‘We will always live and serve in a way that is worthy of their sacrifice': Peace Officer Memorial Day in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Order arms! The brave men and women in law enforcement gathered at different spots across Kern County for the annual Peace Officer Memorial on Thursday.
Sergeant Eric Celedon with the Bakersfield Police Department said, 'Speaking as an officer who's been on a shift where we lost an officer, Officer Dave Nelson, and knowing other officers who lost their lives in the line of duty it really hits home, and we want the community to know that these are more than officers. They're our brothers, they're our friends…they're our families.'
Bonnie Davis and her service dog, Jordy, stopped by the Kern County Sheriff's Office Headquarters to pay tribute.
Davis said, 'There's nothing neater than a cop. Nothing.'
Davis said she was a volunteer that gave more than 2,400 hours in service to help law enforcement. Now, she's here to honor the fallen.
'When something's happening at your house, the first thing you do is dial 9-1-1, and they show up, no matter what they show up,' said Davis.
Sheriff Donny Youngblood took the podium to speak about the people who gave it all in service, and sacrifice to Kern.
'Not one of the people on this wall knew it was their day,' said Youngblood. 'They didn't get up in the morning knowing it was their day. That's the life that we live. That's the God that we serve who makes that determination not us. We don't go to work, and nor do they, in fear. They go as heroes.'

Deputy Dustin Contreras said, 'It's not just you know, when you can die in the line of duty. It's the total impact of this job which takes a toll on everyone's family.'
The memorial ends at the Kern Superior Court building honoring law enforcement county wide. Bakersfield Police Chief, Greg Terry, said, 'You being here is inspiring to us to keep going, and to carry on because we know that the loss you feel is so deep, and we pledge to you that we will never forget these names, and we pray we will always live and serve in a way that is worthy of their sacrifice.'
Peace Officer Memorial week will be observed the week of May 11-17, 2025. During this period of observance, deputies will be wearing black mourning bands over their badges, and flags at the sheriff's office facilities will be flown at half-staff.

Machete-wielding man attacks security guard at Frisco mosque, police say
A security guard was attacked by a man with a machete at a Frisco mosque during prayer on Sunday, June 8, police said. Officers responded at 11 a.m. to the Islamic Center of Frisco at 11137 Frisco St., after reports of a person being stabbed at the location, Frisco police said in a news release. Police said a 911 caller provided a description of the suspect, who was still at- large. Based on that description, the suspect, 26-year-old Malik Davis was taken into custody, police said. The initial investigation by officers found that the victim, who is a uniformed security guard at the mosque, was praying inside when Davis approached him from behind and assaulted the security guard multiple times with a machete, police said. The victim suffered injuries to his head and one of his hands, police said. Police said Davis took possession of the victim's gun but later ditched it before being confronted by officers. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and subsequently released, police said. Davis was transported to the Collin County Jail and faces charges of aggravated assault against a security officer and theft of a firearm with a bond set at $60,000. SKIM Act would tap in federal law enforcement to handle EBT thefts
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Kern County has been plagued with EBT theft for years. A months-long investigation by 17 News uncovered a Romanian Crime Ring behind the card skimming, but the problem went beyond county lines. '$100,00 dollars a month that were stolen before, prior to 2021,' said Congressman Vince Fong, representing California's 20th District. 'Now we're looking at $10 million being stolen a month.' It seems the state ignored this issue for far too long. 'I have my criticism of the state government,' said Fong. Coroner ID's man shot, killed in south Bakersfield in January Fong said it's time the federal government steps in. Officials presented the 'Stopping Klepto-card and Information Misuse Act'; SKIM Act for its initials on Monday. Tapping in the general attorney and homeland security to fight against welfare fraud. 'We need to tie all the dots together, especially when we have international crime rings that are participating not only within California, or within Kern County, but across state lines,' said Congressman Fong. 'So we have to have the ability for the federal law enforcement agency to coordinate and cooperate with state and local entities. Absolutely not, for the amount that's being stolen, there has to be real teeth to those penalties. We're going to work with the attorney general to raise it to as high as we can…we need it to the point where we can deter this criminal behavior.' Congressman Fong said he hopes bringing national attention to this issue will lead to improving security measures in welfare programs nationwide. Coroner ID's man shot, killed in south Bakersfield in January
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Coroner's Office identified a man who was shot and killed in south Bakersfield on New Year's Day. Jatinder Singh, 39, was shot in the 2100 block of East Casa Loma Drive Jan. 1 at around 5:17 p.m., according to officials. Singh was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of his death was multiple gunshot wounds. Police identified the suspect in the shooting as Gurinder Singh. In January, police said Gurinder Singh was wanted on suspicion of murder and is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on Singh's whereabouts is asked to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 661-327-7111. Anyone who sees him should not approach him, police said, but instead call 911.
