U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on Indian goods, which will take effect from August 7. This move raised major concerns about its potential impact on the Indian economy. However, there's some good news a new report suggests the impact will be minimal. According to a study by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), the tariff is expected to affect India's GDP by only 0.19%, which is almost negligible. Out of India's total exports worth $86.5 billion, only $8.1 billion around 1.87% will be affected by this move. Trump Tariffs: What PHDCCI Study Says? The paper, released by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), also recommends a series of measures to mitigate the impact of US tariffs. 'Our analysis indicates that there will be an estimated impact of only 1.87 per cent on India's total global merchandise exports and a negligible 0.19 per cent on India's GDP as a result of a 25 per cent tariff announced by the US on India,' said Hemant Jain, President, PHDCCI. The study said the total potential export impact is estimated at USD 8.1 billion based on 2024-25 merchandise exports of USD 86.5 billion (1.87 per cent of India's total global export). Which Sectors Will Impact By Trump Tariffs? Among other sectors, the study said the levies would impact engineering goods (USD 1.8 billion), gems and jewellery (USD 932 million), and ready-made garments (USD 500 million). In the wake of the US tariffs, the industry body has recommended several measures, including increasing market penetration, product development and market diversification. It suggested that stakeholders should negotiate bundled-pricing deals (textiles plus accessories) to absorb some tariff cost and maintain shelf-price competitiveness. 'Leverage Indian diaspora networks (trade fairs, cultural events) to boost volume with existing buyers under current product portfolios,' it said. PHDCCI also made a strong case for investments in joint ventures with US firms to produce tariff-sensitive goods on-shore, thereby converting exports into high-value services and intellectual property (IP) licensing. Donald Trump from Samastipur: fake application rejected in Bihar
Donald Trump is a resident of Samastipur district of Bihar, if one were to believe a fake application for a residence certificate. However, alert officials did not fall for it. They cancelled the application and have warned against such fraudulence. The application was submitted online from Mohiuddinnagar block (Patoriya subdivision) of Samastipur district on July 29. The administration cancelled the application on August 4 and registered a first information report at the Samastipur cyber police station on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). 'First of all, the revenue officer of the block showed alertness in this case. After thoroughly investigating the application, recognising the erroneous facts and inconsistent documents in it, immediately informed the concerned senior officials and ensured legal action,' the office of the Samastipur District Magistrate said in a statement. The application was made in the name of 'Donald John Trump'. The father's name was mentioned as 'Frederick Christ Trump'. A photo of the U.S. President and a fake Aadhaar card were also attached to the application. 'The administration took it seriously and immediately registered a case under Sections 318 (4) and 336 (4) (forgery and fraud in documents) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 66 (c) and 66 (d) (electronic identity theft and online fraud) of the Information Technology Act, 2000,' the statement said. The District Magistrate's office warned that 'the use of fake documents in government services is completely unacceptable'. 'The district administration will ensure strict legal action by adopting a 'zero tolerance' policy on such acts. Through this action, the message has also been given that transparency, truth and security are paramount in the digital system of government services,' it said. It further said, 'It has also been clarified that if any act done on social media with the intention of joke or sensation is linked to the government process, then it will be considered a serious crime and the culprit will be punished.' Fake names Recently, applications were received in rural Patna and Nawada in the name of 'dog babu', and 'dogesh babu', respectively. In East Champaran district, an application was received in the name of 'Sonalika tractor', with the photograph of a Bhojpuri actor. The administration has appealed to citizens to use only true and authentic documents for any type of government certificate or service. 'Any kind of deliberate wrong information or fraud can lead to application rejection as well as criminal prosecution. This incident has presented a strong example with the combination of administrative alertness, role of women officers and technical efficiency that the government system is now not only digital, but also vigilant, accountable and legally vigilant,' it said in the press statement.

India slams US 25% tariff as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable"
India on Wednesday termed the US decision to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods 'extremely unfortunate,' 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,' and said it would take all actions necessary to protect its national interests. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the US has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. Referring to its statement on Monday evening, the MEA reiterated that India's imports are based on market factors and aimed at ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people. 'It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,' the MEA said. After days of not responding publicly to threats from US President Donald Trump, the MEA had on Monday described the targeting of India and the European Union (EU) for importing Russian crude as unjustified and unreasonable. 'Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,' it said. The ministry noted that India began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict, adding that at that time, the US actively encouraged such imports to strengthen global energy market stability. Pointing to what it called double standards by the US and EU, the MEA cited EU trade figures, noting that in 2024 the EU's bilateral trade in goods with Russia was €67.5 billion, with trade in services estimated at €17.2 billion in 2023 — significantly higher than India's total trade with Russia in the same period. European imports of LNG from Russia in 2024 reached a record 16.5 million tonnes, surpassing the previous record of 15.21 million tonnes in 2022. It added that Europe's trade with Russia includes not only energy but also fertilisers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel, and machinery and transport equipment. The US, it said, continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its electric vehicle industry, fertilisers, and chemicals. The MEA argued that India's imports are intended to ensure predictable and affordable energy costs for Indian consumers and are a necessity driven by the global market situation. 'However, it is revealing that the very nations criticising India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia. Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,' it said.
