MCD internal polls on June 2: Ward panels, two standing committee members to be picked
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will hold elections on June 2 to fill two seats in its 18-member financial and policy-making Standing Committee, which fell vacant following the resignation of councillors upon being elected as MLAs in February.
The same day, elections for the post of chairperson and deputy chairperson of all 12 ward committees will also be held.
The two councillors who had been elected as MLAs represented wards 164 and 74 of MCD. They served as members of the MCD's standing committee from the South Zone Wards Committee and the City-SP Zone Wards Committee.
The elections to fill the two seats on the standing committee were scheduled to be held on May 21 but were postponed due to the military conflicts between India and Pakistan. The new date was announced on Monday, and elections will be held through a secret ballot.
During the previous ward committee polls, the AAP had secured five of the 12 zonal committees, with the rest going to the BJP.
However, the June 2 polls come in the wake of 15 councillors quitting AAP and forming an independent political outfit, called the Indraprastha Vikas Party.
With this new front, AAP's numbers in the MCD have been reduced to 98. While the BJP has 117 councillors at present, the Congress has eight.
The Standing Committee plays a key role in the civic body, with no proposal exceeding Rs 5 crore able to pass without its approval.
The new defections, which include the former Leader of the House in the MCD, Mukesh Goel, may now further complicate its position in the upcoming civic leadership contests.
This development came just weeks after the BJP regained control of the MCD by winning the mayoral elections, marking a critical reversal of fortunes after two years in opposition.

West Bengal bye-election: 30.6% voter turnout recorded in Kaliganj till 11am
Polling officials recorded a voter turnout of 30.6% till 11 am in the Kaliganj assembly seat bye-election as the process went on smoothly in the first half of the day in West Bengal's Nadia district on Thursday. The bye-election was necessitated due to the sudden demise of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed in February this year. Counting of votes will be held on June 23. 'Voting was going on peacefully with no reports of any untoward incidents,' said a poll panel official in West Bengal. While the ruling TMC has fielded Alifa Ahmed, daughter of the former MLA and an IT engineer by profession, the BJP has fielded Ashis Ghosh, a businessman, as its candidate. The Congress, meanwhile, has fielded Kabil Uddin Shaikh with the support of the CPI(M). Kaliganj has a Muslim voter population of around 54%, along with SCs (14%) and STs (0.42%). It is predominantly rural, with more than 90% rural and around 9% urban population, as per Census 2011. The TMC had first won the seat in 2011 after it came to power ending the 34-year-old Left regime when Nasiruddin Ahmed was elected. In 2016, he lost the seat to Congress-CPM alliance candidate Sheikh Hasanuzzaman. However, Hasanuzzaman later joined Trinamool. Nasiruddin reclaimed the Kaliganj seat in the 2021 Assembly polls. The seat fell vacant after his demise. The bye-election is being seen as a litmus test for both the ruling TMC and its arch rival the BJP ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

'Congenital Liar': BJP Hits Back After 'Triple Jhatka' Swipe By Congress Over Modi-Trump Phone Call
Last Updated: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said US President Donald Trump's invitation to Pakistan Field Marshal Asim Munir is a "setback for Indian diplomacy" Congress leader Jairam Ramesh's 'triple jhatka' swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, has triggered a social media war with the BJP accusing the senior politician of being a 'congenital liar – much like Rahul Gandhi". Addressing the phone conversation between Modi and Trump, Jairam Ramesh said the US President's invitation to Pakistan Field Marshal Asim Munir is a 'setback for Indian diplomacy" while the central government is 'quiet" over the issue. Field Marshall Asim Munir, the man whose inflammatory, incendiary and provocative remarks were linked directly to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attacks, is having lunch today with President Trump in the White House. Is this why President Trump abandoned the G7 Summit a day early…— Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) June 18, 2025 Expressing his discontent, Ramesh said there is a world of a difference between India's note (on the phone conversation) and the note by US. 'You are saying this, he said that…then why not call an all-party meeting?" he asked. The BJP's IT cell head, Amit Malviya, rebutted his claims on the US note. 'Jairam Ramesh is a congenital liar — much like Rahul Gandhi. He is now peddling yet another falsehood, claiming that Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's statement doesn't match the US readout – while dramatically waving his phone around. But here is the catch: the readout he is citing is from January 2025! And there is no official US release yet on the latest call," Malviya wrote on X. The de-escalation with Pakistan happened through DGMOs, and at Pakistan's own request, Congress must stop maligning India's firm and principled foreign policy just to feed its petty narratives," he added. 'Under Congress, India was seen as a weak, third-world country. Today, India is a rising power — a bright star in the global order. No amount of lies can dim that truth." Malviya said Ramesh is known for 'peddling fake narratives" and even people in his own party have admitted to the same. 'But this time, he has been caught with his hand in the till! Look closely till 1:40 PM — US Embassy spokesperson Christopher Elms clearly states there has been NO READOUT from the meeting. So here is the big question: If the US Embassy itself denied any readout, then where did Congress get their fake 'readout" from? Answer: They manufactured it out of thin air," he wrote in another post on X. Jairam Ramesh has long been known for peddling fake narratives — even many within his own party have admitted it openly. 'This isn't just a lie — it is a serious breach of diplomatic protocol. Congress falsely attributed statements to a foreign government. It actively tried to sabotage India's foreign policy efforts during a critical time. This is not politics — This is sabotage. This is treason. This is the Congress party," he added. ???????????? ???????????????????????????? ???????? ???????????????? ???????????? ???????????????????? – ???????? ???????????? ???????????????????????? ????????????????????. #PMModiAtG7 — BJP (@BJP4India) June 18, 2025 Earlier in the day, during their 35-minute conversation on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada, Modi briefed Trump on Operation Sindoor and firmly conveyed the message that India has never accepted and will never accept mediation on the issues with Pakistan. I have some differences of opinion with the Congress party: Shashi Tharoor
Synopsis Congress MP Shashi Tharoor acknowledged internal disagreements within the party, stating he'll address them internally later. His remarks on Operation Sindoor, made during a US visit as part of an all-party delegation, sparked criticism from Congress leaders like Pawan Khera and Jairam Ramesh. Udit Raj sarcastically suggested Tharoor join the BJP.
