Chinese job markets shiver as US-China trade talks fall cold
A breakthrough in
US-China trade talks
in Geneva has brought some hope for China's battered manufacturing sector, but the damage may have already wrecked many factory workers, as the job market remains tight.
Tensions in the trade war have relaxed, sparing Beijing from a potentially severe crisis, widespread job losses that could have threatened social stability, a cornerstone that has helped the Communist Party to retain power and legitimacy.
Dampened by the US tariff hikes of 145%, the Chinese economy continues to struggle, even after the trade talks, hurting the job market and slowing down the economy, Reuters reported.
Will tariff cut bring back the sentiment ?
While the talks have helped avert the crisis, challenges remain. A senior policy adviser close to the matter described the outcome as 'a win for China,' adding, 'factories will be able to restart operations and there will be no mass layoffs, which will help maintain social stability.'
However, with tariffs still standing at around 30%, on top of pre-existing duties, businesses remain cautious.

'It's difficult to do business at 30%,' the adviser said. 'Over time, it will be a burden on China's economic development.'
Before the Geneva meeting, signs of distress were evident. Beijing had grown alarmed at rising bankruptcy risks in labour-intensive sectors such as toys and furniture, according to sources cited by Reuters last week.
Lu Zhe, chief economist at Soochow Securities, estimated that the number of jobs at risk has fallen to below 1 million, down from a range of 1.5 to 6.9 million before the tariff cut.
Even so, Alicia Garcia-Herrero, chief Asia Pacific economist at Natixis, warned the threat hasn't vanished, predicting the current tariff levels could still lead to 4 to 6 million job losses. 'When you increase the tariffs to such a high level, many companies decide to stop hiring and to start basically sending the workers back home,' she said.
'At 30%, I doubt they will say, okay, come back.'
To cushion the impact, the Chinese government is stepping in with targeted investment and other measures.
Last week, the People's Bank of China unveiled a scheme to direct cheap funding toward service industries and elderly care, sectors seen as having potential to absorb displaced workers.
'On employment, the most important driver will come from increased government investment given that the enthusiasm for corporate investment has yet to rise,' said Jia Kang, president of the China Academy of New Supply-Side Economics.
Despite official efforts, the mood remains bleak on the ground. While Beijing may have avoided the worst-case scenario, for many, the scars of the tariff war are likely to linger far longer.

Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini urges citizens to follow Ahilyabai Holkar's legacy to realise PM Modi's vision of a developed India
1 2 Kurukshetra: Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday called on citizens to emulate the values of Ahilyabai Holkar by championing girls' education, gender equality, and social service — aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a developed India by 2047. Addressing a state-level event in Pipli, Kurukshetra, marking the 300th birth anniversary of the iconic Maratha queen, Saini described Ahilyabai as a symbol of woman power who shattered social barriers in an era that denied women education and autonomy. To honour her legacy, the CM announced the construction of a museum dedicated to Ahilyabai on a 2-acre site to educate youth about her life and contributions. He also pledged the creation of a ceremonial gateway in her name, to be located in a city or village with input from the Pal-Gaderia community. In support of community development, Saini committed ₹31 lakh from his discretionary fund for the Pal-Gaderia Dharamshala in Kurukshetra. State ministers and MPs, including Krishan Lal Panwar and Naveen Jindal, each pledged ₹11 lakh toward the initiative. Saini highlighted Ahilyabai's historic role in rebuilding major Hindu pilgrimage sites, including Kashi Vishwanath, Somnath, Mathura, Ayodhya, Badrinath, and Rameshwaram. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Elgin: If You Were Born Between 1940-1975 You Could Be Eligible For This Life Cover Reassured Get Quote Undo He noted that her statue was unveiled at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple by PM Modi in 2019. He also praised the leadership of Indian women in present-day security operations, referencing the recent Operation Sindoor and acknowledging the contributions of defence officers Vyomika Singh and Sophia Qureshi. Reaffirming his government's commitment to inclusive development, Saini spotlighted welfare programs under the 'Haryana Ek, Haryanvi Ek' banner. These include free monthly food rations to 49 lakh below-poverty-line families, over 15 lakh free LPG connections under the Ujjwala Yojana, and subsidised ₹500 gas cylinders. Healthcare efforts through the Ayushman Bharat-Chirayu scheme have enabled over 20 lakh patients — including senior citizens — to receive up to ₹5 lakh in free treatment. The Dayalu Yojana provides similar financial aid to low-income families in cases of death or disability. To support backward communities, the state has established a dedicated commission, increased the reservation quota to 27% in education and government jobs, and raised the creamy layer income cap from ₹6 lakh to ₹8 lakh. For girls, free schooling up to Year 12, scholarships, and waived university fees are in place. Marking World No Tobacco Day, Saini concluded with a public call to reject addiction and embrace health, values, and service. "Let us pledge today to root out substance abuse and build a stronger society," he said. MSID:: 121537738 413 |

Over 3,000 new vehicles hit Telangana roads daily as public transport takes backseat
Hyderabad: In the wake of inadequate public transport systems, poor last-mile connectivity, and commuters' preference for personal vehicles, Telangana is witnessing rapid growth in vehicle registrations, with the state recording more than 3,000 new private vehicles daily on its road network. According to data from the regional transport authority (RTA), Telangana added nearly one million vehicles to its roads over the past year. The total number of vehicles increased from 1.63 crore at the end of the 2023–24 financial year to 1.73 crore by March 31 this year. If that were not enough, the state has added as many as 30 lakh vehicles over the past four years. Of the total 1.73 crore vehicles, Greater Hyderabad accounts for half, with approximately 85 lakh vehicles. The city's vehicular population has seen massive growth, rising from 25 lakh vehicles twelve years ago. By 2018, private vehicles (two-wheelers and four-wheelers) had reached 50 lakh in the city, with the number of cars exceeding 10 lakh in the same year. "Telangana has been recording sustained growth in vehicle numbers over the years. The development of quality infrastructure, along with the state's emergence as a major IT hub, has facilitated this increase. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo With the city's expansion, there has also been significant migration. A few years ago, daily vehicle registrations stood at around 1,000, but these figures have steadily risen and now exceed 1,500 registrations per day in Hyderabad," said a senior RTA official. Traffic experts state that inadequate public transport and poor connectivity are fuelling the rise in private vehicle ownership. With the city's population reaching an estimated 1.2 crore, public transport serves less than one-third of the total population. Daily passenger data shows that RTC accommodates over 25 lakh commuters, the metro rail transports 5 lakh passengers, and SCR's MMTS operations cater to around 50,000 people each day. The remainder rely on private vehicles. "The increasing number of vehicles on the existing road infrastructure raises concerns about worsening traffic congestion. Furthermore, the surge in high-speed vehicles suggests a probable rise in accidents. Statistics indicate a consistent increase in road accidents across the state. Authorities should prioritise RTC buses on high-traffic routes to improve their efficiency and encourage the public to opt for public transport over private vehicles," said TS Reddy, a retired official from the central road research institute and transport planning expert.
