Lidl to open new 'modern, expansive' NI store after nine-year plan
The new unit at Shan Slieve Drive and Bryansford Road at the foot of the hills will see the existing store at Railway Street in Newcastle town centre relocate after almost 25 years.
Occupying a site of 12,236 square metres, with sales floor space of 1,338 square metres, the site will also provide the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team the space it needs to develop a new facility.
Commenting on the first store opening in the region since taking up his new role as Regional Managing Director for Lidl Northern Ireland Gordon Cruikshanks said: "We have been serving the Newcastle community for the last 25 years from our former premises in Railway Street and our project to develop this brand-new store for the local area has been in planning for the last nine years.
"Newcastle is a thriving community and bustling seaside town attracting visitors from across the island of Ireland. With growing customer numbers in the area and more shoppers choosing to 'Go Full Lidl', we had long outgrown our original store so it's fantastic to now confirm a June opening for the new store.
'Shoppers will be able to enjoy a fully modern, expansive and spacious store, built with sustainability and longevity at the fore, with a few customisations making this a unique store in our portfolio.
'Beyond providing shoppers with the best customer experience in the town, we're looking forward to completing construction of the site to enable the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team to construct an upgraded new base for their services which are invaluable in this community.'
The new Lidl store will incorporate energy efficient features, including LED lighting, heat pumps and PV solar panels, thereby reducing carbon emissions.
Unique for the site is the retailer's first store with a 'living roof' - designed to 'blend seamlessly' with the store's backdrop set within the Mourne Mountains Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Parking for 147 vehicles as well as two electric vehicle charging points also feature in the build.
The £6.3m investment will see 15 new jobs added, bringing the total team employed at Lidl's Newcastle store to 37.
The project also saw over 200 jobs created as part of the planning and construction process.
The Newcastle store is the latest investment by Lidl Northern Ireland in the region, complementing new store opening in recent years in Boucher Road, Stewartstown, Carryduff and Coleraine.

Lidl to give equal shelf space to Scottish female brewers
Lidl is raising a glass to equality with the launch of the first ever gender-balanced beer aisle, giving equal shelf space to beers brewed by women and female-owned breweries. And it's Scottish brewers who are leading the charge, including Glasgow's WEST, Edinburgh's Stewart Brewing and Innis & Gunn, Dundee's 71 Brewing, Aberdeen's Fierce and the Highlands' Loch Lomond Brewing. Rolling out across 112 Scottish stores from Thursday 28 August, the move reflects a brewing industry that's in transformation, while paying tribute to its roots. Historically, beer-making was considered 'women's work'. In households across Scotland women brewed beer as a safer alternative to water. As brewing became commercialised, women's presence diminished, their contributions often limited to keeping breweries running during the World Wars or appearing in advertising - including the infamous Tennent's Lager Lovelies, where negligee-clad women adorned lager tins. Today, Lidl is writing a new chapter in the history of women in brewing, and paving the way for future generations too. Alongside its gender-balanced beer aisle, 50p from every beer sold in the retailer's Scottish Favourites line-up will fund the Lidl Scholarship at Heriot-Watt University's International Centre of Brewing and Distilling, supporting a female brewer to qualify at a commercial level. Female-brewed beers that will have proceeds donated to the Lidl Scholarship include flavoursome Scottish brews such as 71 Brewing's Peachy Radler (3% ABV), Fierce's Fancy Juice IPA (5%), Innis & Gunn's Tequila Cask Blonde (5.1% ABV) and Loch Lomond's Big Mango Sour, Orange & Passionfruit (8% ABV). Lidl's gender parity initiative is being marked with a striking 'pourtrait' - a unique photograph that celebrates the leadership, commitment and craft of six of the nation's leading female brewers. Mara Bäcker Scott, senior buying manager of Beer at Lidl GB, said: "This is a significant moment in retail history, and one we're incredibly proud to lead. "Lidl's mission has always been to deliver exceptional quality and value, and through our sourcing and supplier strategy we've had the privilege of working with brilliant women at the forefront of the craft beer scene. 'Women have been an integral part of beer-making for centuries, and today they bring extraordinary skill, creativity and quality to every stage of the process. "To be able to showcase that talent on our shelves, and know that every sale will help create the first-ever Lidl Scholarship for a future female brewer, is a moment we're thrilled to share with Lidl customers.' Craft beers brewed by women where 50p from each purchase will go towards the Lidl Scholarship include: Brewery Beer ABV Format Price 71 Brewing Radler Peachy 3% 440ml £1.59 71 Brewing Super Massive Black Hole Stout 7.2% 440ml £2.19 Stewart Brewing Jurassic Guava Infused Hazy IPA 5% 440ml £1.89 Stewart Brewing Fresh Hops of Bel-Air West Coast IPA 6.5% 440ml £1.99 WEST Velo Lemon Radler 2.7% 330ml £1.19 WEST Wild WEST Unfiltered Lager 4.9% 440ml £1.89 Fierce Dubai Chocolate Pistachio Stout 6.5% 440ml £1.99 Fierce Fancy Juice IPA 5% 440ml £1.89 Fierce Iron Brew Beer Cooler 4.5% 440ml £1.89 Innis & Gunn Lager Beer 4.6% 10 x 440ml £13.16 Innis & Gunn Ossian 4.1% 10 x 440ml £11.73 Innis & Gunn Tequila Cask Blonde 5.1% 330ml £1.59 Loch Lomond Big Mango Sour, Orange & Passionfruit 8% 440ml £2.29 Loch Lomond Silvereye NZ DDH Pale 4.7% 440ml £1.89 Find out more via the Lidl website here.

Morrisons is now taking in just £4million a week more than Lidl
Morrisons is now taking in just £4million a week more than Lidl – setting the scene for it to be overtaken by its discount rival. The beleaguered supermarket has already been elbowed out of the top four by Aldi and is close to being eclipsed by its other German budget rival. Industry figures yesterday revealed that Lidl is almost neck and neck with Morrisons after sales rose 10.7 per cent to just under £3billion in the 12 weeks to August 10. Sales at Morrisons were just £48million higher over the period having risen by only 0.9 per cent, according to the report by research group Worldpanel. And while Lidl's share of the market has jumped from 7.8 per cent to 8.3 per cent in the past year, Morrisons has seen its slice fall from 8.7 per cent to 8.4 per cent. Analysts said they are confident Lidl will overtake Morrisons in the coming weeks as it presses ahead with a rollout of new stores. Clive Black, retail analyst at Shore Capital, said: 'Lidl and Morrisons are neck and neck when it comes to UK market share.' 'The German discounter will take the lead in the near future because it is opening new stores while Morrisons is not and it has stronger underlying trading momentum,' Clive Black said. Lidl plans to open a total of 40 sites by the end of the year, and it seeks to reach 1,000 stores over the next few years. It also has a 'very strong private label that it has curated through single ownership with a long-term view for many years', Black added. Morrisons has lost sales and market share to rivals since its takeover by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice in a debt-fuelled £7billion deal in October 2021. Black said the takeover 'stopped decent pre-existing trading momentum and materially burdened the supermarket with debt servicing costs that have, in reality, starved the business of the resources necessary to allow it to compete more effectively'. After Labour piled on costs for retailers at the Budget last year, Morrisons cut more than 350 jobs in March.
