Vikram Misri calls for early convening of India-US strategic trade talks
The two officials also discussed the early convening of the India-US Strategic Trade Dialogue, to further strengthen bilateral collaboration in the technology and trade sectors.
Sharing a post on X, the Indian Embassy in Washington wrote, "Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Under Secretary Jeffrey Kessler to advance India-US cooperation in critical and emerging technologies. They also discussed early convening of the India-US Strategic Trade Dialogue to deepen tech and trade collaboration."
Misri is currently in the United States for a three-day visit, scheduled from May 27 to 29, during which he will meet with senior administration officials to discuss key areas of bilateral cooperation.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs statement, Misri's visit to Washington DC follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US in February this year, when both nations launched the India-US COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century.
MEA stated, "Foreign Secretary Shri Vikram Misri will be visiting Washington, D.C., USA from 27-29 May 2025 to meet senior officials of the US Administration. The visit is a follow up to Prime Minister's visit to the United States in February 2025, when both sides had launched the India-U.S. COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century."
India and the US bolstered their ties during PM Modi's two-day visit with a series of initiatives across several sectors.
US President Donald Trump and PM Modi launched a new initiative -'US-India COMPACT for the 21st Century' - to drive transformative change across key pillars of cooperation.
This was PM Modi's first visit to the US since President Donald Trump's inauguration of his second presidential term in January. PM Modi is among the first few world leaders to visit the United States following the inauguration of Trump and was invited to visit the US within barely three weeks of the new administration.

Google Fined $36 Million in Australia for Anti-Competitive Deals with Telcos
Google has agreed to pay a hefty fine of A$55 million (US$35.8 million) in Australia after the country's consumer watchdog found the tech giant engaged in anti-competitive practices by paying leading telecommunications firms to favour its search engine. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced on Monday that Google's arrangements with Telstra and Optus — the nation's two largest telcos — gave it an unfair advantage over rival search providers. Between late 2019 and early 2021, Google struck deals that ensured its search app was pre-installed on Android smartphones sold through these carriers. In exchange, the telcos received a share of advertising revenue generated from Google Search. The regulator said such agreements effectively sidelined competitors, reducing the chances for alternative search engines to reach millions of Australian consumers. Google has since admitted the arrangements had a 'substantial impact on competition' and confirmed that it no longer signs such deals. ACCC Chair Gina-Cass Gottlieb welcomed the outcome, emphasizing its importance for consumer choice. 'Today's outcome … created the potential for millions of Australians to have greater search choice in the future, and for competing search providers to gain meaningful exposure to Australian consumers,' she said. The penalty comes at a turbulent time for Google in Australia. Just last week, the company faced another legal setback when a court largely ruled against it in a case filed by Fortnite developer Epic Games. That lawsuit accused both Google and Apple of unfairly restricting competition by blocking rival app stores from operating on their platforms. Adding to its challenges, YouTube — also owned by Google's parent company Alphabet — was recently included in a national ban on social media platforms accessible to users under 16, overturning an earlier exemption for the video platform. While the A$55 million fine is yet to be confirmed by the Federal Court, the ACCC said the joint submission between the regulator and Google has prevented a drawn-out legal battle. A Google spokesperson said the company was satisfied with resolving the regulator's concerns. 'We are committed to providing Android device makers more flexibility to pre-load browsers and search apps, while preserving the offerings and features that help them innovate, compete with Apple, and keep costs low,' the spokesperson said. Telstra and Optus have both pledged not to enter into similar pre-installation agreements with Google. In a previous statement, Telstra confirmed it had fully cooperated with the ACCC's investigation, while Optus' parent company, Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), was not immediately available for comment. Although the fine marks a financial setback, the broader impact lies in how it reshapes the competitive landscape for digital search in Australia. Regulators say the outcome ensures a more level playing field for rivals while granting consumers greater freedom to choose their preferred search tools.

Goldman Sachs Opens New Office In Mumbai's Worli As Part Of Expansion In India
Last Updated: 'Our new Mumbai office is the next chapter in our multi-decade growth trajectory in India, underscoring the substantial opportunities we see in the market, says a company official. Goldman Sachs Group has opened a new office in Mumbai's Worli business district as part of its expansion in India, Bloomberg reported on Monday. The New York-headquartered investment bank said the new premises are around 50% larger than its previous location in the city, reflecting its growth ambitions in the world's fourth-largest economy. 'Our new Mumbai office is the next chapter in our multi-decade growth trajectory in India, underscoring the substantial opportunities we see in the market," Bloomberg quoted Kevin Sneader, the firm's Asia Pacific (ex-Japan) president, as saying. Global financial firms, including Wall Street lenders and private equity houses, have been increasing their presence in India amid growing opportunities in the country's financial sector. Goldman Sachs, which has been serving clients in India since the 1980s, operates its largest office outside the United States in the country, according to the report. Last week, US-based rating agency S&P Global also upgraded India's sovereign rating to 'BBB' after more than 18 years, citing strong economic fundamentals that are likely to support growth in the next two to three years. It also pointed out that monetary policy has become 'increasingly conducive to managing inflationary expectations". A day after, it also upgraded the ratings of India's 10 financial institutions, including seven Indian banks (SBI, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Union Bank of India, and Indian Bank) and three finance companies (Bajaj Finance, Tata Capital, and L&T Finance). view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
