KUALA LUMPUR - The government has no plans to re-host the Formula 1 (F1) championship due to the rising costs of hosting fees and facility provisions, as well as the increasingly packed international racing calendar.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said that hosting the prestigious race requires an investment of approximately RM300 million annually to pay the hosting fees to F1's commercial rights holder, Liberty Media.
"Generally, Malaysia would need to sign a hosting contract for three to five years with Liberty Media, which would involve a commitment of around RM1.5 billion in hosting fees over that period.
"The costs for preparing the circuit and hosting the event also need to be taken into account, with the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) maintaining its Grade 1 homologation rating from the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), which requires RM10 million annually to ensure the safety of the circuit and that the supporting facilities meet these standards," she said when answering a question during the Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday.
She added that the significant budget allocated for hosting F1 could be better used to fund various sports development programmes under the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS).
For example, she said, the ministry could implement sports development programs for 20 sports, involving 363 podium athletes and 9,834 talent development athletes, at a total cost of RM124.1 million per year.
The RM10 million per year required for circuit maintenance could also be used to fund the "Road to Gold" (RTG) program for one year.
"With the same amount, the government allocates RM30 million per year for the Sports Matching Grant (GPS) over a period of 10 years.
"This initiative is important as it stimulates the growth of the sports economy through private sector involvement in organising national and international sporting events," she said.
In response to a supplementary question from Oscar Ling Chai Yew (PH-Sibu) regarding the use of the SIC circuit, Hannah clarified that the circuit is open to the public through the SIC Time Out programme, which includes various free community activities such as cycling, skateboarding and more.
The annual MotoGP event held last year successfully attracted nearly 185,000 spectators, generating an economic impact of RM329 million and creating 4,463 job opportunities for the people.

Datuks, doctors among owners of RM10mil luxury cars seized over unpaid road tax

SEBERANG JAYA: The Penang Road Transport Department (RTD) has seized 38 luxury vehicles worth more than RM10 million in "Op Luxury" for offences involving expired road tax and insurance. State RTD director Zulkifli Ismail said the operation, conducted from June until yesterday, targeted luxury cars being driven without valid documentation. "The seized vehicles included Rolls Royce, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Ferrari models, all without valid road tax or insurance ranging from six months to more than two years. "Yet, they were still being used on the road. "This is not only a loss to government revenue but also endangers other road users if an accident occurs. "For example, the Rolls Royce, valued at over RM3 million, carried a road tax of RM54,000 per year, which had not been paid for the past year. "In total, the seized cars owed RM77,400 in unpaid road tax," he told reporters today. Zulkifli said the owners included companies and individuals such as businessmen with the title 'Datuk' and doctors. At the time of the seizures, some vehicles were driven by family members or company employees. "The most common excuse given was forgetting to renew the road tax, but there were also cases where owners deliberately avoided payment despite being able to afford it. "All the seized cars will remain at the state RTD office until the owners settle their summonses and renew both road tax and insurance," he said. He said while ownership documents for the vehicles were complete and valid, the lack of road tax and insurance required them to be seized and investigated under Sections 23 and 90 of the Road Transport Act 1987. "This operation will continue to ensure all vehicles comply with the regulations. "We are not against luxury vehicles, but enforcement is crucial for road safety. "If an accident involves an uninsured vehicle, it creates problems not only for the owner but also for third parties," he said. Recently, it was reported that RTD had seized 270 luxury vehicles nationwide for the same offences under Op Luxury, which has been ongoing since July 1. RTD director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the operation was being carried out continuously across all states to take firm action against luxury vehicles being driven without valid licences or insurance.

Dewan Rakyat passes 13MP by majority voice vote

The 13MP motion was debated over eight days beginning Aug 4, with participation from 161 Members of Parliament, followed by a four-day ministerial winding-up session that concluded today. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 21): The Dewan Rakyat today passed the motion on the 13th Malaysia Plan, the country's strategic five-year development blueprint for the 2026 – 2030 period, through a majority voice vote. The 13MP motion was debated over eight days beginning Aug 4, with participation from 161 Members of Parliament, followed by a four-day ministerial winding-up session that concluded today. Today's session saw six ministries delivering their winding-up speeches, including the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Digital, and the Ministry of Economy. Among key issues raised during the debate were calls for a flexible and optional pension withdrawal model, which allows retirees to receive monthly payments via their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings; the formulation of new policies to enhance the education structure and strengthening Malaysia's creative economy, also known as the orange economy. On July 31, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim tabled the 13MP motion themed Melakar Semula Pembangunan (Redesigning Development), aimed at redesigning the nation's trajectory through technological leadership, inclusive growth, and public sector reform. The plan details Malaysia's five-year plan through a development approach based on three fundamental pillars, namely raising the ceiling (economic growth), raising the floor (people's lives) and strengthening governance (effective administration). Through four core thrusts with 27 priorities and supported by more than 100 implementation strategies, the 13MP features various cross-sector reforms and plans to accelerate the transition to an economy based on digital and advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), while ensuring that the benefits of development are distributed fairly across regions, social classes and generations. The Dewan Rakyat sitting continues on Monday. – Bernama 13MP motion debated Dewan Rakyat lead majority voice vote passed winding-up

Maxis Posts Higher Net Profit Of RM398 Mln In 2Q 2025

REGION - CENTRAL > NEWS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Maxis Bhd posted a higher net profit of RM398 million for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q 2025), up 11.8 per cent from RM356 million in the same quarter last year. However, Malaysia's leading integrated telco said its revenue edged down 0.9 per cent to RM2.56 billion in the quarter under review from RM2.58 billion previously. Its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) remained healthy, rising 4.6 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM1.09 billion, supported by effective cost management. bootstrap slideshow Maxis said underlying service revenue remained stable, with growth in the consumer postpaid, home and enterprise segments. The company registered service revenue of RM2.20 billion, flat y-o-y due to the ongoing impact of changes in commercial arrangements for its device protection programme, first announced in 1Q 2025. In consumer mobile, service revenue fell 1.3 per cent y-o-y, affected by the commercial arrangements and lower interconnect rates. Nevertheless, mobile subscriptions rose 2.8 per cent y-o-y, led by strong postpaid growth from enhanced data plans offering greater value. Meanwhile, it said the prepaid segment remains focused on targeted offerings, most recently for travellers and cost-conscious consumers. "The consumer home segment, which includes fibre broadband and home solar solutions, maintained steady momentum with service revenue up 1.2 per cent y-o-y, in tandem with a 1.4 per cent increase in total home connections.
