The Indo Daily: Secret messages, codewords and a phone smashed with an axe – The Irishman caught in 'biggest corporate espionage case of the century'

Earlier this year a spy trail of secret messages, codewords and a phone smashed with an axe unfolded in front of the High Court in an extraordinary tale of alleged corporate espionage.
The story of Dublin man Keith O'Brien made international headlines when his employer, a major US HR services firm, set a 'trap' to identify how confidential information was being leaked – and the saga is not over yet. His 13-page confession was read to the High Court, where he told how he spied on his multinational employer for a rival for a fee of over €5,000 a month. That is, until he was caught.
In an affidavit filed with the High Court, Keith O'Brien, who was global payroll compliance manager of Rippling, said he was induced into spying and passing sensitive company information to the CEO of rival US firm Deel Inc.
The admission was disclosed during an application to join Deel, its French chief executive Alex Bouaziz and two solicitors working for Deel – Italian national Andrea David Mieli and UK-based Asif Malik – as co-defendants in corporate espionage proceedings taken by Rippling against Mr O'Brien last month.
The Commercial Court heard Mr O'Brien passed on screenshots from Rippling's Slack messaging system to Mr Bouaziz, who was described as a billionaire, over the course of several months and was paid for this via Revolut and in cryptocurrency.
Today, on the Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Irish Independent legal affairs editor Shane Phelan and Sunday Independent senior correspondent Maeve Sheehan, to discuss how a payroll compliance manager was allegedly recruited as a corporate spy – and where the intrigue will go next.

Flames can be seen engulfing the check-in area while black smoke billows into the air. The terrifying ordeal saw bystanders flee in confusion as the incident unfolded. It started at around 10.30am today in the departure area of Terminal 1. The man went on a rampage in the check-in area, first attempting to set fire to a bin, according to Italian media. Armed with a hammer, he then damaged check-in desks and information screens. The passenger then tried to hit multiple SEA security personnel before he was finally restrained by officers. He has since been arrested, according to reports. Crowds of terrified passengers were seen fleeing the terminal while the bizarre rampage was underway. Part of the airport was closed as firefighters dashed in to extinguish the blaze. A SEA employee who intervened to stop him reportedly suffered some injuries and was treated by medical services, Varese News has reported. Pictures of the aftermath show the terminal consumed with heavy smoke as first responders continue to clear up the scene. A spokesperson for the Lombardy Airport Association said the situation was "quickly brought under control" following the man's arrest. They added: "Due to the closure of some areas and evacuation of premises, possible delays and cancellations for departures from the airport." More to follow... According to selling agent Tom Dillon of Listowel-based Dillon Prendiville Auctioneers, the farm is in an idyllic location, boasting picturesque views of the River Feale, Listowel and its famous racecourse. This farm is a probate sale of the estate of the late Eamon Foran, a well-known racing enthusiast who bred and trained horses and who served as director of Listowel Race Company for 45 years, being twice elected chairman. 'There were always horses on the land,' said Mr Dillon. An aerial view of the 88-acre farm at Ballygrennan, Listowel, Co Kerry. ‘Supersonic' lift for Dublin economy as Oasis gigs fuel weekend spending surge

DUBLIN CITY SAW a welcome boost to its economy last weekend, as Oasis fans spent big as they poured into the capital for two sold-out Croke Park concerts. Revolut reported that consumer spending in the city jumped by more than nine per cent compared with the previous weekend, while the volume of card transactions rose by over eight per cent. It was the first time in 16 years that the Gallagher brothers had played in Ireland, and the city made the most of the occasion. Spending in Dublin's bars, cafés, restaurants and nightclubs climbed by 16 per cent, while a pop-up Oasis store in St Stephen's Green shopping centre drew long queues of fans looking for merchandise. The store recorded hundreds of thousands of euros in sales and has now extended its run owing to demand. Fans pictured outside the Oasis Live '25 pop up shop at Stephens Green. Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo Transport operators were also big winners. While public transport spending fell by nine per cent in the rest of the country, it soared by more than 120 per cent in Dublin as fans made their way to and from the concerts. Advertisement Taxi drivers also enjoyed a 15 per cent rise in takings across the weekend. For those who missed out on tickets, there was still a strong party atmosphere. Shop-bought beer, wine and spirits sales in Dublin jumped by more than a third compared with the previous weekend. Revolut data showed that fans aged 25-34 were the biggest spenders, outpacing those now in their 40s and 50s who would have first discovered the band during their heyday in the 1990s. Businesses in the food, drink and tobacco sectors also enjoyed a lift, with Revolut Business customers recording a two per cent increase in revenues. Malcolm Craig, general manager at Revolut Bank UAB Ireland Branch said that Oasis ''Definitely Maybe' gave the Dublin economy a boost last weekend.' 'Consumer spending of this level in just one weekend sends a very strong signal about the confidence of our more than 3 million customers in Ireland,' Craig said. 'Last weekend highlights the value of attracting genuine A-listers to Ireland.' Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone...
