Six nabbed for illegal cockfighting in Meradong
BINTANGOR (July 11): Six men were arrested yesterday for allegedly being involved in illegal cockfighting gambling activities in Meradong.
Meradong police chief DSP Tansli Mering said the arrests were made following a raid by a team from the Meradong District Police Headquarters' Criminal Investigation Division.
'During the operation, police raided an open area along Jalan Tanjung Manis/Sibu, which was believed to be used as a venue for cockfighting gambling.
'As a result of the raid, six men were apprehended and several items related to the activity were seized,' he said in a statement today.
Among the seized items were live and dead roosters, a weighing scale, and a whiteboard used to record the cockfighting sessions.
Tansli said the suspects and seized items were taken to the Bintangor Police Station for further action.
The case is being investigated under Section 73(1)(g) of the Public Health (Veterinary) Ordinance 1999, which provides for a fine of up to RM2,000, or imprisonment of up to six months, or both, upon conviction.
'We advise the public to refrain from engaging in any form of gambling and to cooperate with the police by reporting any gambling activities or criminal information in their area, in order to curb illegal activities,' he said. arrest cockfighting gambling Meradong PDRM

'This is someone with 30 years of service ahead. Unfortunately, the lack of a swift mechanism to terminate such officers remains a major challenge,' Shuhaily said. He also noted public misconceptions about disciplinary procedures, with many assuming corrupt officers are simply transferred. Datuk denies cheating in alleged 'Dato' title scam

KOTA KINABALU (July 24): A businessman pleaded not guilty in a Sessions Court here today to three charges of cheating in connection with the acquisition of an honorary 'Dato'' title. Datuk Ling How Ee, 40, entered his plea before judge Jason Juga, who had the charges read to him in Mandarin. Ling is accused of dishonestly inducing a man to transfer RM2,500, RM500, and RM3,000 into his bank account for the purported purchase of gold accessories for ceremonial attire, and to assist in securing a 'Dato'' title from Pahang, despite having no authority to do so. The alleged offences took place at a bank branch here on April 19, April 20 and May 17, 2023. All the charges fall under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of imprisonment between one and ten years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction. The court set September 3 for pre-trial case management. Ling was granted bail of RM10,000 with a RM3,000 deposit and one local surety. Additional conditions imposed included reporting to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) once every two months, surrendering his passport to the court (if any), and refraining from contacting or interfering with prosecution witnesses. He was represented by counsel Ngui Kuang Kee @ George Ngui. Ling was arrested on July 2 after giving a statement at the Sabah MACC Office.

Two more local authority officers remanded over RM200,000 bribery case

KOTA KINABALU (July 24): Two more local authority officers have been remanded by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sabah on suspicion of accepting bribes amounting to RM200,000 in exchange for awarding infrastructure repair work. Magistrate Yong Ching Hong granted a five-day remand order until July 28, following an application made by the MACC at the Sandakan Magistrate's Court today. According to sources, the male and female suspects, aged between 20 and 30, were arrested at the MACC Sandakan Office when they appeared to give their statements between 7pm and 8pm yesterday. 'Initial investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly involved in the corruption scheme from 2022 to 2025. This arrest follows the earlier detention of five individuals linked to the same case,' said a source. The two suspects are believed to have received around RM200,000 through personal bank accounts via money transfers from contractors, in exchange for approving infrastructure projects, including pedestrian walkway repairs, fencing works and mosque reconstruction. Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests when contacted and said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, which relates to accepting bribes in connection with official duties. He added that further arrests may follow as investigations progress. Yesterday, the Sandakan Magistrate's Court also issued a seven-day remand order, until July 23, for five other individuals — including engineers, assistant engineers, and former local authority staff — suspected of accepting similar bribes totalling RM200,000. The five, comprising three men and two women aged between 30 and 50, are believed to have facilitated contractors in securing quotations and tenders for local authority projects between 2022 and 2025.
