Bangladesh national elections: BNP rejects April 2026 poll date; 'people are disappointed'

's announcement of holding national elections next year in April, saying that people are 'disappointed' by the delay.
In a statement issued on Saturday, BNP said 'People's victory was achieved through the immense sacrifices made by students and the masses during the July uprising.'
'But the unwarranted delay in arranging the election has disappointed and angered the people,' Dhaka Tribune quoted the statement.
BNP's national standing committee, led by acting chairman Tarique Rahman, held an emergency virtual meeting in response to Yunus's address.
The committee reiterated its long-standing demand that elections be held no later than December this year, citing upcoming Ramadan, major school examinations, and potential weather disruptions as key considerations.
'The people of this country, deprived of their basic voting rights for almost a decade and a half, have continued their struggle to restore democracy through voting, despite being disappeared, murdered, imprisoned, injured, and tortured,' the party said.

The BNP argued that holding elections during Ramadan in April could create logistical and political complications that might be used as an excuse for further delays. The party also criticised Yunus for failing to clearly explain why December was an unviable option.
Moreover, the statement accused the chief adviser of straying beyond his interim mandate of overseeing justice, reform, and elections. 'The meeting expressed anger at his choice of words in the speech, which crossed the limits of political decorum,' BNP said.
Yunus assumed the role of chief adviser after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government in August 2024. He had vowed to deliver 'a clean, peaceful, festive, and inclusive election,' but his announcement appears to have intensified tensions with the BNP and other opposition forces.
While the BNP, under the leadership of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, has demanded immediate polls, some student and right-wing groups have supported the delay, insisting that elections should follow meaningful reforms and justice processes.

Cops intensify search for Maoists in Odisha forests
1 2 Bhubaneswar: The recent intensified operations against Maoists in Chhattisgarh has reportedly forced them to disperse and seek refuge in adjacent forest areas, police officials said. Acting on intelligence reports, the special operation group (SOG) and district voluntary force (DVF) launched search operations in Charmal forests of Sambalpur district. Intelligence reports suggest that there was suspicious movement of some rebels from Chhattisgarh, who took shelter in these forests, prompting swift action from security forces. "It is an area domination exercise that is being carried out as part of ongoing offensive, search, and combing operations in Maoist-dominated areas in the state. It is not fully confirmed if the rebels dispersed and are trying to shift their bases. Senior BNP leader says elections should be held in December 2025, and not April next year
Dhaka, June 7 (UNI) Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam, reiterating his party's stance on the national polls, said that elections should be held in December 2025, and the proposed April 2026 date is not viable for holding polls. Citing adverse weather, Ramadan, and public examinations as his reasons, the BNP leader said: "The time (April) is not the right time for elections in Bangladesh. There is a risk of extreme heat, storms, and rain. Ramadan… and public examinations will also be taking place. It seems that not much thought has been given to this timeframe." Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus had announced April 2026 as the date for holding the national polls, which the party described as a "disappointing" decision, The Daily Star reported. The party claimed that the 84-year-old CA's decision was aimed at "appeasing a select group of political parties", alluding to the hardline Islamic fundamentalist groups like Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizen Party, who said that no polls can be held until "justice" is not delivered to the "martyrs" of the July Uprising. "BNP has been demanding elections by December, which reflected the peoples' expectations. We believe elections can be held in December, and that would be the most suitable time for the nation," he added. Upon the announcement by CA Yunus, the BNP Standing Committee noted that he did not provide any clear justification as to why holding the election by December would not be feasible, and instead touched upon topics like construction of ports and foreign policy issues – subjects that did not fall under an interim government's ambit. "The BNP has repeatedly said that it wants elections as soon as possible. We had hoped that Dr Muhammad Yunus would announce the election date by December.
