Stressfree victory proves enjoyable for O'Meara

Rhyl Journal5 days ago

David O'Meara's five-year-old only had three victories to his name on the Flat before this, which does not reflect the level of his ability, and looked to have a mountain to climb as Kildare Legend kicked clear off the front.
But Danny Tudhope timed it to perfection on the 11-2 shot to win by a neck and the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap now beckons.
O'Meara said: 'He wasn't winning out of turn, he's been very consistent. He's got a lot of ability, but he's often the bridesmaid. We sent him hurdling through the winter, more to toughen him up than anything.
'He was given an excellent ride. I'm never confident with him as he's often come out second best, but to be fair he did nothing wrong today.
'He could go for the mile-and-a-half handicap at Ascot and possibly the Ebor later, why not, he might stay that far, he keeps a little bit back.'
The big summer showpiece could also be on the cards for Mick Appleby's Kodi Lion (5-1) following a clear-cut win in the Betfred Supports Jack Berry House Reverence Handicap.
Bought out of Ed Walker's yard for 90,000 guineas, he will need to step up in trip should he go following a length win over six furlongs, but he does have form over seven.
'It's quite emotional, my dad died four years ago today so he's definitely looking down,' said Liz Cash, who owns the horse together with her mother.
'If he goes up enough in the weights we'll look at the seven-furlong race (Buckingham Palace) at Ascot.'
Ed Bethell's Oolong Poobong (4-1) was cheered home by a raucous crowd to win the Betfred 'Join Our Sports Club' Fillies' Handicap, while Martyn Meade saddled just his second winner of the year when Organ (9-1) prevailed in the Betfred 'Join Our Sports Club' Fillies' Handicap.

Charlie Appleby has rain worries for Derby favourite Ruling Court

The Godolphin trainer saddles the 2,000 Guineas winner at Epsom but rain has arrived at the Surrey track where showers are forecast through Friday and Saturday Charlie Appleby has rain worries ahead of Ruling Court's attempt to complete the 2,000 Guineas-Derby double. The colt heads the betting for the £1.5 million Betfred Derby after capturing the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. A Derby victory would put him on a path to the Triple Crown, for which Betfred are offering a £2 million bonus if the St Leger is also landed. He faces 19 runners, the biggest field since 2003, and is rated by jockey William Buick as the best horse in the race. ‌ However ground conditions at Epsom could be much different to Newmarket where the going was good, with good to firm patches in the final furlong, according to clerk of the course Andrew Cooper. ‌ READ MORE: The Derby tips: full field, horse by horse guide, latest odds and 1-2-3 prediction for Epsom 'This will be my 30th Derby as Clerk of the Course and I have never known such a prolonged dry period from March through to April and into May,' he said 'Here and now, if we were racing at Epsom Downs at this moment, I would have a straightforward call of Good on the ground. That follows 3.5mm of rain on Tuesday afternoon which was kind of forecast.' Another 4.4mm of rain had fallen at the track up to 11.15am on Thursday but more could arrive on Friday and Saturday. 'We could have two quite showery days on Friday and Saturday. Saturday in particular has the potential to have some heavy showers but we will see. 'We all know in this game the volume of rain on a raceday, when you are racing over ground, it doesn't take lots to shift things and you are relying very much on jockeys' opinions as to how it's riding. ‌ 'I can't see any scenario at present where we would be quicker than Good come Saturday and I think there is every indication that we are going to be on the slower side to some degree through the two days.' That might not be good news for supporters of Ruling Court, despite having trained well since his Guineas triumph. ‌ Appleby said: 'We wouldn't want the ground to get too soft by Saturday, so any significant amount of rain would be a negative. 'We won't know if he truly gets a mile and a half until we try, but he gives us all the indications that he should get the trip. We know that he is the class horse in the field, which helps, and being able to travel around Epsom is probably more important than being a proper mile-and-a-half horse. 'We can have no complaints with being drawn seven and are very pleased with how his preparation has gone. He is an exciting Derby contender, for sure.'

‘I don't think there's any negative and he's impressed me the most' – Frankie Dettori's Derby tip

IF you want to find the winner of the Derby then you could do a lot worse than ask two-time winner Frankie Dettori. The world's most famous jockey ended his agonising wait to win it in 2007 with Authorized. Advertisement 1 Frankie Dettori, won the Derby twice, reckons there's one horse who stands head and shoulders above the rest in this year's race Credit: PA:Press Association And he crowned himself King of Epsom one more time in 2015 aboard the awesome Golden Horn. No one knows the undulations of the Downs better than Frankie - or what it takes to win on it. And one horse in particular this season has impressed him above all others. Asked who he would back in the £1.5million contest, Dettori went against old employers Godolphin and John Gosden. Advertisement And instead plumped for a British trainer to keep his awesome big race-winning run going. Ralph Beckett won the Arc de Triomphe last year with wondermare Bluestocking. Dettori - who recently issued a big career update amid his bankruptcy storm - reckons he can scoop the British equivalent this year with Dante winner Pride Of Arras. The iconic jockey told Stake: "Pride Of Arras won in the style of a Derby winner in the Dante. Advertisement "The only thing that might muddle him is the size of the field. "It is close to a maximum field and he's only run twice, so it won't be easy. "He'll have to manage his way through the traffic. He does have a good cruising speed, though, and a good turn of foot. "He's the one which has impressed me the most in the Derby trials. Advertisement "It's just the lack of experience which disadvantages him. It's very hard to win this race on only your third start, so that's the one thing which puts me off a bit. "Ruling Court is a serious horse. What he showed in the Guineas was very impressive, but it's that massive question mark, will he get a mile and a half? "We know that a mile and quarter is within his reach because he hit the line very strongly at Newmarket, but this is another two furlongs. "He's an amazing, talented horse, but he's got a massive question mark to me. Advertisement "Damysus looks a very solid horse, but to me Pride Of Arras was much better than him in the Dante and we expect him to improve a bit here, so the gap is looking a bit too far to bridge to me. "Pride Of Arras would be the one I'd put my fiver on. "It's a very exciting race and it is wide open. We've already made a case for a good number of them, and it's very interesting." Dettori also had strong word for Ryan Moore's mount Delacroix. Advertisement However, his draw in 14 has sparked a market drift as money comes for 2,000 Guineas hero Ruling Court instead. Betfred have the two joint-favourites, while Ladbrokes continue to cut Charlie Appleby's Godolphin colt. The firm's Alex Apati said: "We could be on course for a significant shake-up in the Derby betting over the next few days. "Despite Ryan Moore being on board the favourite, punters' recent interest is seemingly elsewhere. Advertisement "We may well be looking at a new frontrunner in the field come Saturday afternoon."
