William Saliba demands step up from Arsenal in pursuit of overdue league title
Mikel Arteta has transformed the Gunners into regular title contenders in recent years, but they have been unable to turn their improvements into silverware. Arsenal have finished second for the past three seasons, finishing just shy of champions Manchester City in 2022-23 and 2023-24 before ending up 10 points behind last season's winners Liverpool. The near misses have made standout centre-back Saliba all the more determined to help the club win a first Premier League since the 2003-04 Invincibles, and a first major trophy since the 2020 FA Cup. A post shared by William Saliba (@ 'Of course we've finished second for three years in a row, and we know that we always miss something,' the Arsenal defender told the PA news agency. 'Now it's a new season, we have to see what we didn't do well enough to win the league. 'We won the first game and of course we want to win the league, and we will give everything. We have to try to be even better than the last three seasons to win this league. 'We know that the new players who came to help us, and I'm sure that they will help us to win some trophies. Of course we are already better with them. Let's see.' Saliba was speaking at the PFA Awards in Manchester, where on Sunday he helped Arsenal claim three points from their opening trip to Ruben Amorim's United. Riccardo Calafiori's header after Altay Bayindir flapped at a corner under pressure from Saliba secured a 1-0 win against the run of play at Old Trafford. 'We want to score in any context – set pieces, counter-attack, everything,' the France international said. A post shared by Arsenal (@arsenal) 'We have to give everything and we know that we can win every time. 'Of course we knew that we didn't play our best football, but at the end we knew that it was the first game at Old Trafford with some new signings from them. 'We knew that they will be good, and they were good. They caused us a lot of problems but, at the end, we are happy to win this game and to keep a clean sheet.' Saliba spoke having been named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for the third straight season – 'a pleasure' he again got to share with Arsenal team-mates Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhaes. The 24-year-old has struck up a fantastic defensive partnership with the latter during their time at the Emirates Stadium, but collective success rather than individual glory is the focus. 'I'm so happy to play every game with him,' Saliba said. 'He's been injured the last few months, now he's back at his best. He was so good against Manchester again. 'We just miss trophies. We play good, we are good, but we miss trophies, and we have to win trophies with Arsenal to be even better.'

Pool star Jayson Shaw and family cheat death as horror storm battered house and caused living room ceiling to collapse
STAR'S SHOCK Pool star Jayson Shaw and family cheat death as horror storm battered house and caused living room ceiling to collapse Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JAYSON SHAW is living in a hotel in the United States after a storm damaged his seven-bedroom home – and almost caused a family tragedy. Scotland's greatest nineball pool player is in Atlantic City this week for the $500,000 US Open, one of the key events on the calendar. Shaw – a father of two children aged six and 10 – lives with his American wife and his in-laws, who were thankfully not at home when their living room ceiling COLLASPED due to a build-up of water. Not only was their part of the mansion ruined but Shaw's prized pool table, which was used in the Mosconi Cup, and professional equipment have all been damaged, too. The Glaswegian, nicknamed Eagle Eye, explained: 'On July 4, there was a mini cyclone. Four trees fell down in my back garden. Knocked down a big gazebo in the garden which we had built for barbecues. 'We got lucky that it never hit the house. Then the next morning I got up, I was outside and my wife said: 'What was that loud bang in the house?' 'When I went into my living room, I found the ceiling was on the floor! I'm guessing with all the trees that had fallen down, on the roof were big pieces of debris. 'That had ripped up like 20 tiles off the roof. So all the water had gone into the attic, went into the insulation in the house and it had soaked in. 'I guess it just sagged down into the ceiling and early in the morning, it finally fell down. There was water dripping everywhere. 'I went downstairs and it was all over my pool table. All over all my cues. Everything was just on the floor. Everything was ruined. 'My mother-in-law and father-in-law had gone away for the weekend. But usually they would have been at home. 'They could have been in the living room at the time because that's where their space is. 'I'm kind of lucky that they weren't there because being in their 70s, who knows what could have happened. Luckily nobody was injured.' Shaw – who plays on Thursday in the Last 64 stage of the US Open – has spent the past six weeks dealing with insurance companies and arranging food and drink orders for the pool bar and restaurant that his family runs. 'A NIGHTMARE SITUATION' Everyone has decamped to a nearby hotel while the house is being fixed and the residual water is 'sucked out' by heavy-duty machines. Shaw added: 'It's a nightmare situation. I've got so much stuff that's completely ruined and we're going to have to completely renovate the full house. 'So, that's why we have to move out for three months. 'I'm kind of mad in a way and then kind of happy, too, that my kids are not injured or anybody is involved. 'But I'm lucky. I got a lot of good friends that have helped and obviously the family are pushing me to go to pool events. 'They are saying, this is a big opportunity and this is what you do for a living. 'So, go and try your hardest and if it doesn't happen then you know you can't really say it's your fault. It's out of your hands. 'So, I'm just playing free and will see what happens. I feel good on the table. 'I've got a lot of stuff on my mind. I'm just going to play my best and try my heart out and hopefully whatever's happened can spur me on to go deep in the tournament.' William Saliba makes new Arsenal demand after title race woe – 'We always miss something'
Arsenal are hoping to end a run of three straight second-place finishes in the Premier League this season after spending £200million on new players in the summer transfer window William Saliba is confident that Arsenal's business in the summer transfer window will make the difference in the Premier League title race. The Gunners have splashed £200million on new players this summer after finishing second for three straight seasons. Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard and Kepa Arrizabalaga have all joined Mikel Arteta 's squad for the 2025/26 campaign, which started with a win. Arsenal edged past Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford and they are hoping to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City for the title once again. Gyokeres is perhaps the most important addition, giving Arsenal the centre-forward many believe they have lacked in recent years. And after finishing 10 points adrift of Liverpool and reaching the Champions League semi-finals, Saliba thinks this could be their year. 'Of course we've finished second for three years in a row, and we know that we always miss something,' the centre-back said. Let's see.' Despite their improvements under Arteta, Arsenal are still chasing a first Premier League title since the famous 2003/04 Invincibles campaign and a first major trophy since the 2020 FA Cup. Saliba was speaking to reporters after being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for the third straight season. The Gunners were represented by the Frenchman, his centre-back partner Gabriel Magalhaes and midfielder Declan Rice. Saliba's partnership with Gabriel has been absolutely vital to their success in the past three seasons and they are ready to prove their class with silverware. 'I'm so happy to play every game with him,' Saliba said. 'He's been injured the last few months, now he's back at his best. He was so good against Manchester again. 'We just miss trophies. We play good, we are good, but we miss trophies, and we have to win trophies with Arsenal to be even better.' Arsenal host newly-promoted Leeds in their second game on Saturday evening before an early test of their title credentials, when they face Liverpool at Anfield on August 31. The Gunners have been handed a difficult start to the campaign, with Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Newcastle to follow after the international break in September.
