis. From individuals facing hardship to families navigating trauma and communities in need of urgent help, Good Morning Angels has been a consistent source of relief and resilience. R697,000, part of the money raised, enabled the purchase of a cutting-edge laser treatment machine for the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital, offering care to young burn victims. The remaining funds are being channeled into ongoing projects supported by Good Morning Angels, continuing the cycle of care and compassion across the nation. These stories aren't just about aid. They're about recovery, dignity, and renewed hope. Groote Schuur Hospital – Emergency Care Without Delay One of the most urgent needs facing public hospitals in South Africa is access to emergency surgical care. In response, LottoStar donated R1.8 million to Groote Schuur Hospital's Emergency Fund for Emergency Surgery (EFES). This project addresses the hospital's overburdened emergency surgery schedule. Many patients admitted are victims of violence, severe trauma, or road accidents. Although the hospital is deeply committed to providing urgent care, resource constraints often cause delays – delays that can cost lives. Through LottoStar's donation, Groote Schuur will be able to run 70 additional emergency theatre lists over the next 12 months, with a focus on peak periods like weekends and public holidays when trauma admissions surge. The Star Foundation – Built on the Belief That We Rise by Lifting Others At the heart of all our initiatives lies The Star Foundation, LottoStar's dedicated platform for social impact. It's through this foundation that we identify urgent needs, partner with purpose-led organisations and drive measurable change across South Africa. From healthcare and education to food security and emergency relief, The Star Foundation is guided by one principle: when we uplift others, we uplift the nation. None of this would be possible without the support of our players. To our partners, players, and communities: thank you for believing in the power of purpose. Thank you for helping us turn games into giving and winnings into something far more meaningful. LottoStar – charity is a privilege, not an obligation.

Boy (6) from Leandra suffers from a femoral hernia and urgently needs surgery
Boy (6) from Leandra suffers from a femoral hernia and urgently needs surgery A BackaBuddy account has been created for six-year-old Janco Hanekom, who urgently requires surgery for a femoral hernia caused by testicular torsion. Testicular torsion occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot or opening in the surrounding muscle or tissue. If left untreated, it can cause irreversible damage. In June 2024, Janco was treated for two abscesses in his mouth. Two days after treatment, his left testicle began to swell and moisture accumulated. 'He was given medication to reduce the swelling, but the doctor warned us it could return and now it has,' said his mother, Nadia Hanekom. She explained the only way to treat Janco's condition is through surgery to drain the hernia and repair the affected tube. 'If the operation is delayed or unsuccessful, it could affect his ability to conceive children as an adult,' she said. The family is not on medical aid and the procedure could cost about R35 000. 'There are government hospitals, but as his mother, I feel his future depends on this surgery and I cannot take that risk,' said Hanekom. She prefers a specialist urologist experienced with such conditions. Hanekom also shared her difficult experience with government hospitals when her own mother fell ill with emphysema. She had to leave work to care for her mother, who sadly passed away on June 23. Her husband AJ is self-employed and the family's sole provider. 'My hands are tied. There is no money for further medical consultations for Janco,' she said. ALSO CHECK: Lekwa's electrical issues in the spotlight The family has reached out to Jacaranda FM's Good Morning Angels, and relatives and friends are sharing Janco's BackaBuddy campaign to raise funds. The campaign can be found at 'Janco is a farm boy, rough and always busy. He doesn't sit still. To keep him calm, she fixed an old cellphone for him to play with. The slightest bump or wrong movement could cause serious damage. We try to keep him as still as possible,' said Hanekom. Janco is a Grade R learner at Laerskool Goedehoop. 'We have explained to him that if he hurts his testicle while playing, it could burst. He loves riding his bike but can't anymore because of the pressure it puts on his testicle. He can't even wear underpants due to the discomfort,' said his mother. The swollen testicle causes him continuous pain and discomfort. The family asks the public to support Janco by donating or sharing his BackaBuddy campaign to spread the word and help save his future. Mark Davies, the CEO of PHP, said, 'At a pivotal time for our sector, PHP has delivered a strong operational and financial performance driven by rental growth across our portfolio, a value-accretive acquisition in Ireland, valuation gains and another period of dividend growth." He said the improving rental growth outlook and a stabilisation of our property yields at 5.25% signal that the group had moved through a key inflexion point in the property cycle with a very encouraging outlook ahead. 'The 10-year Health Plan which was published on 3 July 2025 is clearly positive for PHP. We welcome the Government's commitment to strengthening the NHS, particularly its emphasis on shifting more services to modern primary care facilities embedded in local communities. This plays directly to our strengths and our long-standing partnerships across the NHS give us a strong foundation to support this transition and deliver value to our shareholders," he said. Talking about the recent takeover offer, he said PHP continues to believe in the compelling strategic and financial rationale for the recommended combination with Assura plc, saying that the transaction is expected to be earnings accretive for both sets of shareholders. PHP had secured strong support for the transaction from PHP shareholders at its general meeting on July 12 with over 99% of voting shareholders approving the proposed combination. Davies said this is a clear endorsement of the company's ability to deliver a financially beneficial transaction that is strategically valuable, supported by an expected strong investment grade credit rating that will deliver future value to shareholders and underpin the droup's progressive dividend policy. 'Since the announcement of the Assura plc recommendation, we've continued discussions with third party investors on forming a joint venture, which is expected to include the private hospital portfolio, as part of our deleveraging strategy. Conversations are ongoing with a range of highly- credible investors and we remain confident in our ability to conclude a transaction in a timely manner post completion," he said. BUSINESS REPORT
